Painted cervidae skin, 17th century, Illinois, United States.

When this cape is worn in a non traditional way - when the collar of the skin is right of the wearer’s head - the geometrical form of a powerful flying creature can be seen. Eagles, hawks and the spiritual creature “Thunderbird” are very important for Native American cultures. This cape could also be some kind of ritual shroud.

I just ran with an idea I had when I tripped over a dead bird in the middle of the street. It wasn’t as pretty as a rainbow lorikeet but all dead animal squished and crawling with with bugs are kind of beautiful in their own way

On #EarthDay and every day, we make an effort to acknowledge that we stand on land that is part of the unceded, ancestral homeland of the Lenape (Delaware) people. We are committed to addressing exclusions and erasures of Indigenous peoples, and confronting the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism in our work. By actively seeking collaborators, experience and perspectives from Indigenous communities, we work to ensure that our programming, resources and the ongoing community fostered at the Museum is inclusive of Native people.

Indigenous communities across the country have endured the catastrophic impacts of climate change but the situation has an even longer history rooted in the legacies of European colonialism. The artworks shown here are just a few examples of the varied and complex worldviews expressed by  Indigenous artists impacted by environmental destruction.

These objects are part of “Climate in Crisis: Environmental Change in the Indigenous Americas,” on view in the Arts of the Americas Galleries on the fifth floor. The exhibit follows the effects of glacial melt, droughts, wildfires, overexploitation of resources, displacement, and extreme violence, as well as the work being done by Indigenous community organizers to counter the climate crisis and protect the planet.

I’ve got a bunch of stone slabs to work on, thanks to my friend Danielle. Rescued from her parents’ yard! They’re very absorbent, so it takes a lot of layers to create definition. This little buffalo is still a work in progress, but I love the shape!

No pretty hiking photos to share this week. I spent the weekend at a wedding and hanging with friends. Even though I love the woods, it was a good change of pace. Sometimes I get lost in my solitary activities for a bit too long.

Upcoming weekend will be around friends, but with some hikes thrown in, too.

Being productive! A rabbit to accompany my jumping fox piece, plus a bunch of requests started.

I’m slowly collecting feathers, beads, and string for my dreamcatchers. Just need to soak and round out some sticks to get started.

I spent Memorial Day Weekend camping and crafting in the Pennsylvania Wilderness with four of my closest girlfriends. Even though we didn’t make it out to Shenandoah for backcountry camping (our original plan), it was still a much needed and appreciated break from normal life.

More art to come soon. Plus, now I know how to make dreamcatchers!
