LIVE

To Hell & Back helped me find a balance – the place between chasing pleasure for oneself and being empathetic toward others. When we got together to make this film, I could really see that effort for others and effort for oneself are on the same spectrum of opportunity. This song came from my darkest experiences, and as I worked with it, I put several different masks on that experience. At first I saw it through the mask of heartbreak, then the mask of transphobia, then the mask of childhood trauma – a shifting array of masks.  What began with the form of a pop ‘survivor ballad’ became a lesson in discovering the mirrors behind the masks, peeling back the layers to find within my voice the voice of life.

MIKEY. - LOVE LEVITATION music video is out now!!!

Read the interview on KALTBLUT MAGAZINE here

“I chose to film “Love Levitation” in one take – a continuous shot – as a kind of personal challenge. Part of me wanted to test my intuition and performance abilities, to prove to myself that I could cross over into a state of performative trance and be present in it as a do-or-die moment.

Here I’m channelling the X-Men character Rogue, whose touch can kill. From my own experiences of living as a gender-non conforming being, I feel a connection with Rogue because she exists in a place where no one dares to bring their love. The powers and strengths you’ve come to accept are also a curse because you feel you can never be loved like a normal human being – you’re always in-between the in-betweens. “Love Levitation” is an anthem & a reminder about never compromising who you are for someone who isn’t ready for you. Keep being Rogue!”

Rett Madison - Pin-up Daddy

Figgy Baby - Goodbye to Begin With feat. Made By Crooks

Elizabeth Wyld - Child

I wonder what you’d be like to come home to

Elizabeth Wyld captures the rush of a new love in the sweet music video for “Child.” “I stayed at yours and wrote five songs about you,” she recalls, head over heels for the girl who’s coming into her life. Her voice is delicate but strong, like a shoulder to lean on. Gentle backing vocals and a steady guitar strum support her as she carries the melody through its peaks and valleys.

LEOPOLD - Symbols

Every glance is dangerous

German artist LEOPOLD shows off his power poses in the music video for “Symbols,” his debut single. Decked out in glam-pop sequins and high heels, he owns the room. The subtle opening quickly picks up into a party track, telling the story of a chance encounter in a club. At the song’s best moment, his alluring alto escalates into Ariana-esque acrobatics. LEOPOLD recently opened for Big Freedia at Queerfestival Heidelberg and has more European shows scheduled for this summer.

Strip Down - You Can’t Know Me

You’re lying through your teeth

Berlin-based artist Elie Gregory has returned from a hiatus with the defiant track “You Can’t Know Me.” Infectious synths zip around their cool-headed vocals while the music video, filmed in reverse, shows a downpour of colorful paints slowly dripping upwards into nothingness. After revealing their piercing gaze, Gregory is vulnerable but in control of their image. “Marking a new chapter in their career, the raw and unapologetic exposure represents not just a release from imposed gender norms – but acknowledges the stains they leave behind” (EPK).

Lucy & La Mer feat. Bugsy - Rebel Babe

It’s my right to misbehave

In this summer jam, Lucy LaForge rallies her sisters and resisters for a celebration of fluidity. Dancing on the beach to the confidence-boosting track, they bend the rules and topple false binaries. The video also shows LaForge creating a gender-neutral bathroom. “Rebel Babe’s” sunny dance-pop style is new territory for the artist and a promising preview of her upcoming EP I Feel Better Now. It’s an important statement about the dangers of trying to erase and control marginalized groups.

As the singer-songwriter told Billboard, “This is a huge issue of masculine and feminine and how we have to draw this straight line through it and make laws about it. It is absolutely infuriating, and it has caused so many needless problems in our society … We’re dividing people instead of embracing their differences and the fact that there is a fluid gender spectrum and a spectrum of sexuality as well.”

Figgy Baby - Tongue Troubles

All you had to do was speak to me

In “Tongue Troubles,” the first video from his full-length debut, Figgy Baby recounts a common occurrence of being caught between languages and feeling alienated in his experience as a mixed Chicano. “I’m trying to help this lady … I can’t say shit,” he despairs, feeling the sting of her scrutiny because his last name doesn’t match with the language he speaks. A live jazz band brings extra energy to his dynamic performance, supporting his strong lyricism and flow throughout the album.

