Stronger, lighter, cheaper materials are the name of the game in advanced manufacturing. Keeping costs down on materials that are equally, if not more, effective than previous ones is how businesses get ahead—and, theoretically, when consumers win.
But what if stronger, lighter and cheaper means shorter lifetimes for materials used in automobiles? That’s the problem an international research team led by Western materials engineer Hamidreza Abdolvand tackled in a new study published by high-impact journals Acta Materialia and Communications Materials.
Abdolvand, along with Western Engineering graduate student Karim Louca and collaborators at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and Arts et Métiers ParisTech, discovered important factors contributing to the deformation (changing shape) of metals used in automobiles and nuclear reactors, and developed new models to predict the lifetimes of these materials.

The goal this weekend is to make photos celebrating pairs that mirror one another — in obvious or subtle ways.
Here’s how to get started:
Keep an eye out for lookalike couples, and think outside the box. Seek out people that match their surroundings, a dog and owner with a similar expression or best friends dressing alike on purpose.
While a couple’s similarities may initially catch your eye, also highlight how each is unique.
Compose your frame in a way that allows you to compare your two subjects. Eliminate distracting details that would take away from the emphasis on your dynamic duo.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPseeingdouble hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Gorgeous @vixen_lingerie put together this image of us twinning in @silklaundry’s fabulous silk teddy! For ages I didn’t realise @lingerieofthemonth’s “Twinning” concept was about looking or posing the same, the symmetry is wonderful when someone can make images that match beautifully like this but what I actually really enjoy about the theme is seeing the same garments or sets on different bodies. My curves absolutely pale in comparison to this gorgeous woman’s, yet look; here we are, in the same garment, both wearing it well. This is something that I think really speaks to the quality, design and cut of the piece (really nice work @silklaundry!) but also to our preconceived ideas of how something “should” look. I know I’ve often times been duped seeing something in a catalogue/webstore/magazine on a model ~roughly~ my size and thinking “ooooh that’d fit me!” Only to be bitterly disappointed when the item shows up and is miles too big/too long/sits funny/gapes/gathers or falls off because it’s just not made to suit anything outside of the ‘standard’ body proportions. So this is just a friendly PSA to say, you don’t have to be a leggy 5'9 and a stock standard size 8 for things to fit you, or even look good on you. Explore brands and garment/fabric types that work best for you!
