Your feet are blistered and bloody. You’ve been walking for hours. Your throat is dry, your eyes puffy and swollen; watery. Your sundress is tattered and ripped and you don’t know why. You can’t remember. You don’t know where you are, why you’re here, or how you ended up in this place - but the fear sitting in your belly is the only thing keeping you moving.

It’s dense here. Thick, green, lush trees and shrubs line the dirt path that you walk on. Sun rays peek through the treetops, but because they’re so thick, the trees, it looks like a dark day; a muted day. You can hear birds chirping, little bugs buzzing around, even spot a butterfly or two. It’s beautiful - but ominous. Like there’s danger lurking just around the bend.

You hear crackling in the distance - leaves being crunched, twigs being broken - and you freeze, snapping your head towards it. You swallow hard as you zero in on the noise, everything else going silent around you. You clutch the hem of your dress in your hand, as it’s the only tangible thing that makes any of this real, and just listen. Your heart beats loudly in your ears. A bead of sweat slips down the side of your face. Your breath is shallow.

I am in awe! This world you have created is fascinating. From the characters and their individual curses – I mean the way you described Bucky’s transformation by sound alone, I had chills; to this hidden community where even though everyone is struggling a bit, it’s like a little paradise…where everyone is without clothes…

I appreciate the time you took with settling us into this world, learning it through the reader’s eyes. That first meeting with Steve, it was just too beautiful, I had to scroll back up and see what the main pairing for the fic was because hell, I wouldn’t mind reading about him finding love either! When we got to Bucky though, I was like oh yes, this tortured soul. He is going to fall in love and omg you did not disappoint!

I felt like there was more that you wanted to explore and explain, for instance where Brock came from and how his curse relates and differs to the rest, but I understand, you were at 11k!! I’m just saying I would totally read more of this universe. You did such an incredible job, thank you for sharing with us!!

The Hazel Wood & The Night Country

By Melissa Albert

The Hazel Wood and its sequel, The Night Country, are stories I almost wish I could experience again for the first time. An exploration of the fairytale underworld, the tales follow Alice, a beleaguered, haunted teenager, as she lives a piece-meal life, constantly moving cross-country with her mom. The duo flees makeshift homes regularly, with bad luck always nipping at their heels.

Though Alice and her mom live modestly, Alice’s grandmother is world-renowned, the author of a sublimely notorious and equally hard-to-find compendium of fairy tales. After receiving word that the estranged grandmother has died, mother and daughter finally settle in NYC, sighing with relief that their bad luck is behind them. Finally, Alice has a chance at a normal life.

But then, Alice’s mom goes missing and all clues point to the grandmother’s mansion, and beyond - to the morbid world of her concocted fairytales, tales that are starting to materialize on the streets of NY.

The Hazel Wood is a gritty Brothers’ Grimm bumming a cigarette, a jaded teenager stuck on the dark side of a NYC daydream, a haunted subway ride. It’s the stuff of nightmares but more gruesome and modern than Grimm. Imbued with young adult emo, it is also surprisingly poetic - much like our teenage years.

The Night Country follows in its footsteps, imagining a world that would make Mary Shelly shiver.
Albert’s world is a fanatical escape for these dark times if you want to get away and indulge simultaneously.
And for those hungry for more of Albert’s macabre marvels, the actual book of grandmother’s fairytales is slated to be released this winter. A book within a book. How apropos for a tale like this… Just take care you can separate story from reality. Fairytales are, after all, only make believe… aren’t they?

The Farm

by Joanne Ramos

At one day past my due date, I am currently in either the best or the worst position to review Joanne Ramos’ thought-provoking page-turner The Farm.

At the moment, the slightly-too-plausible premise of farming out pregnancies via pricey surrogacy does not seem so bad. Having endured morning sickness occurring all times of day that does not cease after 1st trimester, exhaustion tantamount to being hit repeatedly by a bus, never-ending constipation and pains in places I didn’t know existed, might I hire someone to trade places? Tell me where to VENMO.

And yet, in a way, this isn’t even what The Farm is about. The bookstore employee suggested it was like The Handmaid’s Tale, perhaps in an effort to warn my obviously gestating self that it might not be the best time to read it. In fact, it is only really like The Handmaid’s Tale in that there are pregnant women at its center.

It’s also not about the price of motherhood, the high-achieving women who are penalized at work for having children, nor about the fact that the US is the only developed country without paid maternity leave. These topics could have doubled the size of the book - and I would have gladly read more.

