Today marks my final day at my Junior High School and thus my final day eating school lunch. It’s been quite a fun three years here in Japan. School lunches have opened me up to a lot of foods I would have never thought to experience (whole smelt).

Today was egg and chicken in a soupy bowl. Katsuo rice. Finally a salad of pickled cucumber and bean sprouts. Also a frozen mikan for dessert.

I’ll miss Japanese school lunches so much!

Pretty good lunch on wednesday. Salmon (with a few bones) a nice wilted pickled salad. A very hearty miso soup with lots of tofu. A slice of frozen pineapple for dessert. The rice was ‘seikhan’, or red bean rice. Sticky and delicious.

Not the greatest lunch but it was okay. The cucumber salad definitely had some sesame oil in it which made it delicious! The donburi bowl of pork and bamboo was also pretty good. We had white rice and then a snack of dried beans.

And also a disgusting mini tomato.

Delicious lunch and it wasn’t even a request lunch day! Karaage, a delicious bonito and cabbage salad. There was white rice and a nice healthy bowl of kinpira gobo!

Delicious school lunch. Sesame chicken, a tomato soup that I would call “hamburger soup”. A side salad and barley rice.

06.02.2020

Not the greatest lunch. Can’t stand green pepper salad. Didn’t eat it. The fried fish was good though and also there was harusame. That was good.

School started again. Not a good decision and schools are set to close from Monday again. However, for some bizarre reason, school continued for the remainder of the week.

Today’s lunch was white rice, a salad of wilted cucumber and daikon radish with little fishes. Finally buta-don (pork and vegetables eaten over rice). An orange for dessert.

8/3/21 ~ Growing my own bean sprouts with Mung Beans again. I feel like I posted this on here once? But can’t remember . I think I’m going to try and grow actual Mung Bean Plants next year .

From my 10-minute Japanese recipe book, I present to you one of the easiest and cheapest soups ever.

From my 10-minute Japanese recipe book, I present to you one of the easiest and cheapest soups ever.

Curried Tuna and Bean Sprout Soup

100g bean sprouts

1 can of tuna

1 tsp curry powder

1 tsp soy sauce

salad oil, water, salt and pepper

Saute bean sprouts in oil, then add 1 tsp of curry powder and two cups of water. Bring to boil, then turn heat down to low. Add 1 can of tuna, and cook for 1-2 minutes. Finally, add 1 tsp of soy sauce and salt and pepper to taste. Done.

It’s nothing amazing, but it tastes fine, works as a side dish, and did I mention CHEAP and EASY?
