today I got my hands on a second edition Reader’s Digest Folklore, Myths and Legends of Britain. I was so thrilled when I found it in the market that I didn’t really check its condition, and only noticed that it absolutely reeks of mildew when I got back my nans. There were also cobwebs inside the spine and discolouration on the top. I just spent a good half hour looking up ways to treat mold/mildew in books and deal with the smell, but the advice of “if the book isn’t valuable, it is safest to buy a new copy” came up so often that I decided poke around online and —

im sorry it’s selling for how much??

I mean. Maybe this is just on Amazon? maybe it’s scalpers trying their luck? I decide to look elsewhere. not much is coming up, but here’s two listings on Abe Books for —

guys. i feel like I can’t stress this enough:

I paid £1

i paid £1 for a book that seems to sell for anywhere between the (rough) equivalent of £120 - £500

I’m losing my mind. literally i am going to eat concrete. i am now in possession of a book that i can’t just replace but is definitely not safe to keep without trying to treat the mildew problem im.

I’m going to have to keep this in an airtight container and wear safety equipment every time I want to read it aren’t I

God I love secondhand markets and carboots. you just don’t get thoroughly double-bladed deals like this anywhere else.