WhatThe Farm is about is far more personal and insidious - a sort of collective history and culpability woven into the fabric of the American flag - Betsy Ross stitching in her trinity kitchen all the while going blind.

The story follows Jane, a young Fiipina mother, trying to survive in NY. Her cousin presents her with an opportunity: interview at Golden Oaks, a resort-style surrogate facility, where the wealthiest clients pay top dollar to outsource their pregnancies. The facility provides comprehensive nutrition, weekly prenatal massages, yoga, wellness tracking and …alpacas. There she meets Reagan and Lisa, two caucasian “hosts,” who pull her into their orbit. With the payouts for healthy babies so huge, each “host” has her own reasons for signing up for 10 (yes, look up how long pregnancy actually is) months of incarceration, so to speak.

In addition to a brilliantly-paced speculative fiction thriller, what starts to unfold is a social commentary about opportunity, access, immigration, and skin tone.  And by the end of the novel, as Jane marvels at her own brave smart daughter, I start to wonder about the American Dream - who has been duped and who is benefitting from doing the duping. We expect it to pay its dividends in one lifetime. Come “your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” not well,…three generations down the road. And when my own great-grandmother emigrated, gnawed family photo in hand, I wonder if she ever thought about three - and any day now, four - generations down the line, and where her sea voyage would lead.

And perhaps it’s not that the American Dream is dead - perhaps we just always thought it was free. What if it’s always been pricey? And the questions are: how much are you willing to sell?Andhow much are you willing to pay?

Let the bidding begin.

The Warehouse

by Rob Hart

Blake Crouch told me to read this book.

Ok, not personally, but still.

Initially, I read the first chapter, shrugged and put it down, slightly discouraged by the glossy magazine-sheen styled tone.

Then I received a BookBub email with Blake Crouch’s recommendation to read The Warehouse.

Having just acknowledged in my last B3 post that I might in fact jump off a bridge if the man suggested, I figured it was reasonable to read his book recommendation instead.

Naturally, I finished The Warehouse within a couple days because as the narrators and perspectives switched so did the tone of the book, making it as palatable as a CloudBurger at LivePlay. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Enter a world where The Cloud is king. Naturally, said world has gone to pot: climate change makes temperatures unendurable, unemployment is ubiquitous, water unpotable, meat scarce, and prospects dire for small business.  But at The Cloud, with fully stocked shelves of shiny goods, air-conditioned dorm rooms, built-in healthcare and tram cars, not to mention LivePlay entertainment and readily available Cloud Burgers, life is good. Well, not necessarily good, but tolerable. Well, not necessarily tolerable, but air-conditioned.

So what if the shifts are 12 hours long, or there’s a $6 bank transfer charge, or you get docked ratings for not volunteering for extra work time? And so what if the bathrooms are constantly out of order, or the cinderblock rooms are the size of closets or your every move is tracked with a wristband?

The Warehouse is like if The Circle were written about Amazon and Apple combined featuring Steve Jobs and Lisbeth Salander set to an employee training video.

But don’t you enjoy having everything delivered at the click of a button? And for a such a reasonable cost? Have you ever wondered after you click “buy now” who is paying for the deficit?

*B3 received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I keep my streams about Wolf Bride light-hearted. It’s been a hell of a year, and I think we all need a space where we can laugh together. But part of responsibly consuming problematic media is being aware of where it fails. And that’s why I think it’s important to talk about Morgan, and Wolf Bride’s troubling depiction of blindness.

Morgan is the first Love Interest in Choices to have a canon disability. She is representation many players with disabilities, like myself, are eager for. But like any form of representation, writing a blind character requires research. And that’s where Pixelberry has failed. A quick google search will lead you to numerousvisuallyimpairedvoices who outline the tropes and stereotypes that harm their community. Wolf Bride has included nearly all of them.

“hajime, i brought you and- oh tooru you’re here too!” her eyes flicker as a mischievous grin takes over her lips. “i thought it was just you two… i’ll be going now!” her giggle fills the room as she wiggles her eyebrows at her son, which earns her an infamous iwaizumi glare.

oikawa interrupts the silence that follows the absence of iwaizumi’s mother, stuffing his face with grapes and muttering a barely comprehensible, “what was that about?”

papers crinkle when iwaizumi begins busying himself to avoid your gaze. he crushes used sheets, scribbles on new ones as if he’s actually working, and rearranges his pencils before grumbling. “she thinks we’re dating.” you don’t miss the way his eyes quickly widen and cheeks flush when he changes the subject. what he doesn’t know is his fumbling distracted oikawa, not you. but second year finals are more important than what just happened, and you return to your studies.

