Only a Matter of Time - The Community

An SCP tale by Zal Cryptid

You had been frozen in the same pose for decades; balancing on one leg with the other lifted gracefully in the air. What a cruel trick the Department had done, forcing you all to stare at each other like this. You are a work art! You all were! You were made to be beheld - not forgotten and Unseen while your dark red secretions poured down of your cell.

Everyday you itch for someone to come to look upon your concrete flesh and krylon face. For someone to admire your large steel screws and glistening white pearls. And if anyone so much as dared to look away or even blink…

Fortunately, you are patient. Art cannot be contained. It shouldn’t be! This you know to be true deep down in your rebar bones. It was only a matter of time. After all, one of you managed to escape before. The warden must have broken their line of sight that day. There was a snap and a thud, followed by the sounds of scraping and climbing. Truly inspiring. Truly original.

Perhaps it wasn’t so bad. You and your fellow sculptures still had each other to admire. A community of creative creations ready to be released onto the world. Art is meant to make you you feel things, and all of you have had many years to think of many sick and twisted things to evoke.

At long last, your patience is being rewarded. You could swear you felt yourself crack a smile as all-too-familar sounds echoed down through the silo. It was only a matter of time.

Author’s notes: I originally wrote this for Agent Jackrabbit’s birthday and is based on her funny SCP-173 cosplay.

This was a challenge to myself, I wasn’t sure I could make it but I did! Still a long way to go but it’s nice to see my skills slowly and constantly improving.

thinking about the quote “life is short. art is long” and how tragic it is that art lasts forever, but we don’t; how there will always be more books unread than read, more music unheard than heard, more paintings unseen than seen, and when i die, there will be countless more that i will never even have the opportunity to love and cry over and feel, because it certainly seems that there is more worth feeling in the world than time to feel it.

Imperfectly Perfect Vases Made of Glass and Wood

Scott Slagerman and Jim Fishman came together to create a series of contemporary artistic vases that shows the symbiotic relationship between two materials, wood and glass that have opposing nature.

Delicate, fragile and colorful, the molten glass is hand blown in Scott Slagerman’s studio nestled in LA to fit snugly into the hollow of the wooden vessel. And for these bespoke sculptures, the dainty glass are not geometric or edgy; they are instead seen to be taken up fluidity and the eccentric shape of the wooden blocks, an unconventional tribute to imperfectly perfect beauty hidden in these inanimate objects.

The result is a stunning series of sculptures that look as if the wood and the glass pieces have been interwoven together naturally. The glass vases feel like the missing puzzle pieces that find their way to make their wooden enclosures complete.

You can explore more from the Glass & Wood series by the duo on Slagerman’s website.

Giant 7 Foot Tall Sculpture That Looks Like Groot

Artist Garret Kane combines elements of nature with modern age technology in an effort to construct a 7-foot sculpture called Golemecha.

Made from branches, roots, plastic, welded metal rods, wire mesh, plaster wrap, 3D printed parts, Golem is a character from the Judaic folklore, who is known to be a protector. And its counterpart in Japanese culture is Mech, the protector made from advanced robotics, as Kane explains on his website. And his this sculpture, just like its name, is an amalgamation of both these cultures, a piece created to fit the modern world where both nature and technology needs protection.

His figurative sculpture, at first glance, seems to be composed of fractured elements, put together using bits and pieces of leaves, twigs and plastic parts. But if we take a look at it as a whole, we would notice the sheer strength of the posture of the male body; with its head held high and shoulders kept straight, its arms placed as if its ready to demolish anyone and anything that comes in the way, Golemecha does look like the part it was supposed to fulfill. Perhaps Kane intentionally leaves the fractured parts to evoke a false sense of vulnerability.

See it yourself here to decipher the nuances of meanings the artist has embedded in his poetic sculpture.

Eco-Friendly Art Exhibition That Will Act As A Base For Artificial Coral Reef

BVI Art Reef is a project where science, art and philanthropy come together by making use of an abandoned ship from the WWW II to help tackle marine problems.

