thinking about how frustrating it is that some people will weaponise every new piece of good queer rep against previous pieces of rep to paint them as not enough or no longer valuable instead of appreciating each positive piece of rep as a necessary stepping stone to the next

I really wish people would understand that there are other forms of queer rep besides two same gendered people kissing.

A queer character is queer rep regardless of their romance or a lack thereof even. Ace and aro people exist. Trans people exist. Bi people exist. Queer characters are rep by existing, not just by who they interact with. If a character is nonbinary, they are queer rep whether they kiss someone or not. A bi character in a relationship with someone a different gender is still queer rep because they are still bi. Queer characters can even just be friends with one another. They can be single! And still be queer because that’s who they are not who they do!

This whole trend of deciding if art is valid representation based on romance and ships is reductive and dismissive of identities existing within individuals. And of the communities that we all need.

Just please, stop reducing entire identities down to relationships. Its all good and fun to enjoy your ships, but you have to remember the community is bigger than just romances.

Actually, watching folks continue to insist that any queer relationship that isn’t explicitly and overtly romantic or sexual in media is “cowardly” is not only exhausting, but genuinely fucking infuriating.

First, queer coding is not the same as queerbaiting, and queer coding absolutely had and still has its place in all types of art, second, it’s restricting to the types of characters and stories that queer artists can create, especially queer creators who are not out, professionally or at all, and third, your conceptualization of what is queer enough is exclusionary. End of story.

At first I was like, “Why is the rainbow our symbol? That sounds stolen, can’t the community come up with something original?”

Now it’s just, “H̴̟͛e̴͍̽͝h̶̹̺̔é̷̡̳h̷̫̔͝ȇ̷̖̋h̷̖̚e̵̻͑̆ḧ̶̛̻́ê̸̡͈̑h̸̢̙͊̎e̷̛̺h̶͚͒̚ rainbows are gæ✨ die mad haters”

gays aren’t “starved for representation” you just refuse to watch anything that isn’t a marvel movie

“but gay representation still hardly exists in the mainstream” gay rep will NEVER exist in the mainstream if you don’t support indie lgbt projects, if you don’t prove the demand for depth for complexity for love, if you don’t just fucking google actual lgbt films

seeing a couple people on this post talking about how there’s no media about lgbt people of colour. here’s a list of over 100 films with lgbt protagonists of colour.

Oh if your so smart then where is my happy ending lesbian film that isn’t a period piece, only featuring teenagers, or set in like the 80s/90s????

I could list at least 30 films like this you definitely haven’t seen but I’m not going to make it easy for you bc you ship snarry and sound like a cunt

getting teary eyed thinking about gerda gottlieb’s paintings of her wife after she transitioned

thing is, for a lot of these paintings it wasn’t “after” lily elbe’s transition. there was no after to it. the one op posted was painted in 1928. this was 2 years before lily legally changed her name and began undergoing revolutionary gender affirming procedures. unfortunately she died due to complications of an experimental uterine transplant in 1931.

up until that point, during the day lily continued to dress in masculine clothing and even attended galleries showing gottlieb’s paintings of her. which was kind of iconic. she got to stand in a room full of people who were marveling her beauty, not knowing she was right next to them. it must have been such a cute little secret for them as a couple.

here’s gerda and lilly together

not to mention that for most people there is no real “after” to a transition. especially for these trans historical figures who had to balance identity and safety at all times.

i think having a wife paint these portraits must have felt really amazing for lily. to be able to see herself through the eyes of someone who loved her. i’m very much seconding op on the getting teary eyed.

here are some of my favorite gottleib lily paintings

“I think having a wife paint these portraits must have felt
really amazing for Lili. To be able to see herself through the eyes
of someone who loved her.”

Gallery Attendee: Oh, this! This is absolutely sublime!
Your model is the most beautiful woman in Paris

Gerda Gottleib: The world, actually.

