i’m pretty damn l8 to the party but what can i say folks? this punk’s been too busy adventuring around this dingy town, trying to find the smallest bit of charm in it. i’m really trying to stomach staying here, though maximilian and i have been planning more roadtrips here and there and maybe talking about a possible future outside of arcadia, saving up money, etc.

anyway, enough about this hickhole, on to the actual description of wtf ur looking at right now. these were taken during maxie’s 20th bday last week!! holy hell was it a good fuckin time! rach and i started out by surprising her with this very block-y cake lol. ofc max, being the organized nerd she is already had her own PROPER ass cake prepared (LAMEEE..but cute).

long story short after lots of dancing, chatting and (out of tune) singing, we settled down at my place, where i could smoke in peace since sergeant dickhead and mom were nowhere to be found.

a very mushy but hella enjoyable time indeed, that i defo can’t deny.

It’s won a couple of awards (A Bronze Feathered Quill and the NYC Big Book Award), met our sales goals and, most importantly, introduced us to many young readers who told us how important Soph and Tess’s story was. Thanks to @interludepress, our always-supportive publishers, and to the friends, family, librarians, teachers, parents and grandparents who showed so much support!️‍

Having long-wondered what lives beyond the ice shelf, nineteen-year-old mermaid Ersel learns of the life she wants when she rescues and befriends Ragna, a shield-maiden stranded on the mermen’s glacier. But when Ersel’s childhood friend and suitor catches them together, he gives Ersel a choice: say goodbye to Ragna or face justice at the hands of the glacier’s brutal king.

Determined to forge a different fate, Ersel seeks help from Loki. But such deals are never as one expects, and the outcome sees her exiled from the only home and protection she’s known. To save herself from perishing in the barren, underwater wasteland and be reunited with the human she’s come to love, Ersel must try to outsmart the God of Lies.

Let’s talk about the 2nd Edition (while my hair dries)

Image shows the 2nd edition of "In A Word: Trans." The book will have a blue front cover, a pink back cover, and a black spine. J really wants there to be a fancy metallic sticker that says 2nd edition as well.ALT

When I started work on a collection of my comics it was really important to narrate my process with new work.

I wanted the book to be universal and very easy for any reader, so these new comics/pages are VERY cute:

J (a Transgender Nonbinary they/them Witch) stands and sweetly says: Hi! I'm Justin! I'm Trans Nonbinary with they/their pronouns! ...not that I always understood what that meant!ALT

I refer to this chibi version of myself as “Dollface Justin.” I was forced to adopt this simpler style after a fairly severe injury that upturned my life for about three years.

I am a MUCH better cartoonist now.

In the 2nd edition I’d work to make my narration as interesting (if not more so) than the collection itself.

A 2nd edition would showcase (easily) 3x the comics in the 1st edition. It may also ruffle some feathers.

While the 1st edition might be considered “candy coated,” I would make a point of speaking up about how Trans people are treated and how—seriously—we’ve suffered enough!

And besides that, for every comic of mine you’ve seen? There’s about ten more you’ve never seen. I intend to COMB my work and showcase VERY personal art.

It will be me at my most vulnerable and I am happy to do this if it helps someone. And I know it will. I know this.

The “In a Word: Trans Pride Edition” Kickstarter launched June 1st.

There are two very simple goals for this campaign:

To reprint “In a Word: Trans” — cuz we sold out and people want this book (and I’m tired of shrugging at them.)

To raise funds for a my first ever zine, a game called _QU3ST, and/or possiblytheIn A Word: 2nd Edition (AKA “The Blue Boy”)

Moving forward I’d like to be respectful of my readers here!

As we enter that campaign I can create a “Boss Post” wherein I create a giant chain of updates.

or

I can inform y'all of our progress with a post-by-post style of update (leaning toward this one)

Please leave a comment and share this post. That would be lovely/helpful! <3

Fence Series by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad

Nicholas Cox is a sixteen-year-old and an outsider in the fencing world but miraculously he ends up at Kings Row after losing a match to the prodigy fencer Seiji Katayama. What lies ahead of him is a challenging quest to fix his bad technique while learning to be friends with other fencers.

I really loved the drawing style of Johanna the Mad and the straightforward writing style of Pacat let the story flow. I didn’t even realize I was at the end because I kept losing myself in the story. Seiji’s horrible friendship skills and Nicholas’s obsession with trying to beat the best player in the fencing world created a sort of hilarious moments as well as irritating arguments. But that all made the story even better. The other characters in the school were too colourful and from different backgrounds, so there was a sense of mesmerising diversity.

If you’re feeling like reading an lgbtq+ graphic novel after Heartstopper, this one’s worth checking out. I’m madly waiting for the next volume.

Taking a mini break from my thesis to review a few books but this one’s first. After rereading and rewatching Heartstopper, I felt like I was in need of a new graphic novels and this was the perfect choice. Looking forward to reading a few more lgbtq+ books this spring!

Heartstopper Flowers

I’ve been obsessing about the book and series over on instagram, so why not share them here too.
My Heartstopper love started back in 2020 but I rarely read YA novels and graphic novels, so I never thought of sharing too much but oh my I fricking loved the series and how perfect the entire cast is. The tiny changes made it so perfect in the series as well because it fits more to live action. I don’t know how to wait for the second season (if they’re planning and i sure think they do).

