alfred-borden:

Silence is what sets this film out from others and its particularly so with someone who is deaf. While we always had a deaf character in the script, it was who John really pushed for them to hire Millicent. She came to set and taught everyone sign language. It was really amazing and brought an extra depth to the film.

It’s not often that a horror movie manages to snag the top spot at the box office, and even rarer that it should reclaim first place in its third weekend, after having dropped down to number two. But that’s exactly what John Krasinki’s new film A Quiet Place pulled off, to the tune of a 50 million dollar opening, and over 200 million worldwide. What’s more remarkable, though, is that such a mainstream movie would commit so steadfastly to its premise — where any sound made can attract the attention of deadly monsters — and silently render almost every word of dialogue in American Sign Language (ASL). And as a result, actress Millicent Simmonds explains, the film winds up being especially significant for the deaf community.

Simmonds, who is deaf herself, actually spent time on set helping the other actors learn ASL, which generally goes underrepresented in mainstream cinema. And the importance of casting a deaf actor and using genuine sign language is something she’s been quick to underscore. “I think it’s important in the deaf community to advocate for and be a representative for this story,” she says, “a story that might inspire directors and other screenwriters to include more deaf talent and be more creative in the way you use deaf talent.” “What I hope is that I can show [my community] you can do anything,“ she goes on to explain, “not only become an actor, but a writer, a teacher, a pilot, anything you want to do is possible.”

And for those who’ve now seen the film, there’s yet another linguisticky easter egg to be found, around which the whole final act of the movie turns. So if you don’t want to be spoiled, be sure to stop reading right now, because principle plot points abound below the fold! ^_^

A cool discussion of A Quiet Place from our staff writer Stephan! There’s some good explanation under the fold, too, but it is spoiler-y. Still, I learned a bunch!

Back to the Beginning

The Desert Rose, at a crossroads in her life, returns to the Sagolii Desert to think.

Mismatched orbs of cerulean and violet gaze out across the dunes in quiet contemplation, the sun high in the sky.

She allows the burning rays of the star beat down on her, finding the heat comforting. She has a tour coming up and must decide on a set list and venues, but can’t seem to get the Highlander out of her head. His rugged good looks, the smell of his skin, the warmth of his embrace, and those eyes. Gods, those eyes.

Hours pass and the sun begins to set over Thanalan. A decision. The last time she came to this decision, she had essentially been left at the altar, but Fae’s never been one to give up. There were a few difficult conversations to get through, but she felt he was worth it. A hand touched the muscles of her stomach, eyes cast low on the horizon. She was as barren as the desert in which she sat, and that had been known to drive away men in the past.

She hoped this time he would stay.

((IC post of contemplation! Screenshots by me.))

An intensely suspenseful piece of very original work… Brilliant filmmaking.

The final day of CincemaCon could have easily been called Tom Cruise day as Paramount showcase two of his films, amid their wares.

Paramount’s president, former actor turned producer (his shingle Tollin-Robbins produced a number of WB/CW shows) Brian Robbins touted films :

-BABYLON by Damien Chazzelle (WHIPLASH, LALA LAND). Starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, it’s background is Hollywood’s transition from silent films to talkies. Pitt wil be playing John Gilbert and Robbie Clara Bow. It also stars Katherine Waterston, Max MInghella, Eric Roberts, Lukas Haas and Samara Weaving

Someone get Emma Mackey and Jamie Pressley on the phone.

-As part of their sizzle reel a title card was flashed for A QUIET PLACE spinoff named A QUIET PLACE : DAY ONE. There is still set to be a standard third film A QUIET PLACE - PART III for 2025.

-Trailer for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7, which

which reveals that it is named MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING PART ONE, scheduled for a July 24, 2023 release.

Which is insane as they are currently filming MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8 so I take it to mean MI7 is actually split into two parts and the 8th - and likely final- film is its own film. Or maybe they have just not formally announced that MI8 is no more and the currently filming one is, indeed, MI: DEAD RECKONING PART TWO. In any case the currently shooting one is slated for a June 28, 2024 release.

In any case: TBT the tremendous women of Mission Impossible (not counting the women who didn’t stick around like Maggie Q and Paula Patton).

The event closed out with the attendees seeing TOP GUN: MAVERICK in its entirety.

Delayed from a 2020 release and a whopping 36 years after the first film, Tom Cruise returns to the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who returns to train newbies (which includes Miles Teller and Glen Powell-

(in the tradition of Cruise gifting his costars, unlike Dakota Fanning who still receives shoes for her birthday from him, and others who get an annual Christmas cake, Powell was gifted flight training so he could get a pilot license).

By all accounts the movie by the attendees and some have even took time to say how great Lady Gaga’s song for the film is. Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” and Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” are big shoes to fill, Stephanie. Let’s see if her track stands the test of the time.

-Lionsgate closes out the event

A Quiet Place: Part II‘s new official release date is September 4, 2020!

Unpopular opinion

A Quiet Place was only okay, definitely not something I’d watch again

A Quiet Place p2

…was amazing! Saw it tonight. Better than the first one imo although I missed John Krasinski in it lol, but he did make appearance at the start in a flashback, and after all he did write and direct! Brilliant the entire casts acting was *chefs kiss* and the plot *slight spoiler* with the guy and the daughter in the movie was sweet, badass and low-key gave me the last of us vibes in a way but not completely ya know? Anyway 10/10 I actually hope they make a third… not usually one to hope for more but I really enjoyed the premise of this one and finding out more about these creatures aswell..I wish Emily Blunt had more to do in this movie although she was absolutely incredible and badass in her parts! Her kids in the movie were also so great and courageous, it was heartwarming and badass, I keep saying that but it’s true lol | ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
