So I was playing Symphony of the Night and I stumbled upon the “Sunglasses” gear and after I read the description, I could only visualize Alucard like this in my head.

Anyone with decent kanji skills wanna take a stab at this interview with Koji Igarashi about Tokimek

Anyone with decent kanji skills wanna take a stab at this interview with Koji Igarashi about Tokimeki Memorial? Apparently he was a scenario writer and programmer on the dating sim before moving over to the Castlevania team and working on SotN.

Also dig the Castlevania-style IGA stats box. I’m guessing he dislikes bugs and likes ramen, but I’m not sure what his drop item “saif”(?) is.

KANEKO’S CRIB NOTES LIV: DAVID’S HALLOWEEN GHOUL-A-GANZA + CASTLEVANIA…!?!

Thanks to matteste for this one! Originally spotted on the cover of the Swedish book Sällsamheter i Bohuslän och Dalsland, we were able to trace this death image’s presence to none other than the Dictionnaire Infernal (though not its actual origins; we’ll get into that). Featured in the dictionary’s entry for the “dance of death” (danse des morts), this skeletal musician looks as if it is delighting in fiddling away some macabre tune. Kaneko’s David adapts exactly the posture of raised left leg, the placement of the violin on the left shoulder, and especially the feathered beret.

A perplexing issue is the exact provenance of the Dictionnaire’s "David.” Louis Le Breton is famously credited for the book’s demon illustrations, but the skeleton violinist is unattributed; moreover, it just doesn’t look like it is in Le Breton’s style. No other artist is officially credited in the Dictionnaire, but a couple of the other illustrations in the “dance of death” entry are signed by that of Jean-Baptiste Victor Loutrel and E. Kretzschmar; we can find no confirmation that the work is theirs. It would also be tempting to credit Hans Holbein the Younger and his own Dance of Death woodcut series, but the illustration isn’t present there, either. Even more puzzling is the colorized version as seen on the Swedish book, as its crimson hue is an uncanny match for Kaneko’s Fiend–so where exactly did he see this? Certainly not on this book’s cover, unless he’s been a secret Suecophile all along! Unfortunately, all of these questions must remain unanswered for the time being.

While obviously meant to evoke the Danse Macabre of his Dictionnaire heritage, the appellation “David” is another matter altogether. Luckily avoiding confusion with the later Macabre, David’s likely namesake is instead one of the creations of the legendary Antonio Stradivari: the violinDavidoff Stradivarius, as evidenced by the weapon left behind following his defeat in the original SMT (’Stradivari”). Otherwise, looking for any connection between the name David and the genuine Danse Macabre tradition turned out to be a fool’s errand.

Lastly, since October is the month when we reflect on the dead, it’s the perfect time to include some Castlevania! Morbid, but you know it’s true. Anyway, while browsing the Dictionnaire Infernal we happened upon its entry for Amalaric, the Visigoth king, and found the general silhouette of his sniper assassin to be curiously familiar in both pose and the degree of the bow’s tilt to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night’sSniper of Goth(orAmalaric Sniper). While its angelic embellishments define the sprite, we figure this illustration has to be the inspiration for it as it’s such a bizarrely specific enemy otherwise!

I’m thinking of Alucard and his different looks. So, I decided to compile a bunch of pictures of him and we’re pulling a Belt-monts again.

I’m not… including the Netflix show.

Castlevania Legends

Did y’all know he had purple hair in Legends? No one informed me of this. Does this mean that’s his natural hair colour? Or perhaps a disguise is more likely? (I joke that he was going through a crisis and dyed his hair). Either way, I love him. And I feel this could tie into Castlevania 64 where Dracula was purple as well! I’d like to see this and the Dracula’s Curse design in a style more akin to Kojima’s, that’d be neat.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse

And I understand that they wanted a recognizable design for the show (they didn’t succeed doing that with the MAIN CHARACTER TREVOR BUT WHATEVER), but Alucard looked like this in Dracula’s Curse. Another new look for him, guess he had to keep it on the DL that he dated Trevor’s mom in high school, and this was his solution. I have a soft spot for him looking more movie-Dracula-esqe. This is his BAD BOY PHASE!!

image

Too many for my lazy ass to name

Here’s the boy we all know and love. I love when they make his hair almost like,,, white gold in colour. Just so silvery you can hardly call it blond. Hhhh, just look at my perfect boy.

Aria/Dawn of Sorrow/Grimoire of Souls

Genya Arikado <333 What can I even say? I love him? I want to run my fingers through his hair. It’s different than with normal Alucard tho. I think it’s because Arikado is his human form, so he looks more human, so my brain is like “this is a real person we could pet”.