Two years.

It’s been two years since the last time your eyes locked with his.

Two years since the first and last time you said I love you.

Two years since he called it what it was. He never loved you. He never intended on loving you. You’ve known Ransom to be many things. Cruel was never one of them. But one night two years ago, you watched him shift from the man that you fell in love with, to someone you hardly recognized.

It’s not been easy. Actually, that’s an understatement. Shortly after that night, you called Harlan to let him know you were done. He’d pleaded with you to stay, that he would rather keep Ransom from coming around than you, but Ransom was family. You weren’t.

You were just the stupid nurse that fell in love with your patients grandson.

You’d refused to cash anymore of Harlan’s checks after you left, despite the fact that he sent you one every two weeks for the past two years. He warned you that Ran would break your heart, but you fell hard and fast for the mysterious and closed off man behind those striking blue eyes. As if you could have resisted him. You never stood a chance.

Fili’s hands wrung tightly together, anxiously chewing on his bottom lip.  How had he managed to convince himself to do this?  How had he even gotten the courage to ask you to meet? Now, it all felt so overwhelming, that he wasn’t overly sure what to do with himself.

He’d take a few steps, then stop, muttering under his breath, then take a few more steps back the other way, and stop.  If anyone saw him like this, they think he’d have gone mad.

A knock on his door made him jump and he cleared his throat, mentally trying to shake off the growing sense of dread in the pit of his stomach.  “Come in.”

Art school’s live sketching class was a fresh, new, fourth circle of Dante’s Inferno torture. No, you weren’t exaggerating. This was your first day in the studio and you weren’t the one to even pretend that live subject sketching was your forte… far from it! They could make you sit in front of those heritage buildings with detailed flying buttresses and intricate gothic spires and you wouldn’t bat an eye before rendering them to perfection on your cartridge sheet. Hell, those renaissance renditions you did in freshman weren’t too bad either… but this? How were you supposed to look at the men and women sitting on pedestals and replicate their bodies onto a piece of paper?

Miss Fortune ~ Chapter Seven

Miss Fortune - Modern AU

Summary:Everyone in Cranford Falls knows the Prescott family. Not only do they run Miss Fortune’s Crystal occult shop in town, but they’re also known for their psychic abilities. On occasion, they’re even called into service to assist the police on particularly difficult cases. All except Alex Prescott, that is. Unlike her three sisters, she’s inherited none of her family’s gifts. At least that was what she thought until the day the dead guy showed up in her bedroom asking for her help in solving a murder. His own.

Six months after his brother Frerin’s death, Detective Thorin Durin is on a downward spiral of self-destruction until Frerin starts showing up in his apartment, claiming his death was not an unfortunate accident but was, in fact a murder. Trouble is, Frerin doesn’t know who did it, so he wants Thorin to reopen the case and solve it, with Alex’s help.

As they work together to find out just exactly what happened to Frerin, Alex and Thorin grow closer. Neither one knows it, but Frerin isn’t just looking to solve his own murder, he’s trying to help his brother cope with his loss as well, and to find happiness with the Prescott sister who’s known as the quiet one…

Summary:Frerin continues to attempt to play matchmaker, and also tries to convince Alex to tell Thorin about what happened in the mall and the blog threats. Something in Frerin’s case file doesn’t make sense to Thorin…

Terri dropped her back at home and then left for her shift at the Hilltop, while Alex wanted nothing more than to flop onto the sofa and do nothing. She tossed her keys next to the Waterford crystal bowl on the coffee table and kicked off her purple Chuck Taylors by the dark blue easy chair. The silence told her that her sisters were nowhere to be found and that was just fine with her. She really didn’t feel like sharing just then. In fact, all she wanted to do was go upstairs and see about taking a nap. Hopefully, Frerin would have found another bedroom to haunt. Somehow, she had the feeling there were quite a few he could find his way to. He certainly seemed the type.

As she passed the closed office door, she paused. Did she dare go and check on the blog? It was actually Charlie’s day to monitor it, but her idea of doing that was to pop in every three or four hours, skim over the questions, and answer the ones she felt like answering and maybe change the image on the home page before going out to do whatever she wanted. The others were left for her sisters. Probably a good idea to go take a peek.

