I myself don’t make art, I wish I was artistic, but I’m quite entertaining otherwise? I think? Anyways, enjoy
Every time I see someone who reads lots of fic on AO3 but doesn’t have an account, I have to wonder if they realize how many features AO3 has just for readers. This is not an exhaustive list, but here are a few (and I’ve saved the best for last!):
Bookmarks - You probably know these exist because you’ve seen them on fic you read. But did you know that you can:
Make private bookmarks that only you can see - they don’t show up when someone clicks that “bookmarks” link. Not even the author can see them.
Organize your bookmarks with tags.
Filter them like you would a search.
Add your own comments/descriptions, either for your own benefit or the benefit of people looking for something to read. (Just remember that unless your bookmark is private everyone including the author can see tags & comments.)
History - AO3 can track every fic you’ve ever viewed. My history is 373 pages long. However, you can delete any fic from your history with the click of a button, clear your entire history at once, or turn this off.
“Marked for Later” - Some people use bookmarks to save fics they haven’t read yet, but there’s also a separate system for that. When you’re logged in there’s a “Mark for Later” button on each fic. Then you can filter your History down to just those Marked for Later. Once you’ve read a marked fic you can then hit the “Mark as Read” button and it will drop off this
The downside to both the History and Marked for Later is that this system currently can’t be sorted or filtered beyond that, but it can be useful nonetheless if you want to save your Bookmarks for rereading your faves.
Locked fics - Some people lock their fics to registered users for many reasons. They don’t want their fics showing up in search engines, they don’t want bots stealing them, they’re having a troll problem, etc. Without an AO3 account you won’t even see that these exist.
Comment notifications - You have an inbox on AO3, and anytime anyone replies to one of your comments you will get a notification. No more having to go back and check fics to see if authors replied to you! You can also opt to get an email every time.
Customize how you see the site - You can use site skins, hide tags or warnings on fics, skip the extra step to view adult content (if you’re 18+), even customize how your browser titles the window.
Last but very much not least:
Subscribe to fics, series, or authors - I honestly don’t understand how anyone keeps up with WIPs without this.
Get an email every time a new chapter is posted, or every time one of your favorite writers posts a new fic or chapter!
Don’t want to read a WIP as it’s being posted? Subscribe and know as soon as the last chapter goes up.
Worth getting an account just for this alone tbh.

(Hitting subscribe is also one more way to show an author you care, although authors can’t see subscriber #s on series.)
There are probably more, but those are the main ones. Yes, you have to wait a few days to get an account, but it’s worth it. If you’re worried because you don’t want people seeing you kudos certain fics (that one tentacle fic you’ll never admit to having read?) - the way login is setup it’s actually super easy to log out, leave anonymous kudos, and log back in without leaving the fic. AO3 is designed by users; they’ve got your back.

Aftermoving our little collection of servers to their own rack close to six years ago, and then expanding to a second rack in August 2018, your donations have now paid for three racks total! (The pictures were taken in December, while work on the third rack was happening, which explains the extra cables and things.) MMATB?byfitzgarbage – “marry me at taco bell?” basically taekook fake engagement so they can get married at taco bell and you can guess what happens next. it’s so good and so funny it makes me smile a lot
So, there is a postcirculating and harping on the don’t donate to Ao3 again. I thought about replying to it directly, but I really didn’t want to give it more attention. While they have done some research into past 990 forms, they are being very irate about a figure of about 13,000 for Management & Administrative because the Non-Profit staff doesn’t get paid and fear-mongering that the higher ups are embezzling the money instead of putting it to good use.
Now, I cannot speak to server costs and the massive scalability increase needed for the newer requirements especially in these Covid-era years. Although, I know as a writer and reader on Ao3 myself, I know that Ao3 has made lots of improvements since this time.
However, the linked post OP seems to fundamentally miss something very important, something which I assume most people in the general public do not even need to know exists. That 13,000 cost and category looks like it could absolutely be a Non-Profit accountant, which is a very specialized niche of accountant who knows the tax code relevant to Non-Profits and who make sure all of the accounts meet the legal requirements and the organization wouldn’t lose that hard won Non-Profit status.
Now, I myself would be very in the dark were it not for the fact that I personally was a treasurer for a much smaller non-profit for about 3-4 years nearly a decade ago. That means I didn’t get paid for the hundreds of hours of my timing tracking all of the financials for my group. However, you better believe even a small organization like ours shelled out about $7,000 (during my tenure) to have that accountant with the right expertise vet all my work and handle all coordination between the federal and state tax authorities, even though we were also a group that never broke past about $200,000 revenue/income mark at the time. (My memory on what the exact thresholds were or are now is fuzzy at best.) Since Ao3 is seeing numbers in the millions, that larger dollar figure raised explicitly requires more time (and cost) intensive level of scrutiny by the accountant to ensure auditing compliance of all records submitted to the tax authorities.
The one complaint review cited on Guidestar (of a past BoD member in 2014) talks about the functional sunshine requirements and visibility. This likely expense 100% speaks to make sure they are doing everything right and above board.
Now, obviously I cannot confirm that Ao3 doesn’t have some tax accountant volunteer who is out there somewhere doing this work pro-bono (as nearly all the all-volunteer staff clearly does.) However, it is just one very expensive line item that comes to mind off hand that most people are not aware is not just required, but is essential to ensuring the organization continues to serve its users as intended.
The 990 form will never be that detailed, as they are intended to provide a big picture view to the public (and the authorities, of course). However, that detail is there behind the scenes and is going to be vetted in incredible depth to ensure the organization is properly serving the public.
Genrefers to fic that is not focused on romance. If your fic is not a romance fic, please give it this tag.
Otherrefers to fic that isfocused on romance, but is not specifically male/female, male/male, or female/female (like an OT3 (ship involving 3 people), a ship involving characters that are not male or female, etc). IT IS NOT FOR PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS. IT IS FOR ROMANTIC ONES. please for the love of all that is holy do not tag your family-relationship-centered fics as “other” you are going to give people a HEART ATTACK.
“Character/Character” is for romantic pairs. “Character & Character” is for platonic relationships like friendship, family, etc. Please do not tag family-centered or adult-and-minor-centered platonic character relationships as character/character for the love of all that is holy
TheErating is for smut and literally nothing else (unless you have other unusual reasons to rate it E–I’ve seen people apply it to non-smut fics as a deterrent to keep minors away from it, but keep in mind it’ll make it so people who are trying to avoid smut will not find your fic). Your fic that has a lot of graphic violence but no sexual content does not need an E rating.
TheMrating is for fics that would basically be rated R if they were movies, and may contain graphic violence, some sexual content, and generally more serious subject matter than you would typically show a teenager. However, if your fic is almost entirely smut, please just give it an E rating.
Also,when you post a fic, you WILL want to give it a rating, or else AO3 will assume you’re probably posting smut and will warn everybody who clicks on your fic that it may contain adult content. If you don’t want that on your fic that contains no adult content at all, please just give it the proper rating instead of not rating it at all.

