Today we are preparing for the Sacred Jurema Ceremony. We are being led by a Shaman from the local KAriri Xocó people. He is a gentle yet strong spirited man. He is from one of the local indigenous tribes that joined our African Ancestors who escaped slavery from the Portuguese. Together they formed Ouilombo’s or Maroon Communities like the ones found in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean. In the US, those resistance communities are called the Gullah People.

We are all grateful to be here to share this Sacred Medicine in togetherness ✊☀️☀️

The Jurema is a sacred evergreen whose bark and roots are used to create a psychoactive decoction called Vinho da Jurema (Jurema Wine); traditionally used similarly to the more internationally famous ayahuasca. There are two subspecies: Black Jurema (Mimosa hostilis) and White Jurema (Mimosa verucosa).

Shamanic and magical healing are at the root of the spiritual tradition called Jurema, now centered in north-eastern Brazil, near Recife. Jurema is based on indigenous Braziliantraditions, specifically those of the Tupi Indians but is a syncretic tradition also incorporating African and European influences.

Jurema is the spirit of the sacred Jurema tree and considered the most important Cabocla. She presides over the Caboclos’ mythic paradise, which is also known as Jurema. Jurema the goddess is the primary presiding spirit of Jurema the paradise but she is also venerated in the Brazilian spiritual tradition Umbanda and by independent practitioners. In Yoruba-based traditions, Jurema belongs to the line of Oxossi. She is the Queen of Hunters; bestower of wisdom and a spirit of beauty and romance.

Fred Wilson (b. 1954, Bronx, New York) challenges assumptions of history, culture, race, and conventions of display with his work. Known for his politically charged work that explore issues faced by Africans and African-Americans in past centuries, Fred Wilson makes sculptures that are, first and foremost, beautiful. His Murano glass mirrors (2009), made from onyx Murano glass (a color never before used for decorative objects), are glossy and ornate, while Regina Atra (2006), Wilson’s version of the Diamond Diadem, the celebrated crown worn by Her Majesty the Queen of England, is as delicate and opulent as the original. Each is a commentary on the African experience, a theme that is occasionally met with great resistance, as in the case of Wilson’s thwarted efforts to erect a sculpture of a freed slave in Indianapolis, which was to be titled E Pluribus Unum. By reframing objects and cultural symbols, he alters traditional interpretations, encouraging viewers to reconsider social and historical narratives. Since his groundbreaking and historically significant exhibition Mining the Museum (1992) at the Maryland Historical Society, Wilson has been the subject of many solo exhibitions.

Today’s piece of non-gender conforming art history comes to us from Mali and is by a Dogon artist.  Intersex figures such as this one are commonly depicted in Dogon art.  In this scene, we see a figure with a beard, breasts, and what appears to be a penis hanging over labia and a vagina standing with puckered lips which, to Western eyes, would appear to be blowing a kiss or whistling a jaunty tune.

Creating this comic is about more that highlighting traditional Yoruba narratives. It is an exploration of African aesthetics, a blend of western and African artistic techniques. The textile and sculpture arts I use are not simple background, they are an ode to the artistic exuberance of of the Yoruba people and by extension all west african visual art forms. Too often these traditions are belittled as “craft” or “decorative” as opposed to “fine arts”. Their value only recognized when reinterpreted (often misinterpreted) through western contexts. Picasso and Matisse’s asinine obsession with a so called primitive spark ignores the the complex aesthetic and philosophical motivations behind African works of art, ignoring the need to look at it on its own terms. Coolness, spiritual agency, symbolism layered with metaphor within metaphor all are present in the hand and head of the weaver, aladire, carver and potter when they work. The same principles are present in a song, a poem, a proverb or a drumbeat. Whether uttered in Africa and the diaspora, they are imbued with aesthetic and philosophical principles that must be read on their own terms and seen through their own lens. I cannot truly explore the depths of black aesthetics without exploring the power of black arts. That is why it is so important that I make this comic the way that I am making it, To break the delusion of an aesthetic hierarchy that places european ideologies at the top. Hello Everyone!  It has been a while but rest assured I have been steady working and awesome project that has been years in the making. Itan: Part 1 is a graphic novel that is based on the oral literature traditions of the Yoruba people of West Africa. The comic is heavily influenced by Yoruba art and aesthetics, combining traditional West african textile and sculpture traditions with western painting and illustration. Drawing directly from Ifa, the vast corpus of divination poetry used by the followers of the Yoruba Orisa traditions worldwide (as well as other Yoruba verbal arts) I am relaying important narratives rooted in African thought.

We are asking for 250 early adopters to preorder the comic which is set for completion in November 2017. A total of $5000 is needed to print and distribute a 500 copy run of the graphic novel.

visit “Here” to find out how to donate. Support Itan: Part 1 today!