Sapphic Book Recommendations

HELLOOO LGBTQ+ AND ALLY READERS!!!! Though I only started reading in my free time about a year ago, I’ve read a pretty good amount of sapphic books that I really enjoyed! Here’s a collection of five books you should consider reading this month (and all other months!!!!)

1. “She Who Became the Sun” by Shelley Parker-Chan

Rep: Sapphic, Genderqueer, Achillean

416 Pages

One of my all time favorites, this is an adult historical fiction, but don’t let that scare you away! If you’re someone who enjoys high fantasy or any books with political drama, you’ll love this. It gave Game of Thrones vibes due to its impeccable balance between telling the stories of individuals, relationships between individuals, and big picture political conflicts. The romance (though it is definitely a side plot) is a very satisfying one as a lesbian myself. There are so many other reasons this book is great, I’m just skimming the surface. Please read this!!!!!!

2. “Last Night at the Telegraph Club” by Malinda Lo

Rep: Lesbian, Sapphic

416 Pages (exact same as the last rec????)

This historical fiction set in the 1950’s follows Lily Hu when she meets Kathleen Miller, and details her exploration of sexuality. Not only does she struggle to grasp her new desires, but she’s also a second generation Chinese immigrant that deals with racism tied to the rampant fear of communism present in America at this time. It goes without saying that this book is a must read, and it puts into perspective the challenges LGBTQ+ people have experienced throughout history and how society still has plenty of work to do to combat homophobia. (Side note, this book seriously made me feel validated as a lesbian that didn’t realize I liked girls until I was around 16, so if you’re in need of a book that reminds you that figuring yourself out is difficult and takes time, and that comphet is real, this one’s great.)

3. “The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea” by Maggie Tokuda-Hall

Rep: Lesbian, Sapphic, Genderqueer

368 Pages

This YA fantasy book is a celebration of our community. PIRATES, MERMAIDS, A WITCH, SERIOUSLY????? The amount of happiness the ending gave me was so intense, it just amplified my sapphic pride. This easy to read and fast paced book is perfect for beginner readers, but DEFINITELY not simple enough to be “too easy” for advanced readers. Anyone that has any kinda of interest in fantasy must read this one!!!!

4. “Crier’s War” and “Iron Heart” by Nina Varela

Rep: Lesbian, Sapphic

464 and 416 Pages (a third???? is 416 the secret recipe for the perfect sapphic book???)

This fantasy sci-fi duology was one of the first sapphic books I read, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget the feeling of validation and acceptance I felt every time I opened these books up. It’s been a while since I read these, so I’m a bit hazy about the details of the plot. Just know it has the enemies to lovers AND the body guard to lovers tropes. ‘Nough said. Also, there were some side characters that were nonbinary, but they were pretty minor, so this is definitely not the duology to go to for genderqueer rep.

5. “Payback’s a Witch” by Lana Harper

Rep: Lesbian, Bisexual, Sapphic

352 Pages

This adult romance/fantasy book was just a whole ton of fun. Witches, a revenge plot against an ex-boyfriend, and falling in love with an acquaintance from childhood, all set in a town that gives Halloweentown vibes. Honestly, for the best reading experience, I’d save this one for October, but you’ll be able to enjoy it any time of the year! While the plot didn’t blow me away with profound themes, it still took me only about three days to read this book, I just couldn’t put it down (I’m a slow reader)!! It was wickedly funny (with a good amount of spice, so be wary of that if you don’t like that kind of exposure), and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. If you’re a fan of drama and witches you’ll love it!

There you have it! Five of my favorite sapphic books! I hope you were able to add some new books to your TBR thanks to this post! Additionally, I really need to read more books with more LGBTQ+ representation than just sapphic, so feel free to reblog to add recommendations! Thank you for reading!

In which Gin is all of us.

This page was in my thesis but didn’t make it into the final book but I still love it!

A  gay rock star, a bisexual guitarist, and summer love =

A Summer Soundrack for Falling in Love by Arden Powell is currently available on Kindle Unlimited. The book is FREE for subscribers until it leaves KU at the end of February. Non-subscribers can snag it for $3.99.

Summary:

What he wanted was a music career. What he needed was love.

When Kris Golding leaves his dusty Kansas hometown for a fresh start in New York, he thinks an apartment and a job are waiting for him. But when he finds neither, rather than admit defeat, he takes his chances busking—and meets Rayne Bakshi of international rock band The Chokecherries. Rayne needs a new guitarist, and gives Kris his first break since leaving home.

Rayne wears makeup and glitter and thinks nothing of kissing Kris in front of twenty thousand screaming fans for the attention. Instantly infatuated, Kris begins to question whether he might have a crush on Rayne—could he be bisexual? But since Kris originally claimed to be straight, Rayne’s wary of getting involved offstage.

As their tour gains momentum, Kris’s sexuality becomes the least of his troubles. Between his conservative brother hell-bent on “rescuing” him from his life of debauchery, a peacock that may or may not be the avatar of a cult god, and a publicity stunt that threatens to upend the band, Kris is definitely not in Kansas anymore.

BySara Schmidt-Kost

The start of the new school year is upon us, and as such, it’s a good time for educators, families, and students to update their libraries with both fiction and non-fiction books. It is so important to keep our classroom libraries stocked with all types of diverse books to give our students the opportunity to see themselves and their families in the stories that they read. So if you’re a teacher gearing up for the school year ahead, I hope you consider adding any and all of these to your classroom bookshelves!
