Lots of light? Yes, an unobstructed view of the sky floods this hallway with light.
Lots of sun? Not really. There’s a patch of direct sun that moves across the walls/floors. The parasol helps to diffuse the direct sun so these tropical foliage plants don’t burn or wilt permanently.

Think about direct sun separate from the view of the sky and you will begin to understand the daily/seasonal variations of light. Treat them as the same thing, and you’ll be confused.

Marimo ball owners: have you ever noticed your ball sometimes afloat and other times not?

What could cause this change in buoyancy? Is it metabolic activity differences between night and day? I haven’t touched or disturbed the water in the past 2 weeks and I’m certain I’ve noticed it both floating and sinking. First visit to my monstera as a married couple #monsteramonday

FAQ: plant is lit by a west facing door (seen in photo) that gets a few hours of direct sun and a large north facing window (off screen to the right). At this light level, I can safely pour in about a liter and a half of water each week when I see this plant at church. Monsteras grow as vines so what you are seeing here is 7 vines tied together against a sturdy metal trellis (they’re not rooted against the trellis). FAQ: pot is from @dynastytoronto, there is no drainage hole but I prefer it that way so water doesn’t get onto the shelf. Look closely and you’ll see the plant is potted in a plastic nursery pot, which I prefer for moisture control. I can remove the inner pot and water it at the sink. “No drainage hole” is not a problem when light is right and roots are working.

Shortly after staging this photo, I discovered a rather severe spider mite infestation on this Platycerium superbum - probably got worse because I wasn’t inspecting the plant daily. Plant stand: bought this in Singapore.

2) Anyway, for the past few months, it was growing nicely in this repurposed wooden salad bowl filled with pure sphagnum moss and held together with burlap stapled to the inside of the bowl.

3) Seeing as how the spider mites were congregating around the outside of the pot, I decided to remove the plant entirely and give it a good spray down outside with water. I’ve potted it into a temporary pot where I will monitor it closely. Rusty loppers included for horror movie effect (also because I couldn’t find smaller scissors outside)

Images are typically saved in jpg - a compressed format. The compression algorithm compares nearby pixels and, if they are similar enough, they get converted to be the same, reducing the overall “information” in the picture. However, when a scene has lots of detail (edges, patterns, and hues), the resulting jpg will still be large - this photo was 10 MB compared to the usual 4-6 MB. I wrote all this because I downloaded this image from my wife’s camera and had to wait longer than usual…which gave me time to think about why.

Look at the growth structure of this ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata): the stem has been growing uncut for many years so there is just a single growth point ( 2). Compare this to the usual way of cultivating a ponytail palm - a thick trunk that had been cut, which gives rise to multiple growth points at the stump and thinner leaves. It’s nice to see some mature specimens!

If you’re pumping your air conditioner all day and the air is feeling dry, think about using some indoor plants to improve humidity, like the top image.
One cannot have too many succulents and cacti on a west facing balcony. These tough babies (bottom image) did great over the 40°C week.
