Called “the world’s longest art gallery”, this canyon is known for its extensive rock art, most of it created by the Fremont culture and the Ute people. Unfortunately mining and other activities which raise lots of dust have caused irreversible damage to many of the petroglyphs by layering dust into the etchings.

Rock art is one of South Africa’s oldest artistic traditions. It was first made by the ancestors of San|Bushmen and Khoekhoen, South Africa’s first peoples, at least 30,000 years ago. This rock painting depicts San|Bushmen running between eland, a type of antelope that is spiritually important. Hunter-gatherer rock paintings such as this are understood to relate to a ritual practice named ‘the great healing’ or ‘trance dance’, which continues today in the Kalahari outside of South Africa.

See this amazing piece in our special exhibition on South Africa: the art of a nation, which tells a story stretching back 100,000 years. Exhibition runs 27 October 2016 – 26 February 2017.

Exhibition sponsored by Betsy and Jack Ryan

““When the Assyrian Empire exercised political power in south-eastern Anatolia, Assyrian governors expressed their power through art in Assyrian courtly style,” said Dr Adalı.
However, the accompanying inscriptions tell the story of integration, rather than conquest. They are written in the local language of Aramaic, rather than Assyrian, and the artwork features religious themes from Anatolia and Syria.”

RIP Kieth Flint of @theprodigyofficial Your life and legacy has had such an impact on the kind of man I have grown up to be. I will never forget loosing my virginity to “Fire Starter” playing on repeat at my stepdads basement. Those were truly formative times. I think the greatest injustice is that you passed before @jaredleto had a chance to apologize for stealing your look in #suicidesquad. Where you’re going the race never stops my friend.

The Ledberg Stone

Östergötland, Sweden, 11th century

The Ledberg stone, designated as Ög 181, is a runestone located in Sweden. It features a figure with his foot at the mouth of a four-legged beast that is above a legless, helmeted man, with his arms in a prostrate position. This is considered to be a depiction of Odin being devoured by the wolf Fenrir at Ragnarök, the final battle in Norse mythology. During this final battle between the Norse gods known as the Æsir and the giants in which several of the gods meet their death, Odin dies fighting the wolf Fenrir. The battle and death of Odin is described in the poem Völuspáfrom the Poetic Edda.

The runic inscription of the Ledberg stone is carved in the runic alphabet, and is dated to the 11th century. The last part contains section has been interpreted as a rhyming charm or spell and reads: þmk iii sss ttt iii lll which is to be read as þistil mistil kistil or thistle, mistletoeandcasketrespectively. NEW DISCOVERY!!!

Eight-mile wall of prehistoric rock art in Colombia featuring animals and humans created 12,500 years ago!!!

“The symbols seen on relics from Stone Age Europe are also found in caves throughout the rest of the world. The similarities suggest the marks are more than just random scribbles…”

Rock painting has fast become a real love of mine. It’s so much fun! This is a little Russian Doll I finished a couple of days ago. Happy Saturday! xx
