NEW MAP: Europe 1812: Battle of Berezina (26 November 1812) https://buff.ly/3xEUvdU Suffering from the winter, exhausted supply lines, and repeated Russian attacks, the French retreat from Moscow soon degenerated into a disaster. In late November Napoleon narrowly managed to escape across the Berezina, evading a last Russian attempt to destroy his army but losing half his remaining troops. The emperor then raced back to Paris to raise new recruits while the remnants of his Grande Armée—some 10,000 of the over 400,000 who had marched on Moscow just months before—crossed out of Russia. #1810s #1812 #19thcentury #atlas #bonaparte #europe #europeanhistory #france #frenchhistory #frenchempire #frenchrevolution #historic #historisch #historyclass #historyfacts #historymaker #historymatters #historyteacher #janeausten #mapmaking #maps #militaryhistory #napoleon #napoleoni #napoleonic #napoleonicwars #november #november26 #russianempire #newmap (at Borisov, Belarus)

NEW MAP: Europe 311: Collapse of the Tetrarchy (10 June 311) https://buff.ly/3xslYiL In early May 311 Galerius died and was succeeded as senior Augustus by Maximinus Daza. Although Constantine and Licinius would pay lip service to this decision until late 312, Maximinus had little authority over the two Augusti and did not appoint a new tetrarch. #4thcentury #lateromanempire #ancientrome #byzantium #constantine #carta #cartografia #constantinei #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #historia #historian #historias #historical #historylesson #historymatters #historyteacher #map #maps #roman #romanafrica #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #tetrarchy #worldhistory #newmap (at Sirmium Palatium Imperiale)

NEW MAP: Europe 308: Council of Carnuntum (11 November 308) https://buff.ly/3BADGE0 Maximian and Maxentius soon had a falling out and in April 308 Maximian took refuge with Constantine, encouraging Domitius Alexander in Africa to also break with Maxentius. That year Diocletian came out of retirement and, at Carnuntum in November, met with Galerius and Maximian in an attempt to restore stability to the empire. They agreed to appoint Licinius as a new Augustus, to confirm Constantine and Maximinus Daza as Caesars, and for Maximian to step down. For a moment an unprecedented eight emperors ruled the Roman world, but even after Diocletian and Maximian returned to retirement, a still daunting six remained. #4thcentury #ancientrome #arthistory #constantinethegreat #constantinei #diocletian #galerius #cartografia #cartography #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #historicalplace #history #historydegree #historylover #historymatters #historynerd #maps #roman #romanafrica #romancivilwar #tetrarchy #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #teachinghistory #welovemaps #westernromanempire #newmap (at Carnuntum)

NEW MAP: Europe 1813: Battle of Vitoria (21 June 1813) https://buff.ly/3xgRVei Napoleon’s need to defend against the Sixth Coalition in Germany forced him to pull troops from Spain. In May 1813 Wellington launched a renewed offensive from Portugal, threatening French supply lines to the peninsula by marching on the mountain passes of the western Pyrenees. The French tried to stop him at Vitoria, but were roundly defeated, prompting King Joseph Bonaparte to flee to France. #vitoria #1813 #19thcentury #dukeofwellington #austrianempire #carta #cartography #europe #europeanhistory #frenchempire #frenchhistory #historicalatlas #histories #history #historylesson #historylover #historymatters #historyteacher #june #peninsularwar #maps #napoleon #napoleonicwars #prussia #russianempire #spanishhistory #britishmilitary #worldatlas #worldhistory #newmap (at Vitoria-Gasteiz, Pais Vasco, Spain)

North America 160 years ago today: Attack on Fort Sumter (12 April 1861) https://buff.ly/2P4fceF Despite the Confederacy’s declaration of independence, the United States Army still garrisoned a number of forts in the south. The most vulnerable was Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina, which desperately needed to be resupplied. However when newly elected US President Lincoln ordered the navy to ship in supplies, the Confederate government considered it an act of war and attacked the fort from land. The American Civil War had begun. #1861 #19thcentury #americancivilwar #americanhistory #april #april12 #confederacy #fortsumter #historicalmaps #histories #historyfacts #historygram #historymajor #historymatters #historyschool #mapping #maps #northamerica #southcarolina #militaryhistory #ushistory #uscivilwar #confederatestates #victorian #victorianera #abrahamlincoln #worldatlas #todayinhistory #historytoday #thisdayinhistory (at Fort Sumter Tours)

However there was some hope for the Chinese - in April their troops managed their first major victory, defeating the Japanese at Tai'erzhuang and temporarily preventing the connection of the two Japanese armies. #1930s #1938 #20thcentury #april #april7 #asiapacific #atlas #axisallies #cartografia #chinesecivilwar #chiangkaishek #chinesehistory #nazigermany #historyclass #historygeek #historymajor #historymaker #historymatters #historymuseum #empireofjapan #japanesehistory #mapa #maps #sinojapanesewar #japaneseempire #ww2 #wwii #todayinhistory #historytoday #thisdayinhistory (at Taierzhuang Battle Memorial Hall)

NEW MAP: Europe 273: Revolt of Firmus (July 273) https://buff.ly/3ete3vW No sooner had Aurelian crossed into Europe after his defeat of Zenobia, than Palmyra rebelled again. Racing back east, the emperor sacked the city in retribution, only to face a pro-Palmyrene uprising in Egypt. This too Aurelian crushed, although in the fighting the Brucheion quarter of Alexandria, which housed the famous Great Library, was almost entirely destroyed. #thirdcentury #ancientrome #romanegypt #ancientegypt #aurelian #cartography #dacia #europe #europeanhistory #historia #historian #historic #historylesson #historylover #historymaker #historymatters #spqr #classicalera #map #mapping #maps #alexandria #palmyra #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #romansyria #greatlibrary #newmap (at Alexandria, Egypt)
