Kidagakash was Atlantian, and she was brown-skinned, but she was not Black. She was a woman of color, yes, but she was not Black. “Black“ is not interchangeable for anyone who is darker than snow white. ”Black“ is not simply being brown-skinned. Blackis being Black.

I don’t know much about Atlantis but the few things I have read are of Atlantis originating from or having ties to Africa. Critias said Atlanteans had conquered parts of Libya and Eygpt.

If people want to code Kida as Black, that’s alright with me.

Surely though, if Disney announced her as the first Black Princess back in 2001, people would be offended as her African heritage is not apparent and her skin is light. Only after Tiana, do people stretch and say she’s the first in defense of Disney’s lack of representation. There is actually some people who are proud of being represented by Nala rather Tiana, as Nala kept her “true Africanness throughout the film” while Tiana was a frog for majority.

image

While Atlantis is fictional like Maldonia. I think the reason why these people above thought Naveen was Black is because Fictional Country + Brown Skin = Black to them.

There are extensive mythos on Atlantis, and I haven’t read all of them but I do know that the Greeks believe that Atlantis was the realm of Poseidon and Cleito. Regardless, they are still myths and don’t have much to do with Disney’sportrayal of Kida, which was not being “Black”. Someone who is Black is someone who is of African descent; given that she is part of a mythical race of people, she isa woman of color because she is not White, but calling her “Black” is completely inaccurate, and diminishing Tiana’s role as the first Black princess is completely unfair.

Her not being Black has nothing to do with her skin color; I’ve seen Black people who are that light, but that doesn’t change the fact that Kidagakash is Atlantean. The Disney story was that Atlanteans were a human race like everyone else around 10000 B.C., but then a comet crashed and broke off a large chunk of Earth which fell into the sea; the people somehow adapted and built their fortress underwater. They were never meant to be Black, they were not presented as Black, because they are not Black by any means. They’re people of color, though fictionally, which is great in and of itself, but they are a fantasy race presented with 0 ties to Africa or any other continent for that matter.

Thus, like I said, I’m willing to smack anyone who says that Kidagakash was the ‘first Black princess’ and that Tiana shouldn’t be heralded as such because she was “second” or “typical”. Kidagakash is a wonderful character. I absolutely lover her, as I love Tiana. They were bothmonumental parts of my childhood—though one a LOT later—but taking away the fact that Kidagakash represented a strong, fantasy woman of color to diminish Tiana’s being Black is ridiculous. It’s not about being “truly African”, or skin color or whatever, it’s the fact that she wasn’t Black and was never presented as Black

It robs the series of its diversity anyway, considering that Dr. Sweet was a non-stereotypical Black man who was unquestionably Black and not mixed, Audrey was unquestionably Latina and even spoke Spanish, and Kidagakash was the strong, woman of color deurotagonist who came from a fantasy race. That doesn’t mean she can’t be inspirational to women / girls of color, to me it means the opposite; making her “Black” just misses the point for me.

Very insightful, thank you for the correction!

May I just add that even though Princess Kida is ‘Atlantian,’ millennia of ancient lore depicted Atlantis at the Strait of Gilbatrar, which is where Spain and Africa meet.

Kida was also voiced by Cree Summer, an African American voice actress, who’s known for voicing Susan Charmichael in Rug Rats and Valerie Gray in Danny Phantom.

Both female characters were also established as African American.

A lot of the Atlantian culture Disney gave the animation was also inspired by multiple African ethnicities—especially their masks. I’m not labeling Kida as any race, those are just additional facts.

Had a dream about beauty and the beast and I was a stick of butter but beast was pissed I wasn’t do my job right then threatened to throw me into the fireplace I said ‘if it’ll make you feel butter’ the guy couldn’t have yeeted harder I laughed myself awake

The biggest cliches are actually the least cliche since everyone avoids them like the plague.

Have an idea for your story but it’s too cliche? Nothing is too cliche. Things are cliche because people can’t get enough of that shit. Go and make that bitch the hugest cliche anyone has ever fucking seen and I will fully endorse it.

I originally made this edit to feature in my charlastor fanfiction: Soul Switched: Ch. 10 but I began the story long before Charlie’s official name & design change so this is what I worked with (*^_^*)

I’ve stared at this edit for over four hours so I can’t remember how sore it is on the eyes therefore my apologies in advance (ー ー;)

You can read it on Ao3 here ^^ —>

callmearcturus:

for real, if you see a fic that seems abandoned but you really want to see if it might be completed

i would genuinely suggest not mentioning the fact its abandoned at all. instead, just leave the most effusive comment you can. tell the author specifically what you liked. if they are in a position they might continue it, you might remind them what they liked about the story, and thus maybe revive it.

that is probably your best bet to get a story finished, much more than asking “hey is this abandoned” or asking for it to be continued.

