One way to easily create scale is through the depth of your shadows. The deeper the relief, the bigger your architecture will feel. A fun story- Years ago, while designing the lighting for “Prince of Egypt”, I painted a shot of the Palace, and from the upper right corner of the facade, I cast a diagonal shadow, which led your eye to the main door where baby Moses, jn his basket, enters the shot, floating toward the queen who stood just inside the huge portal- I was questioned about the shadow’s source. The issue was I painted a clear sky- no clouds to cast the shadow! “I replied, there’s a grip just off camera holding up a flag which was creating the necessary shadow which helped focus our eyes upon the gate where Moses enters. “Oh, ok, that makes sense”! Lol- it’s an animated film! I just wanted to make it look good. I like to design the light to “feel” real, but not actually real! And I guess I still like long diagonal shadows, with deep relief!

Fort Foul Luck – Castle Battle Map

This is ‘Fort Foul Luck,’ my new 44x32 battle map! You can download the full-size version for free on the other side of the link below. So GM, what gives it its ominous name?

Find it on 2-Minute Tabletop

A stone fort erected on the wild frontier, advancing civilization one more determined step outwards…

This 44×32 map is inspired by the time I spent with Elden Ring and my fascination with its level design. My goal was to play with the same non-linear and elevation-mixing ideas and create a similar sort of place on a battle map scale. This foggy keep was the result!

Of course, castles are also useful as home bases, defensive encounters, and miniature towns! I’d love to hear what Fort Foul Luck becomes in your campaign setting, so please share your story if you put it to use.

Have fun!

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” - Psalm 18:2

David was known to be a man after own God’s heart, with our verse today, we will understand his relationship with God. He described God in a lot of ways which shows how deep was his relationship with God. Now, we all know that David was a fighter, and with his description of God, we can see that he was a fighter, and in every battle he faced, he fought with God. He declared that the Lord our God is his rock, his fortress, and his deliverer. So, we know that whenever he fought his battles, he saw God as his shield, as his victory, as his refuge, as his strength, and even as his stronghold when times are awful.

Aso, as we reflect on this verse,  we will then realize that we ought to be like David. We must be like David who sees God as his everything. We should not just see God as our God of convenience. We should not just approach God or acknowledge Him when we need Him, or when it is our convenient time to approach Him. Instead, we must see God as our God and Lord of our lives. So, we must not just approach Him when we need Him or when we have time to remember Him. We must always see Him as our God who is always there for us, and we must always depend on Him.

Therefore, we should always keep in mind that as children of God, we depend on Him. We must not try to be so independent because we know that we are nothing without Him. Let us always understand that everything we do, we must always do it for the glory of God. As we fight everyday’s battle, let’s fight it with God. May we always be like David who is a man after own God’s heart. We must always remember to make Him as our rock, our fortress, our strength for we need Him, and indeed we get our strength from Him. Thus, let us always depend on God and get the strength that we need from Him.

Part 6/6 - The Kingdom of Florin

      Part 1 - The Family|2 - Style|3 - The Sicilian Assassins|4 - Buttercup and Westley|5 - The Prince and the Count

The seat of power for the Kingdom of Florin is a Military Fortress built on top of a seaside cliff.

Instead of elegant Gothic spires which was popular during the 15th and 16th century, Florin Castle is a bulky and imposing fortress reflecting the Military nature of the country, its simple people, Buttercup’s prison-like experience, and its ruler — Prince Humperdinck.

One of the challenges I encountered for the castle design was keeping the colours saturated enough to match the palette of the project while keeping the emotional geography of “prison” in tact. Although a violet palette was explored, the red brick that is common in Northern European architecture gave a more militaristic no frills impression that is more in line with the Kingdom and its Prince.

After many sketches, I realised that a country celebrating its 500th anniversary would probably have a castle built far before the current century. So incorporating a bulkier Romanesque style Keep as the castle’s foundation is what finally made things come together and give it a solid direction. Since Florin is a Militaristic state, it would make sense for them to continually be making Military advances, so one of the Castle’s most recent evolution/natural progression is a towards a very early prototype of a Bastion Fort. This makes Florin castle the most advanced, secure, and fortified structures in the land while upping the stakes for the infiltration during the near end of the series.

Fun Fact! While looking for references of Danish Castles, I came across an old map of Kronborg Castle. (Just google “old map of Kronborg castle”, you’ll see it right away) I thought it looked super familiar and I realised that it actually looked very similar to the layout of the Map of Florin and Guilder! So I included the bonus map I was required to submit.