Fig told QT, “Mixed-Race Mixtape is a coming-of-age story about brown boys finding their way in a Trump world. Growing up ambiguously brown and lacking a supportive community it was hard to know how to claim myself in the face of racist public school teachers, suspicious police and an immigrant father. This album is the culmination of all those experiences.”

LAL - Dead Happiness

Vantage off the ledge

Entering their 20th year as a duo, LAL are bringing their “diasporic electronic” music to Toronto and beyond (VICE). Their new music video for “Dead Happiness” is a visual funhouse shrouding a dark theme. Wearing opalescent makeup and eye-catching costumes, vocalist Rosina Kazi and co. dance to producer Nicholas Murray’s complex soundscape. Kazi denounces the conformity and complacency that she sees around her, longing instead to express herself freely and pursue her own wants and needs.

In their own words, LAL wants “to give rise to compassion in a world that continually sells us cruelty. We aspire to make room for new ideas and ways of being that are connected to the past, while at the same time dancing with the future.”

1992 - I was 17, and drew this portrait of Leonard Bernstein from a photo I saw for the cover of my high school’s literary magazine.

His wild, passionate, perfectly reckless music that channeled so much of the anxious, fast-changing spirit of America was QUEER. He was queer. Everyone knew it. But no one really knew how to talk about it, so it became a footnote. It’s an aspect of his legacy that’s framed separately from his art and his contributions to society. Even though it was probably his sexuality that drove him, that released his creativity, that made him who he was.

Which is why I am really disappointed by the @skirball_la’s single mention of his sexuality in their current retrospective on his life and work (which is otherwise excellent.) SWIPE RIGHT to see the signage. It presents his sexuality to us like a problematic skin condition.

In reality: Leonard and his wife Felicia established an open marriage that suited them, and except for a short separation near the end, they stayed together for 25 years and raised three kids. They were married until she died. It was rocky, and it sounds like L really did go for the boys, but he and Felicia loved each other (letters express it quite clearly), and unless you apply a really starchy definition of heterosexual death-do-us-part marriage, I think that their relationship can be called a relative success.

Yet, this sign only makes mention of: His “complicated” double life – Hiding his passions from public view – Felicia resigning to accommodate his sexuality – The separation and tragic end to the marriage – and no mention of his male companions. Some were famous in their own right, but in this summation of his love life they might as well have been faceless distractions.
WTF?

He didn’t come from a time when people identified as Pansexual, or rarely even bisexual. Maybe he was? However we might choose to assess his sexuality, it was clearly a huge part of his being. And it doesn’t make sense to downplay its importance as we try to understand his art and his genius.

In Issue #17, our Associate Editor Jaclyn Jermyn sat down with PWR BTTM to discuss gender, inclusion

In Issue #17, our Associate Editor Jaclyn Jermyn sat down with PWR BTTM to discuss gender, inclusion, and how to navigate queer identity.

July 9th, 2016: the Bottom Lounge, Chicago

“A handful of queers from Massachusetts walk into the green room of a venue named the Bottom Lounge—stop me if you’ve heard this one before. While this joke might essentially write itself, the punch line is a little harder to pin down. The punch line is PWR BTTM.

The ambiguous genre-shifting duo, comprised of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce—they/them pronouns please—met while attending Bard College. PWR BTTM have often been labeled queer punk by media outlets, and while certainly queer, the punk tagline is something they sometimes shrug their shoulders at. “But what is punk, you know?” says Hopkins. One could offer a Wikipedia definition, but it boils down to an example of counter-culture. Just like the house shows that the three of us spent our formative years hanging out at, PWR BTTM shows are bursting at the seams with symbols of what our society has deemed as a rejection of social normativity.

Their influences are all over the map because as they note, everything is a little bit of a performance and performance makes for great inspiration. Bruce takes cues from their dance background and loves choreographers that put a raw, bleeding edge into their work. Hopkins has a list of influential drag queens a mile long—they both admit to listening to RuPaul’s Drag Race in the car while they drive from venue to venue on tour.”