This

W H A T. Is he wearing.

(No for real I’m asking I can’t even tell)

I woke up way later than planned today, so I missed the big reveal and actually pretty glad I did. Meant I was able to live in a dying fantasy just a little bit longer.

Αи∂ нєrє, Ι ρrєѕєղт тσ уσυ, тнє ղҽա ɑղժ íʍթrσνє∂ᎪᏞᎪᎦɬᎾᏒ:

≫ I’ll try to make this quick, so here we’ll review everything including the following, most notable, changes:

• microphone

• white

• pants

• w h i t e

Troυѕerѕ:

As I predicted, she changed Alastor’s pants to black after Charlie Morningstar’s recent all red outfit, and it looks good It’s a simple accent and easily goes with the rest of the ensemble.

Мoυтн:

His teeth are now shaped slightly different, whereas they used to protected out of his gums individually, they now sort of blend together more. I do like this shape better, they really give Alastor this even more flashy, yet suave, type of essence, you know?

If you look closely, his tongue has changed from grey to red. I personally liked it grey better, as it looked less human on him, but it still works (I also hope his gums are still black as Viv once stated). In a small fraction of frames in the pilot, his tongue is shown as red, which has always confused me; maybe it’s an error idk. But anyway, now it’s officially red.

Gloveѕ:

Alastor has lost the classic, spotted-knuckle pads we used to see on his gloves, which were cannon. Now, I’m not so sure—that may have changed in his new design. Those could be his actual hands now, it’s too soon to say until Vivzie decides to specify otherwise.

Oυтғιт:

Idek where to start.

His sleeves are the same color, but his torso changed. The pinstripes are still the same color, but his chest is a lot brighter now. Is he wearing a vest now??? If so, the colors are clashing horribly with how the sleeves are darker. If it’s still a jacket, then call a new tailor it looks like his went colorblind. But his collar is also colored the same as his sleeves—as it would when someone wears a vest. Even though I hate the new changes rn, idk what’s up because Charlie’s new look is still very stylish and fashionable ✨

But…this? The white doesn’t match his outfit, and not only that, it’s the only trimming on his clothes colored that way, so it’s incredibly out of place. For the sake of styling….I hope it’s a vest, because that would make one funky overcoat O.o

Now, for all us tail lovers, not to worry! There’s still plenty of room for Alastor to hide a fluffy deer tail under that jacket/waistcoat thingy I assure you so we must not lose hope!! (〃ω〃)

Mιcropнone:

Yes, Viv did make an attempt to change his inner microphone from a pastel to white so something would coordinate with the new white trim (and the coffee cup, so as long as he always has a drink with him there is still hope), though he doesn’t carry it half of the time anyway, so that new hem will be standing out a lot all by itself but….yeah. The mic also lost one of its rims, now it only carries one. I almost overlooked that, so despite liking the previous style, it’s not a big deal. I still want to know if she made the staff longer or not, but it’s tucked out of sight here, so we still have yet to find that out.

ВUT тσ ѕυм тнιղgѕ υρ—

Now I’m not going to get into crap like if stuff suits their personas or character/OOC analysis, this is just a fashion overview. It seems Vivzie traded Alastor’s suit/jacket/vest flaps for white so she could give his old darkened ones away to Charlie Morningstar’s new pantsuit that was copy and pasted, switched both of their pant’s colors (black≠red), while using white on Alastor in a way to almost compliment Charlie’s complexion so we don’t get epilepsy when they’re next to each other…? Idk.

Honestly, not even worried about that anymore. It looks like she still got too many complaints about too much red in the pilot—that’s been happening since the thing aired, but I personally always liked the wild pink and red neon schemes up until she tried to pull a switcharoo with Alastor & Charlie, then tried to overcompensate his style to make up for the new changes so they wouldn’t ‘twin.’

But FR tho, ngl at this point Alastor’s old outfit would have looked more tolerable beside Charlie’s new one more than this updated suit. I mean it’s better than looking at an outfit that doesn’t even match by itself, for Hell’s sake it looks like he’s wearing patchwork I can’t stand that small-itty-bitty-isolated WHITE, I’d rather have to see more black on him than that color.

