∆Witchy Reminder∆
Witchcraft is not always black and white, there are things that can go wrong and people or beings with ill intent, no matter what, always protect yourself. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
One with Nature (2020)
I sat down to work on the Hel prompt for #mythober and I had every intention of making her as fierce and downcast, and half blue (or half dead) as the author Snorri claimed she was or is, but here’s the deal, that’s not what happened. (And you can expect that if you try to focus on anything that belongs to Loki, things may go sideways rather quickly. That is the essence of chaos.) I am still hesitant to call this piece “Hel” but that truly was my intention when I started it. Death, in my opinion, is not the end, it is a transformation. It is an exchange from one form of energy to the next, a caterpillar into a butterfly, a tiny acorn into a massive oak tree. When I first intentionally sought out the Norse myths, I understood that the people who once followed, and are still drawn to follow these old gods are a people one or becoming one with nature. Their followers have no big cathedrals, no mega churches, they have no need. The forests, mountains, and the seas; nature is their church, always has been. There were and still are believed to be numerous places the spirits of the dead could end up, just as there are in life. I have interpreted Hel in my mind as a spiritual personification of the energy transformation that comes with death. In my mind, It’s her back that is the “dead“ half although it is very much alive in this piece. Her body is becoming a forest, her hair the rocks and he dress the river bed and snow. Hel is drawing part of you to herself, always to the mound and you can’t look away, you understand or will understand the eventuality of your life. Always moving forward, always transforming. Once on the other side of her you will understand that you can’t go back because you aren’t going that way, just as in life. This is just my interpretation, I’m still learning but have an enormous amount of respect for the followers of Norse paganism trying to piece everything back together. Skol!

King of the world….
BLACK SEA (September 24, 2020) – LT Timothy D. Grant, USN, watches the sun set from the starboard bridge wing aboard United States Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyerUSSRoosevelt (DDG 80).
If you ZOOM-IN on the photo above, you’ll notice the letters “OOD” on the back of his ballcap. That mean he is the Officer of the Deck. He’s in charge of the operation of the ship for the duration of his watch (4-6 hours)….and answers directly to the Commanding Officer (the Captain).

During my years as a warship OOD, the sunrise and sunset bridge watches were my favorites. When operational tempo permitted, it was always a spiritual experience to step out onto the bridge wing, like LT Grant above, and take in the wonders of Mother Nature – the sea, the sky, the fresh ocean air, the Sun – for a few moments.
Made me feel, if ever so briefly, like I was “King of the world”! And it also tended to keep me centered….in the enormity of it all out there.
The mighty steel warship humming and throbbing beneath my feet, as if alive, plowing a path through the mighty ocean….under my direction and control….the universe surrounding….headed for someplace really interesting….albeit very far from back home….on the other side of the planet….
….like in the photo up at the top of this post.

A card about isolation & worry as well as financial & spiritual loss. I was disheartened when I was assigned this, because I held similar feelings as far as my ability to produce artwork was going. I had been devoting most of my time & energy to my obligations in life, not taking care of myself or my art. But as I looked more at the card, despite the fact the figures were physically & emotionally damaged I felt hope that they could get out of their situation if they would have faith in themselves.

This took me back to my childhood. I was born in Nice, home to the first recorded Carnival (in 1294), and as a child, my late grandmother used to take care of my brother & I on Wednesdays, when school was off. She would take us to the Carnival, following the “Corso” of people cheering, dancing & throwing confetti. This is the atmosphere I tried to revive, where the King of Pentacles is King Carnival.

The World symbolizes achievement & completion, being at one’s rightful place in the order of things; typically represented as a women dancing in the heavens, surrounded by a wreath & four creatures. I decided to stay true to the traditional design, with a twist. The knife dancer on her wheel represents Earth, as evidenced by her map shawl, orbited by the Moon & at her perfect place amongst the stars & cosmos. She is wise, powerful & peaceful, in communion with her surroundings.

Artist interpretation:
The unicorn horn is the wand…the flowers falling from the clouds represent creative inspiration and the possibilities that we conceive in our mind becoming our reality. The butterflies represent new beginnings.
I filled the base with flowers and butterflies that are growing outwards, so the ideas start in the mind but become a reality once you take action, and grow from there.

I represent balance with a tightrope walker, in a rich outfit in sumptuous surroundings. The figure is young, representing confidence & joy in life that comes with a generous spirit. The balls are coins - material wealth, or as tools for the clown’s art, representing less tangible riches. The cats are both pathetic & cute - needy, but not totally destitute.
I love the message of this card and had a lot of fun designing it within the carnival theme. I wanted it to be theatrical, rich, and whimsical.

During a cloudy night, she found a scissorson the ground, and cut the wire near her eyes, the same that to tie the Eight Swords. Lady Baby Deer desperately wishing to be free, and in the heartedly of the escape, she destroy the mirror, and finally found the only truth, reflecting on the glass. She’s a monster. She’s alone. I’ve made a Venetian themed card. I wanted to stay true to the knight on a white horse, but give my own twist. The horse is white, to keep the “purity”, “Light ”& “spirituality”, but I made him a unicorn with armor to fit the knight. Red symbolises the romance of the card, as do roses. For the background I chose dusk scenery with golden colors, castle ruins in the back. I wanted the cup as a focal point, so he’s holding it up high.

My initial thoughts were of the elaborate dress & masks of the Venice Carnivale. My vision, for the Three of Pentacles was of dressmakers. Though only an apprentice, the young lady is entrusted with an elegant costume for an important client. Her mentors look on in approval as she adds finishing touches. I wanted to incorporate the zodiacal associations in the imagery. I’ve given the mentors fancy head-dress with bull & goat horns (Taurus & Capricorn), & the apprentice represents the maiden of Virgo.
