Okay but now I want a comic book superhero who to pay the bills does stock photo shoots. And then they get captured by a member of their rogue’s gallery who unmakes them a la that issue with Green Lantern in the Golden Age.

“I know them!” exclaims one of the henchmen. “They’re an account at Benedictine University!”

I would absolutely take one of those textbooks to him to have him sign at a convention or something.

Happy Fathers Day to a dad who makes us all proud. A father who knows how to take one for the team. We’re just glad that we’re not him! After courtship, the female deposits eggs in the male’s pouch, where they are fertilized, develop and hatch. The female seahorse deposits up to 1,500 eggs in the male’s ventral (front facing) pouch. The male carries the eggs for 9 to 45 days until the baby seahorses emerge fully developed, but very small. Once the young are released into the water, the male’s role is done and he offers no further care and often mates again within hours or days during the breeding season. Some may call you Mr. Mom but you’ll always be “Dear Old Dad” in our eyes.

Sea urchins’ spines aren’t the only sharp part of their prickly bodies. The sea creatures’ five razorlike teeth (above) are self-sharpening, and a new study suggests scientists may be able to harness this power to make cutting-edge tools that rarely require extra honing.

Sea urchins are well known for their ability to chomp through just about anything; they use their small, star-shaped mouths to crunch on brittle starfish, coral reefs, or even rocks. Scientists long suspected the urchins’ ceramic teeth sharpened themselves, but no one could figure out exactly how they did it.

To find out, researchers used scanning electron microscopy to film the teeth of pink sea urchins as they ground against a superhard material made of diamonds. 

After analyzing 3D movies of exactly how and where the teeth chipped, and conducting multiple mechanical tests, the team found that materials in the teeth are arranged so that they chip only on one side. That helps them maintain a sharp edge all around, they report today in the journal Matter.

Ublester Rodriguez could not have anticipated that his life would be profoundly changed by kitchen and bathroom countertops.

He says that he grew up poor, in a small Mexican town, and came to the United States when he was 14. He spoke no English, but he immediately got a job.

“In the beginning I was working in a Chinese restaurant, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It was all day, so I never had time to go to school,” he recalls. “I was a dishwasher.”

He labored in restaurant kitchens for about eight years. But he wanted Sundays off to go to church and play soccer. So when his brother-in-law offered to help him get a new job, he jumped at the chance.

That’s how he ended up in a workshop that cuts and polishes slabs of an artificial stone to make kitchen and bathroom countertops.

“It was something totally different for me,” says Rodriguez.

Back then, in 2000, the material he was cutting was also something totally different for the American countertop industry. The stuff looked a lot like natural granite. In reality, it was made in a factory, from bits of quartz bound together by a resin.

Here it has formed inside a blood vessel following an injury. Red blood cells (a.k.a. erythrocytes) are seen trapped by a web of brown fibrin threads. The fibrin is an insoluble protein and these threads are an essential mechanism for the arrest of bleeding.

Platelets (a.k.a. thrombocytes) are a component of blood whose function (along with the coagulation factors) is to react to bleeding from blood vessel injury by clumping, thereby initiating a blood clot.

As the blood cells become trapped they lose their normal rounded shape (as at upper left). Blood clots form to repair blood vessels damaged by injury or disease. 

Abnormal clotting in intact arteries and veins (as occurs in a thrombus) is the principal cause of heart attack and stroke.

On the other side of the coin, there is a bleeding disorder called, Hemophilia, where the blood does not clot properly. This can lead to spontaneous bleeding as well as bleeding following injuries or surgery.

This year saw the largest outbreak of measles in the U.S. since 1994, with 1,250 cases reported as of Oct. 3, largely driven by families choosing not to vaccinate their kids. Worldwide, the disease has resurfaced in areas that had been declared measles-free.

Some families choosing not to vaccinate argue that measles is just a pesky childhood illness to be endured. But two new studies illustrate how skipping the measles vaccine carries a double risk. Not only does it leave a child vulnerable to a highly contagious disease, but also, for individuals who survive an initial measles attack, the virus increases their vulnerability to all kinds of other infections for months, possibly even years, after they recover.

The research begins to explain something surprising that happened when the measles vaccine was introduced in the U.S. in the 1960s. Rates of childhood deaths from other diseases fell precipitously. The same thing happened as the vaccine was introduced around the world.

But what is it about the measles vaccine that seems to provide protection from more than just measles? The new studies published this week in the journals Science and Science Immunology provide substance to what has been the leading theory: Measles can damage the immune system by erasing the body’s memory of previously encountered antigens.

The Inca civilization of Peru, as with many other ancient Andean cultures, mummified many of their dead and buried them with valuable materials such as precious metal jewellery, fine pottery, and sumptuous textiles. Important mummies could also be periodically removed from their tombs to participate in ceremonies where they were also offered food as if they were still living persons. Those mummies (mallki) which escaped looters have, in most cases, been excellently preserved, thanks to the dry climate of the Andes region, and they provide a unique insight into the culture, religious practices, and everyday life of the Incas.

Mummification was only one type of burial employed by the Incas and was an ancient Andean manifestation of ancestor worship which illustrates a deep reverence for older generations (ayllu) and kinship within communities. Considered a link between the living and the gods, these mummies could also be taken from their resting place and ‘consulted’ on important occasions so that their knowledge might serve the living community. Given places of honour and offered food and drink, mummies were involved in such ceremonies as marriages, sowing, and harvesting, or when long journeys had to be undertaken by individuals within the community.

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped mucosal sac that serves as a reservoir for the bile fluid produced in the liver. Bile is released into the stomach after ingestion, where it plays an important role in the digestion of fats. 

The bile emulsifies fats in partly digested food, thereby assisting their absorption. Bile consists primarily of water and bile salts, and also acts as a means of eliminating bilirubin, a product of hemoglobin metabolism, from the body.

Medicines and other “waste products” filtered out by the liver are also contained in the bile and are excreted in this way. 

The gallbladder can be affected by gallstones, formed by material that cannot be dissolved, usually cholesterol or bilirubin. These may cause significant pain, particularly in the upper-right corner of the abdomen.