And since black was already and still is his primary monochrome accent, while Charlie’s is now white (instead of her EX. black trousers & suspenders), adding her new monochrome accent to Alastor’s outfit as well, on TOP of all the other shades he is already displaying somehow makes them clash with each other further yet. I’m not kidding, now it looks like Alastor is trying to keep up with Charlie

as for Alastor’s new look…

Okay so I slept on it last night and maybe—just mAyBe—I’d be okay with black trimmed sleeves instead of red, the change of the design on his shirt underneath, perhaps a shorter collar, or maybe slightly bigger antlers, but those are all the changes I can think of rn that I’d be able to cope with.

I guess I can see Viv changing his pants to black now that Charlie is the one with the full red on red pant suit—a solid red pantsuit…I feel like trading their pant colors is the only thing that’s going to keep viewers from going blind without making any other major changes to Alastor at this point.

But tbh other than Alastor’s obv perfection, I’ve always wished his staff was a little bit longer idk it always just seemed pretty short for his height? If his eyes ever changed like Charlie’s I’ll flip a mother fucking table Ik ppl are sick of red on red and heard complaints about them but I just love those crazed insanely haunting tones that also can hold this soft glow to them in his gaze just gAH LOVE IT

But on another thought, what if he was given a full sized rack?? NOT THAT RACK YOU PERVS!! But not a cartoonish one like those itty bitty twig branches we see growing in the art or comics or whatev but what about realistic antlers you’d see on a six pointer?

Like this……

wolfmoonjournal:

It’s really fascinating how the fandom condition has changed, even over the past few years (and I can’t help but blame tumblr for a lot of it, whether that be a good or bad thing) and how old-school fans and critics have dealt with the shift. It’s definitely worth a much more detailed and in-depth piece than this but here goes anyway.

Imagine, though, a girl in her teens who never really grew out of her “being fixated on stories and characters” phase. She discovers that fanfiction is a thing one day in Kroger while flipping through the an issue of magazine ‘Movie Magic’ dedicated to Harry Potter. It makes her so excited that she is buzzing happily with delight that there are others out there besides her who write stories based on their favorite characters and tales. She buzzes this way for the rest of the day and much of the following week.

However, it’s actually not until a few years later that she actually delves into fandom and the culture surrounding it. Still, once she starts, she discovers that the online fan culture helps make her enjoyment of different movies, books and television shows that much more rich. She realizes that she can embrace her fandom side.

After discovering tumblr in her early twenties, this girl starts a ‘Supernatural’-based one and begins interacting with others in the fandom. She makes friends - some that she keeps, others that she sadly loses contact with but still thinks of often. Through the community she engages is discussion of fandom theory, meta-analysis and gains a deeper understanding and story structure that applies across the board. At one point she meets someone outside of her fandom world who, after knowing her for the better part of two days asks “Wow, did you major in literature or something?”

(No, she didn’t. She’s actually a surgical technician in the veterinary field).

If it weren’t for fandom, this girl would never have met some of the people she has. If it weren’t for the fact that she (relation)shipped Dean/Castiel, she never would have traveled to some amazing places. Never gone out of her way on a roadtrip just to visit with some wonderful people, never run around in New York City or seen a Broadway show.

Connections are made, friends are made, fandom has transcended.

Tumblr, which was kind of an inside joke in the beginning (”I like your shoelaces.” “Thanks, I stole them from the President”) has now become mainstream. Shipping has become mainstream. Fandom in general has become mainstream.

This leads to some interesting conflicts because not very long ago, “hard-core” fandom itself was joke fodder (except for ‘Galaxy Quest’, which was YEARS ahead of its time) and fanfiction was synonymous with “terrible writing”. But now we have fandom and fanfic being referenced positively in all kinds of media. In just one example, Rainbow Rowell’s hit novel ‘Fangirl’ featured a slash-shipping protagonist. People are realizing that some fanfiction is as well-crafted and written as any of the best published, original literature.

Fandom is being taken seriously at last, which of course is frustrating to those who are used to being able to take pot-shots at the culture with little to no backlash. But it’s the fact that some people are going to the trouble to comment angrily and repeatedly on fan culture that proves that fandom really has broken the mold.

The downside to those in fandom and the aforementioned girl (who, if you haven’t gathered, is me) is that knowledge of plot, story structure and continuity makes flaws in a story stand out in stark relief.

It’s part of why she no longer watches ‘Supernatural’ and can’t watch a movie without picking it apart and discussing it at length.