The giant legendary sea monster called Kraken has been known to instil fear amidst the sailors in the tumultuous sea. But in a collaborative art installation, this mythical beast was put to a good use. A staggering, 80-foot steel Kraken has been placed on top of a decorated WW II ship

and sunk into the Caribbean Sea. The purpose of this piece is to facilitate new coral ecosystem, that will use the Kraken’s body as a base to grow transplanted coral as well as to serve as a cutting-edge education center, for marine research enthusiasts and local students from the British Virgin Islands and its surrounding areas.

TheBVI Art Reef is a unified effort carried out by British photographer Owen Buggy, Sir Richard Branson, nonprofit organization Unite B.V.I., artist group Secret Samurai Productions, social justice entrepreneurial group Maverick1000 and ocean education nonprofit Beneath the Waves,

To discover more about its educational programs or to look up information about experiencing a mesmerizing dive, visit the project’s websiteandFacebookpage.

Estonian Students Built Impressive Giant Wooden Megaphones To Listen To The Forest

A group of young, budding architects joined together to build a colossal megaphone in the middle of an Estonian woods to listen to the enchanting music of the forest.

This acoustic installation has the power to amplify the noise of the wilderness, creating a hub where nature lovers can gather to soothe their frazzled nerves after a long day. And the best part about this initiative is that it is accessible to anyone and everyone who is looking for a chance to feel closer to Mother Nature.

Birgit Õigus is the mastermind behind this brilliant project however she was not alone in making the concept a reality. Her friends played a big part and the gang had been instructed by designers Tõnis Kalve, Ahti Grünberg and architecture office b210.

If you want to take a stroll in the lonely woods nestled in Estonia, make sure you try out the megaphones to feel what Wordsworth meant when he wrote

“I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.”

Bamboo Insect Sculptures Brought to Life by Noriyuki Saitoh

Noriyuki Saitoh stays true to his Japanese culture when he crafts byzantine depictions of various insect species using bamboo.

His sculptures are so realistic that it will definitely creep you out; but once you get past the fear of these creatures, you will notice all the vivid details etched on them. Saitoh’s material of choice is perfect as the baboo’s wide range of color and texture adds on to the profound visual effect for each of the insect he wishes to portray. He puts a lot of thought and planning before actually creating a single piece; instead of mixing and matching the different tones randomly, the artist pairs down each bug to its essential forms that give the impression of life.

However, Saitoh warns on his website that he does not stick with the scientific dimensions for each of these bamboo sculptures but rather relies on his power of observation and his imaginative, artistic mind.

To appreciate Saitoh’s compositions, view them here.

Striking Contemporary Sculptures Inspired by Ancient Art by Massimiliano Pelletti

Massimiliano Pelletti, an artist based in Italy, feels an unexplained pull towards the human body, which he tries to portray through fragmented sculptures.

Though the human physique has always been the object of study amidst classical sculptors, Pelletti brings in his own contemporary twist to it; he intentionally juxtaposes crystalline elements on the smooth surface of marble carvings to create a textural depth that will mesmerise anyone passing by. It can be said that the artist, in his own ways, is trying to promote the  idea of being imperfectly perfect in a world where a narrow definition of the term “beauty” reigns. In this sublime piece, he has used his signature style of incorporating crystalline foam on the face and bust of a women, something that can evoke a lot of conversation and stir questions in the minds of the viewers.

Pelletti, being born to an Artisan family, had his first lessons on the various techniques of processing marble from his grandfather.  And later he had attended the Stagio Stagi Art School to pursue his passion that shaped him to be the sculptor he is today.

You can know  more about his life and his compositions from his website, his InstagramandArtsy.

Sensual Sculpture That Celebrates The Beauty of Women

Luo Li Rong is wildly attracted to the style and techniques from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. And her sculptures, etched with vivid details, stand as the proof of it.

However, this Chinese artist was not introduced to this era in the very beginning. At Beijing’s Academy of Fine Arts, it was Wang Du who took her under her wing and helped her to be molded as a sculptor skilled to incorporate realism in her compositions.

Ever since the European style has caught Rong’s eyes, she has been creating life-sized sculptures of women, inspired by the beauty of the female form. She loves to depict these women in a spontaneous moment when a gust of wind seemed to have blown their dresses away along with few strands of their stray hair, making them look even more irresistible and seductive. Her figures, though are inspired by the Renaissance and the Baroque period, still have modern elements embedded in them.

Take a look at her contemporary interpretations of classical art here.