Playing With Fire ~ Chapter Twenty-Eight

Dunraven Pub - Modern AU

A/N: Apologies for the delay in posting. Life has gotten in the way a little, but hopefully I’ll get back on track real soon. Thanks for your patience! Also, if you notice either missing or extra Es and Ss - those keys keep falling off my MacBook, so I try to catch them when they go haywire, but sometimes they slip through the cracks. Bear with me until I can get my laptop replaced. :)

Summary: Thorin Durin likes his life just the way it is—his pub is successful, he’s happily playing the field when it comes to women. He wouldn’t change a damn thing about it. At least, not until he meets Leda Andrews, who stops to help him when his car dies on the side of the road.

Leda is new in town, and late for a job interview when she stops to help a guy with his broken down old car. The last thing she expected was for him to be the same guy who owns the pub where she’s applied to be a bartender, never mind to be one of the hottest men she’s ever seen.

Sparks fly, and while Leda’s got a few ground rules that Thorin is more than willing to abide by, neither one of them expected their fling to turn into anything more serious, or that they would be faced with a situation neither one is prepared for. So, what happens when a no-strings-attached affair teeters on becoming the real thing…

By the time the game finally ended, Leda didn’t care if football season ever came back. She was beyond exhausted, sinking into one of the low chairs over in the dining area. A heavy, weary sigh rose to her lips and she leaned over to put her head down.

There was nothing friendly about the raging blizzard. In the blizzard, there was no way to know which direction to go and the usual landmarks were hidden behind the white flakes that swirled so viciously. The lost soldier raised his hand to shield his eyes from the blinding winds.

The gale whipped each flake into a projectile that stung the unguarded skin. The soldier slowly lifted his foot and placed it in front of the other, forcing himself to keep moving. His body was aching, and his reasonably new battle wounds were bleeding violently. All he could do was to bow his head until his chin touched his chest and keep walking.

You guys need to read this! @webslingerholland is my favorite writer on here!!!!

I know, you’ve had your heart broken. Your love was tossed all over the place and your innocence and joy was stolen by that one person whose memory lives in the songs that you keep skipping in your favorite playlists. The places which you used to love so much became so hostile to you, as they bombarded you with the memories that you desperately want to forget. The person who became your home suddenly left, and you felt like you were wandering alone in the streets, looking for a higher purpose. All you wanted to do for so long was to hurt people, in the same way that you’ve been hurt, and who could blame you really? After all, even clouds can take so much until they burst into a pouring rain, washing away everything that comes its way. You tried to find love someplace else, in a place where your mind led you, and everything felt good and comfortable. Yet it never truly felt like love… like home. You may have spent nights, crying yourself to sleep and blaming yourself for being a bad person, feeling broken for the fact that you couldn’t fall in love. And whilst your friends talked about their new hair, you daydreamed those conversations away by stirring your coffee and thinking that you may never fall in love again. But as a lighting blade strikes a tree, that’s how love will strike for you. It will be unexpected, and quick, but it will leave you feeling alive yet again. And I promise you, that whatever hyperbole you’ve been taught about your first love, will be irrelevant compared to this love. Because this person, they will complete you. They will have the missing piece of the puzzle that you had been trying to figure out for so long. Your first love did not complete you, you were way too young to even know yourself. Your second love broke you, yet paved the way and matured you for your third and real love. And you will feel their love, on an atomic level. You will physically feel it lightening up your chest, warming your heart, and they will feel even better than home. They will feel like you, and like your own being. This person will not only fall in love with every single one of your flaws, but they’ll make you fall in love with those same flaws too. And when you hug them, you will want to hold onto that hug forever, absorb their essence into yours, and stay in that state for an eternity. And for an eternity you will live to embody each other in the way that no one can understand but you two.

And neither are Democrats, so now what? Stop promoting communism and big government.

Dividing the country doesn’t fix anything so get behind a better cause like drain the swamp.

You don’t need to spend $28 million of tax payer money to fix this situation. Let the one formula factory you guys shut down reopen and let people buy formula from Canada and Europe and this can be quickly fixed.

Also, at the state level we need our politicians to not agree to only allowing one company’s formula qualify for WIC (this isn’t in all states, but still in too many.) This entire formula shortage is the result of government interference via restriction of the market.

Throwing money at a shortage does not fix the shortage.

Against Willpower

Notions of willpower are easily stigmatizing: It becomes OK to dismantle social safety nets if poverty is a problem of financial discipline, or if health is one of personal discipline. An extreme example is the punitive approach of our endless drug war, which dismisses substance use problems as primarily the result of individual choices.

Such a fantastic read on a topic that permeates our health and social systems.