Unfortunately, when there is disillusionment with source material/canon, and fans are confident that they could have done better when structure is ignored in favor of drama, plots never expanded on, etc., it can lead to heated feelings.

The internet is a battleground to begin with (this is NOT something unique to fandom, just check the average post on Facebook, the average news story comment or any comment thread on YouTube) and things can definitely blow up.

Fandom has lovingly termed these kinds of blow-ups as “wank”, which may be the only time in the history of the internet that sexual slang has been used to describe something having nothing to do with anything sexual. Wank can be really frustrating to deal with in fandom, especially if it’s happening with any regularity in a fandom you are in. And honestly, if you are in a non-wanky fandom, chances are it’s a relatively small or new one.

Sadly, fandom wank tends to make waves and it’s what the non-fandom public sees and associates with the culture. Because let’s face it, fandom wank is loud and unmoderated. With the internet you can tweet or comment something angry and enraged and post it before you have time to think and ponder ‘should I have reallyhit post?’

So fandom does have its negatives but, truth be told, the negatives and wank are usually based in something legitimate. It’s just, as with a game of telephone, the uproar tends to morph into something outrageous and lose sight of the original intent.

Maybe for those with little grasp of modern fan culture, it’s easy to compare angry fans to psychopathic fictional characters but to those in fandom, it really highlights that little grasp.

If something doesn’t add up, we’re going to say so. Never before have we been able to provide such instant feedback that is actually HEARD by The Powers That Be (TPTB).

For those still used to pre-internet-fandom, the new revolution of instant fan feedback and opinion is probably distressing and troubling. However I tip my hat to those successful up-and-comers who know where their towel is and have capitalized on and embraced such fan following. That’s one of the reasons I love ‘Gravity Falls’ so much, it actually utilizes fandom over-scrutiny to add to the storytelling.

I believe this is the wave of the future. The pressure is on for creators to cater to a generation of fandom culture that knows the ins and outs of storytelling and has a broader and less traditional viewpoint. As this is such a new concept for some creators, it is going to take some getting used to.

(P.S. Devin Faraci tried to fight with me and subsequently blocked me on Twitter because I retweeted a bunch of things he’s said over he years about fan culture, which are handily quoted in this Tumblr post! Please enjoy! :D )

So as we all know, movie critic Devin Faraci caused a minor internet brouhaha Tuesday with a controversial piece about online fandom. “Fandom is broken” — which piggybacks off a milder but similar article published last week by the AV Club and argues that fan culture has entered an ugly phase — was largely met with solemn nods of agreement by everybody except, uh, anybody who’s actually in fandom and actually knows what the fuck fan culture is about.

The main target of the piece is fan entitlement, which Faraci believes is the result of fandom being “post-fanfic.” That is, he thinks the current state of fandom — which can be overwhelmingly polarized and activist — is a natural result of fans having so much personal autonomy over their own fanfiction and other fanworks (including fanart, fan film, fan meta, shipping, and fan theories). Consequently, they seek to have the same level of creator control over their canons, too.

Before we go any further, let’s be clear here. Some people should be told at all times that their diminishment of cultures they don’t understand only makes them look small, petty, and ridiculous. Faraci is one of those people. He has demonstrated again and again that he has only a cursory understanding of what fanworks-based fan culture is, and utterly no interest in examining it to a closer degree.

Faraci’s consistent response to fanworks and remixing in general is to be cavalierly dismissive. Please enjoy this litany of Faraci being cavalierly and unilaterally dismissive of virtually every fannish practice, from shipping to fan films to fanfiction:

To anyone who’s spent any amount of time immersed in fan culture, Faraci’s attitudeabout fandom is unilaterally tone-deaf, laughably inaccurate, and full of hubris. He is jawdroppingly secure in his opinions, and when you attempt to suggest that fanworks are far more complex than he’s acknowledging — as I once did in a brief exchange after one of his derisive tweets about fan theories — he typically dismisses you out of hand or ignores you altogether:

image
image

And then there’s this gem:

image

When I retweeted all of these tweets just now, Faraci responded by a) calling me out to his 40,000 followers, most of whom are apparently male and who naturally began brigading and harassing me on Twitter; b) blocking me, and c) tweeting this:

image
image

So. Now that we’ve established that Devin Faraci is a dismissive demeaning sexist shitbag and everything he says about being “concerned” about “fan entitlement” is concern trolling because he HATES fanworks and fans who create stuff and overanalyze and generally actively engage with texts, let’s move on, shall we?