Lili Elbe, standing beside them in masculine attire: *cries*

One thing I’ve learned over the course of my life is that if you feel uncomfortable saying your nown name out loud then maybe that’s not your name

With my new name I’ve found it easier to tell people, I’m able to say it without feeling discomfort, and maybe this’ll apply to others too

Seems like a Dog of Wisdom kinda moment.

Because that’s a good wisdom.

I am not going to abandon the fucked-up little queercoded villain even when I do get a bunch of messy, explicitly queer protagonists in the same deal.

The fucked-up little queercoded villain is the point.

“Stereotypical images, like all aspects of culture, change and evolve over the years. Queer women in classical Hollywood films often appeared as spinster aunts or prison matrons, but by the 1970s, they were often being represented as vampires, a trope that turned same-sex love and affection into something cruel and monstrous. By the twenty-first century, a wide variety of openly queer people and queer "looks” has made it more difficult for the mass media to create new stereotypes, but traces of the old ones can still be discerned.“

This incredible content creator started a campaign to start a queer production company and met 700% of his goal. Check out the video, subscribe to his page, and donate if you can. If you’re like me and cannot, share this video and encourage others to subscribe so this dream can be shared with so many other queer folks out there.

So back in 2020, there was this movie that Blue Sky Studios was producing (Ice Age, Spies in Disguise) called Nimona. It had this enemies-to-lovers plot line between two male leads. And there was supposed to be a kiss somewhere (I’m guessing at the end?). And the other lead was non-binary. ANyway, it was based on the comic by the same name (which was written by Noelle Stevenson AKA She-Ra, Lumberjanes). It was 75% done when d*sney shut down Blue Sky Studios. The only way to save Nimona would be to have another studio pick it up. There’s obviously a couple of campaigns for it since the comic was awesome and this would be great for LGBT representation.

Here’s a link to a petition.

I just wanted to spread the word.

Ok, first we had this

Then this

There was a typo by the way, it’s ‘Castiel’ instead of ‘casting out’, as pointed in the comments below, I fixed it.

I have many questions about these but first one is:

-WHY AM I NOT SEEING DOZENS OF COCKLESMETAS ON MY DASH ???

Second :

-Does Cockles even need metas at this point?

And third : where are my metas and fics and fanarts and metas and people freaking out in the comments like these ones :

And Why are you fandom not freaking out about what Jensen said especially?

“There were some expressions in them that weren’t Castiel, and I remember seeing that and I think that broke me”

Is it because of the typo?

So it’s fixed now, yes ladies and gentlemen, he said what he said, let’s freak out collectively

The Hyades Brigade - WIP Reintroduction

[Image Description: A blue lightning storm with the words ‘The Hyades Brigade’ written over it.]

Happy new year everyone!

Now let’s start off 2022 with a bang ・:*:・゚★ ・:*:・゚☆ ╰(*°▽°*)╯

THE HYADES BRIGADE

SUMMARY

Once every twenty years, a new generation of the Hyades Brigade—the world’s greatest protectors—are rigorously trained to stand at the forefront of humanity. Shining their light down onto the earth with their great strength and wisdom, Ren Yang had longed to be one of them for as long as he could remember.

That was up till, of course, he let his curiosity get the better of him again.

Within the span of a single night, he not only managed to irrevocably fuck up all his chances in the worst way possible, but also got caught in the act by a current active member of the Hyades. Just as he was certain he’d have to sign his own death warrant, she offered him the chance of a lifetime—take her place as Zeta, the emotional link of the Hyades, and she’d never tell a soul of his mistake. A perfect way to redeem himself, right?

He almost wished she just threw him off a cliff instead.

With a mask as cold as ice, social skills more miserable than a dead, flopping fish, and an EQ level that belonged in the pits, he was hardly liked by anyone, let alone capable of becoming the ‘emotional link’ of the team. Top that with the other members being just as big of a problem child as he was, and he was struggling just getting everyone to form one cohesive unit, much less actually turn them into a full-fledged team.