Honourable Mentions:

Lords of Shadow

My baby boy. Have I ever talked about how much I love Trevor in the Lords of Shadow timeline? He’s my baby. I love that we got that deep lore that his less human pallor and white hair are a product of him refusing to drink blood. Also, I love the Belmont family tradition in LoS to bare the chest.

image

Castlevania Judgement

Judgement Alucard… doesn’t even look like an Alucard… he just looks like an edgy anime boy. But can’t the same be said of all the designs in Judgement? Honestly looks more like Joachim Armster. Why the fuck is his cape a quilt…? Whatever. If this were a design for Joachim, I wouldn’t dislike it this much.

image

Pachislot Akumajō Dracula

They did my boy dirty (blond) in Pachislot. No, but really, it’s interesting to see Alucard with dirty blond hair instead of platinum. He kinda lacks that… Alucard essence… I think it’s the modelling on the face, maybe?

image

Concept Design??

I found this on the wiki. I believe this was perhaps a rough draft? He looks cute, ngl. I love his wavy hair and his boots!! It kinda looks… like he’s wearing short shorts… and I love that…

image

Belmont? More like Belt-mont

So, when I was still drawing Vampire Leon, I had the thought that I just love that nearly all the Belmonts have a belt where there shouldn’t be a belt and not many of them wear real belts around the waist.

I’m not gonna cover every design of the characters, that would kill me, but like… look at all these Belmonts.

Leon:

belt around coat and belt around thigh, the starter of the trend. the belt around the coat is not doing anything that metal girdle isn’t already

image

Sonia:

belt around coat and white choker around neck, I’m counting this as a belt. I guess her belt is keeping her coat closed this time at the very least?

image

Trevor:

belt across chest and belt around?? elbow?? also,,, could count those lil knife sheaths on his boot belts,,, also if you just glance closer and look at the chain connected to his belt that circles around his thigh,,, hot,,, but also really weird

image

Christopher:

belt around waist and something around his bicep, probably a fucking belt or bandages- does the thing around his head count as a belt? I dunno??

image

Soleil:

okay, i gotta give it to him, he’s wearing a belt where you’re supposed to, but it’s around his tunic for that aesthetic (and maybe to hold weapons)

image

Simon:

GIANT belt around waist but also belt around bicep and belt around neck??kinky

(what the fuck even are those things hanging from his leather corset?? they look like they’d whip around and hurt his legs?? masochist??)

image

Juste:

belt around waist and BELT AROUND LEG- WHY DO YOU GUYS NEED LEG BELTS?? FOR WHAT PURPOSE??

side note: I’m just now realizing how similar Leon and Juste’s designs are… they have a lot of similar design elements

image

Richter:

TWO BELTS!! TWO BELTS AROUND WAIST!!! THEY AREn’T EVEN HOLDING YOUR PANTS UP, DEAR

(don’t even mention what the fuck is happening with the belt situation in RoB/DXC I don’t wanna think about it)

image

now the question is do I talk about LoS Victor or concept Victor… eh, different timeline

Victor:

wow that’s just a regular ol’ belt around the waist. it seems that vampire hunting is not the only thing he rejected about his family legacy. technically the sheath around the leg could be considered a leg belt

image

Reinhardt:

studded belts around waist and wrists??? and BELT HANGING OFF WAIST, he looked at his Grandpa Richter’s clothes and said “but how do I give it more rebellious teen energy?” Ya know, at twenty-five

image

Julius:

no belt?? nobelt??SACRiLEGE??but it’s okay, stylish neckerchief instead

Maybe Julius has a secret belt hidden from prying eyes. Maybe he’s just wearing high-waisted pants, and if he took off his waistcoat you’d see belt.

Why am I thirsting over the possibility of a belt I’ll never get to see?

With the recent Smash Bros Direct, Castlevania caught my eye for the first time.

Though, it wasn’t the Belmont’s who got my attention. Rather it was Alucard’s brief appearance as an assist trophy that caught my eye. His design is right up my alley and his introduction as The Son of Dracula seemed like he had an interesting story.

So I watched the anime last weekend, and I just finished playing Symphony of the Night and I loved it! Alucard is such a cool character just as I thought! I especially love his transformation abilities! ☁️

paying homage to my favourite video

[Id: a digital lineless drawing of Alucard from Castlevania Symphony of the Night. The color palette is made up of beiges and browns, dark navy for Alucard’s coat, the brim of the bowl in front of him, and the large dish off to the left. The dish has many types of food on it, which is steaming. The background is the walls of a restaurant, with a few other tables in the back and on the left.

Alucard is on the right, sitting at a table and facing the viewer. He is holding a set of chopsticks in his right hand, which are picking up what is presumed to be a dumpling. His left hand is slightly tilting a bowl of sauce torwards his right, and is going to dip the dumpling in. Alucard is looking at this with a flat expression. Above him is written text that he says: “God I hate my dad.” End Id]