“Creator Chose Not to Archive Warnings” means that at least one or more of the archive warnings (that is, “Major Character Death,” “Graphic Depictions of Violence,” “Rape/Non-Con,” or “Underage”) DOES apply to your story, and you’re choosing not to say which one it is. If you select this option, AO3 will put a warning on the fic that potential readers have to click through.
“No Archive Warnings Apply” means that none of the aforementioned archive warnings apply to your fic.
THESE ARE NOT THE SAME THING. IF YOUR FIC DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING MAJOR THAT NEEDS TO BE WARNED FOR, PLEASE SELECT “NO ARCHIVE WARNINGS APPLY.”
Also, for the love of everything on earth, please stop marking your fics as complete when they are not? The chapter function of an incomplete fic should look like this:
number/?ORnumber/higher number
If you mark it as (for example) 4/4, you’re telling readers that the COMPLETE story has FOUR chapters and ALL FOUR have been posted, meaning once you read all four you will have reached the end point of the fic. It’s unfair to readers when an incomplete fic is marked this way.
The misuse of “creator chose not to use archive warnings” is VERY common!! Please read this and label your Fic appropriately so it can reach its audience ❤️

A fell asleep on public transport. B is sitting right next to them, and as they see the next stop coming up, they wake A up to ask if it’s their stop. (bonus points if Bcaught glimpses of them while they slept, adoring how peaceful they looked!)
A lost something in public and is freaking out. that is, until Bfound whatAwas looking for, and asks if it’s theirs.
it’s raining/snowing and BnoticedAis without proper clothing/equipment, like an umbrella or a jacket. so what does B do? they ask if A wants their only jacket/asks A if they want to share an umbrella.
AandB get paired up for a boring project, but together they make it fun!
the classic “the parents dragged AandB to a boring party and they become friends.”
B gets something tasty looking from a restaurant/cafe/etc. and, despite A being shy or nervous, they ask what it is.
A wants the last of something (ex. a donut or bag) but they and B grab it simultaneously. now they stare at each other for a little too long before B frantically says, “you can have it!” and then they go back and forth insisting the other can have it. (bonus points if their hands touch!)
AandB are sitting next to each other on a long flight. despite them going to the same place, it’s for completely different reasons. A is going for a funeral, and B is going for a friend’s wedding. out of nowhere, A starts crying, and though it’s hardly audible, B notices and starts comforting Aimmediately.by the end of the flight, they both have each other’s numbers!
no one said these had to be realistic, right? perfect. A is out in public and sees a familiar figure. the thing is, A is mistaking B, a stranger A has never saw until now, for their best friend. A quickens their walking to catch up with their “best friend.” when they eventually do, they scare them from the back, but when B turns around, A’s smile falls. AexpectsB to get reasonably upset, but instead, B laughs. a strong friendship (maybe even a romantic relationship?) ensues.
again, might be unrealistic yet adorable! A finds a cat/dog on the street, but they don’t have a collar, so A starts treating them as their own. that is until B starts knocking on people’s doors, describing the pet and asking if anyone has seen them. when B gets to A’sdoor,A immediately knows they have that exact pet. depending on who you portray A to be, they may consider lying and saying they don’t have it, but in the end, they end up giving the pet back. the pet, however, is very attached to A, and tries to stay. B notices this and tells A that they can keep the pet, just as long as they stay in contact so B can visit it whenever! a strong relationship between AandB ensues :)