But there was no time for infights and disagreements—deep inside the mountains, strange animals were being found mutilated and hidden within the long cracks of caves. With mysterious sounds haunting the people with every step they take, and the elderly disappearing into the night one by one, the Hyades would have to come together fast in order to fix this mess.

Even still, Ren couldn’t help but wonder—why, out of the hundred candidates remaining, was he the one chosen to be the next Zeta?

Neil got yet another ask about queerbaiting in GO S2, so here is your friendly reminder that implicit queer rep and queerbaiting are not the same thing. If you find yourself watching a show and wanting to accuse it of being queerbaiting, but a good portion of the queer community are saying it feels like good implicit representation to them, take a step back and ask yourself if there really is something you’re seeing that everyone else there managed to miss, or if your past experience with queerbaiting has made you hypersensitive to the possibility to the point of seeing it even when it’s not there.

A lot of people have trauma around queerbaiting. If you can’t enjoy implicit rep because that trauma makes it feel too much like queerbaiting to you, that’s a real and valid emotion. But what your trauma makes you feel is not reflective of objective reality, and your trauma is not an excuse to hurt other people the same way you were hurt.

Pride Month may be ending, but it’s never too late to include LGBTQ+ representation in your writing! Try writing your characters into these scenarios:

  • Person A being afraid to come out to their parents, so Person B let’s Person A practice on them. They go through it several times so that Person B can play out several different options of how the parents might react and Person A can figure out exactly what they want to say.
  • Person A taking care of Person B as they recover from top surgery / bottom surgery.
  • Person A is an experienced drag artist and is helping Person B, who is new to the world of drag, craft their drag persona.
  • Person A has been questioning their sexuality/gender identity for a long time but they don’t know where they belong in the LGBTQ+ community. They decide to confide in Person B and tell them how they feel. Person B says that they feel the same way too and introduces Person A to a label that they’ve never heard of before but describes their feelings perfectly. (You can decide which label it is.)
  • Person A and Person B are a gay couple and their friends Person C and Person D are a lesbian couple. They’re all going to prom together but none of their parents know that any of them are queer. When they meet up so all the parents can take pictures of them before prom, Person A and Person C switch places so they can pose as 2 straight couples. Then, they all say goodbye to the parents and meet up with a different photographer who they’ve hired to take gorgeous prom pictures of them as the beautiful queer couples that they are.

The things I’d do to find mangas/stories with gay couples doing normal things and living their lives that aren’t focussed on the “seme” and the “uke” or have like 0 development regularly.

Like I want a comic where a gay couple work their ways through the struggles of parenthood.

Give me a reincarnation villain manwha where the MC isn’t interested in men but falls in love anyways.

Provide me with lesbians who fight crime while just happening to be lesbians.

Give me the queer representation my little asexual heart needs.

Get me on the right side of the internet.

PICTURE ID: a picture from snapchat taken up close of a digital document. The person who took the photo wrote “If only … there was some kind of … neutral pronoun one could use … instead of he/she.” In the picture itself, it shows a grading rubric. One box reads “He/she (highlighted in pink) presents their (highlighted in green) research well. Also, he/she (highlighted in pink) tries to explain to the audience and has enough eye contact.” The next box reads “he/she (highlighted in pink) presents their (highlighted in green) research well. They (highlighted in green) try to explain to the audience, but it is sometimes unsuccessful. He/she (highlighted in pink) has little unsuccessful eye contact.” Last box reads “From the script, he/she (highlighted in pink) reads little, so does not present their (highlighted in green) research well. He/she (highlighted in pink) does not have much eye contact.” The highlighted portions are to show how the creator of the rubric uses both he/she and the pronoun “they/them” in a way that would suggest that the writer is aware of the neutral pronoun, but also tries not to use it. End ID.
