Hello and welcome to my first whumpy book list! I am a huge fan of books and I think they are even better when there is whump in them.
The books in this list are all ones that I have read and enjoyed. I have tried to include some of the whump tropes found in these books, but it has been a while since I read some of them and I can’t remember everything that happened in each book. If you can think of any tropes that I missed for any of these books, please let me know and I will add them.
I am also going to include a summary of the books (taken from goodreads) so this list post will get long.

Magic’s Pawn (Valdemar: The Last Herald-Mage #1) by Mercedes Lackey
Note:This is the first book in a trilogy, but I have only read the first one.

Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Note:I adore these books. I know that there are more whump tropes in these books, but I can’t think of them at the moment. Also, V.E. Schwab is the sweetest person and you should go read all of her books.
The Ruin of Kings (A Chorus of Dragons #1) by Jenn Lyons
Note:The main character of this book is 15 when the book starts (and I can’t remember how much time passes over the span of these books).
Summary: “Kihrin is a bastard orphan who grew up on storybook tales of long-lost princes and grand quests. When he is claimed against his will as the long-lost son of a treasonous prince, Kihrin finds that being a long-lost prince isn’t what the storybooks promised.

Cupid’s Last Wish is a 2022 Thai bl, adventure, body-switching drama. When Win’s father dies, his will divides up the shares of the family farm to four people including Win’s long-time friend, Korn. This causes conflict when Win becomes suspicious of Korn and how he ended up with a portion of the farm. Win’s anger causes him to be in a car accident with his sister. He wakes up in her body and is told he must get holy water from four temples in seven days to return to his body. Korn accompanies Win on this adventure and their true feelings come to light.

Cross Fire is a 2020 Chinese action, sci-fi, e-sports drama. It follows two rising e-sports players, one living in 2008 and the other in 2019, as they try to build teams and win their respective gaming tournaments. A cosmic glitch (MDL’s words) allows these two to communicate over time and space. The two build a friendship and help each other face their own problems. The show also has an underlying mystery.
I thought this show was very well done. And for a show that has e-sports at the center, it feels very high-stakes.
Where to watch: You’re gonna have to search for it. It is a bit challenging to find high-quality and good subs.

(End summary: He keeps struggling with his vision for a bit but he does get it back and recovers, not much good whump after this point)
Go Nan Gil deals with extreme guilt about something he did in his sketchy past. That seems to be the cause of his episodes which he says are not a health condition but are more like panic attacks. He starts getting better towards the end. **Note: the romance storyline is weird and I personally just watched for the whump.

Episode 7: (44:00) Suddenly gets dizzy while walking, having an episode, stumbling. Sweating, looks like he’s struggling to stay conscious, vision distorted. Swaying in the road.
Episode 8: (37:00) Girl brings up his obvious health problems.
Episode 11: (27:00) Sick and feverish after having to work outside in the rain, they say he’s been sick for 2 days. (31:00) Girl tends to him while he’s sick.
Episode 13: (4:00) Fighting, bottle smashed over his head. (9:00) Head bloody, stumbling around the street in a daze. Collapses and gets sent to hospital. (12:00) Ambulance. (18:00) Wakes up in hospital. Later he tries to isolate himself to hide his wounds from the girl.
De-you (left) works with his friend to investigate crimes. He seems somewhat psychic and sees clues in his mind that are not visible in regular life, he uses smoke to trigger this. It is part of his character that he is very sensitive to certain things which is why smoke has such a strong effect on him. List also refers to the other male lead (right). They both work with the police.

Episode 7:(13:00) Enters opium den which does not take long to mess him up, he gets dizzy and disoriented, coughing, he sits down as soon as possible. Is unresponsive for a minute. Forced to run away when he can barely stand, friends help him walk. Out of it. This continues until after they’ve left the opium den.
Episode 8: (23:00) Other male lead is drugged and falls asleep.
Episode 12: (22:00) In an explosion, blocked by rubble. His friend gets stabbed, under a lot of pressure to save him. Breathes in smoke to hallucinate, dizzy.
Episode 15: (3:00) Other male lead gets strangely affected by some flowers. All the characters hallucinate.
Episode 20: (9:00) Attacked, strangled.
Episode 21: (34:00) Other male lead hypnotizes himself, hallucinates, and falls asleep.

Whumpee - Shen Fang played by Zhang Yi Shan.
Shen Fang is a communist spy, he and his older brother work with the government. An explosion leaves a piece of shrapnel in his head that causes the majority of the whump in the show, usually with extreme head pain that can lead to collapsing.
Episode 17:(18:00) Starts to look dazed, someone mentions he looks pale. (23:00) Headache, has to work through the pain. Fighting it for as long as possible. Sweating, struggling to walk down stairs, collapses. (29:00) Wakes up in the hospital.
Episode 22:(20:00) Taken hostage, discovered he’s a spy. Hit over the head really hard, bleeding. Gun against head. It’s concerning because of the shrapnel in his brain. Knocked down and helped up, refuses help. Almost collapses again, helped to car, asleep in the backseat. (31:00) Leaning on his wife for comfort which is out of character for him. (35:00) Walks into surprise party with his gun ready, not knowing it’s a surprise party.
Episode 27:(16:00) Collapses with sudden extreme head pain. He falls down and passes out from the pain. (18:00) Forces himself to continue working without recovering. (26:00) Saved by someone in an explosion.
Episode 28: (6:00) Stunned after seeing his friend die. (14:00) Drinking at a club. (18:00) Drunk, almost falls down. (21:00) Fell asleep while talking to his brother. (27:00) Vomiting because he drank too much.

Go Nan Gil deals with extreme guilt about something he did in his sketchy past. That seems to be the cause of his episodes which he says are not a health condition but are more like panic attacks. He starts getting better towards the end. **Note: the romance storyline is weird and I personally just watched for the whump.

This next one is long (48 episodes). The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty is a 2020 Chinese historical, crime, and mystery drama (available to watch on Viki). This drama was adapted from a BL (boylove) novel, but because of censorship, it is a bromance between the two main characters (the whumpees in this list).
I was originally only working on one whumpee for this drama but recent posts in the whump community convinced me to add a second.

Whumpee: 고도영 (Go Do Young) played by 차학연 (Cha Hak Yeon)
Synopsis: The public questions the definition of punishing a criminal who broadcasts seven murders live on the Internet through the new punishment system, the Virtual Crime Program (VCP).
a warning: this manga is pretty dang gory, but the whump for denji (pictured above) is off the charts. plus, it’s getting an anime soon, which means there will be audio for all the whumpy goodness!
Synopsis: A blind woman and a young adult are witness to a crime. Unfortunately for them, the perpetrator wants them silenced and he’s willing to go to great lengths to do so.
When the whumpee is physically hurt and/or exhausted and he feels he’s fainting and needs to seek some support, better if a piece of furniture or a wall. In this trope, the whumpee is usually or preferably alone.
