This was painted over an older painting. It’s nice to work into paint that’s dry sometimes, to get clean unmixed layers happening. I don’t experience this often because I like to finish a painting as fast as I can. Sometimes I think I’d be better off working in acrylics.

The idea behind this painting changed as it went along. Originally I tried to make some people obscured by trees. Now it’s a couple getting frisky in the bushes or trees personified. On another level it could be the two halves of a single person. But it’s not really for me to tell you anyways.

The symbol of a woman on a bull is ancient, prehistoric. There is the Greek myth of Zeus transforming into a bull and abducting Europa. There’s also the fairytale of the beauty and the beast. You could also say it’s an image of overcoming our animal nature or union with our animal nature/shadow. The thing about symbols is they’re ambiguous and mean what they need to mean at the current moment.——-

There was something about the person in the last painting that I liked so I wanted to paint a full portrait of him. When I put the mustache on him it kind of looked like Prince to me. Then I remembered the phrase “prince of painters” and I googled it. There are several old masters referred to as the prince of painters so I went with it.
