CHAPTER UPDATE:44 || DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY

… “Shit,” Aurelia mumbles, glancing at her three friends “Do you think —”

“Smith,” Olivia says darkly, cutting off Aurelia’s question but still answering it as though she had known exactly what Aurelia was about to ask.

“It wasn’t me,” Zacharias mutters from behind them, “I’m not that much of a little bitch.”

The four girls turn on him, giving him dirty looks.

“That’s debatable,” Aurelia says, narrowing her dark eyes at him as she crosses her arms over her chest.

“Well,” Hannah mutters under her breath, “At least he’s self-aware.”

“Are you nervous?” Amelia whispered.

I shook her off. “No of course not. I have looking forward to this for days”

It was the only thing keeping me going really. The first week of being at Hogwarts was exactly how I thought it would be. Everybody whispering when I walked down the halls. When I sat down on the couch in the common rooms everyone got up and left. Martell throwing notes at the back of my head with little images of me getting my head chopped off.

Exactly like last year.

I gripped my broom handle to steady myself. It was a Firebolt Supreme. It wasn’t the newest model of broom or anything but it wasn’t anything to laugh about either. It was a present from my father before school started. Ever since my brother vanished our house had been solemn. My mother stayed locked up in her room most days and my father stared longingly out a window. He got the broom for my birthday in an effort to cheer us up.

“Everyone is staring at you.” Amelia pointed out.

“Yeah they always stare at me.” I shrugged.

“I don’t know instead of in horror they are kind of staring at you in awe.” She said.

I pulled my hair back into a tight ponytail. “I have a cool broom.”

“Okay you totally got this.” She said mostly to herself. “Just go out there and do what you do.”

The captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team blew his whistle. I was about to get up when my broom was snatched out of my hand.

“Awe where did you get this! Did daddy buy it for you with all the money he got from his death eater days. Oh don’t tell me, you’re part Malfoy aren’t you.” Martell laughed twirling the broom in his hands.

I got up. “Martell you know I’m not a Malfoy and even if I was there is nothing wrong with them. They made bad choices but they also helped us win the war.”

“Who is this us you are referring to? Wasn’t your family on the losing side?” He taunted.

I snatched the broom back so fast he didn’t have time to blink. “Get lost Martell this is a Slytherin tryout. Gryffindors aren’t welcome.”

He looked behind me at Amelia. “But Hufflepuffs are?”

“Anyone but you is allowed.” I snarled stepping to get into his face.

The whistle blew again. “Drago stop flirting with the enemy and get over here!”

Both our faces grew hot and we backed away from each other. I hopped on my broom and flew down to the pitch not even daring to look at Martell behind me.

I landed swiftly on the grass with the rest of the group. It was a mixture of some new faces and then the team from last year. They graduated their two best chasers last year. I was hoping to take up one of those spots.

“Alright here is the deal.” The captain, Nate Fox, said. “We are going to be taking fourteen players this year. As you know there are seven starting positions. Three chasers, two beaters, a seeker, and a keeper. Last year we faced a devastating loss to Gryffindor for the final. That will not be happening again. That is why everyone is cut from the team. Just because you were on the team last year does not mean I will pick you again.”

There were some grumbles from the crowd but no outcries. If there was one thing Slytherin’s wanted to do that was to win.

“Now there are thirty of you here so that means 16 of you aren’t going to make the cut. And even if I pick you after today if I don’t think you have what it takes I will cut you from the team. Are we clear?”

We all nodded.

“Good now let’s take to the air.”

“This year is going to be different,” I said, straightening my tie around my collar.

“How so?” She asked.

“This year is the first year I can try out for the quidditch team,” I said. “We are going to go to more parties and finally stop being losers.”

She rolled her eyes. “Sure, Wrenna, somehow magically, we are going to become popular and cool because you might make the quidditch team.”

“Hey, we’re wizards.” I smiled. “Magically doing stuff is the whole reason we are attending Hogwarts.”

The train’s whistle blew, signaling we were almost there. I had been dreaming about going to Hogwarts ever since I was a kid. I would wear my mom’s old robes and run around the house pretending I was exploring the school’s halls. Last year when I finally got here, things didn’t exactly go as planned. I was sorted into Slytherin, which was to be expected. My mom had been a Slytherin, as was my brother. But after what happened with my brother when he was here… I didn’t exactly get a warm welcome. When I met Amelia, a Hufflepuff, I was surprised she had even talked to me. But, that didn’t help her social standings either. We quickly became outcasts.

Amelia pulled on her black robe and clipped on her yellow and black tie. Her long blonde hair was pulled up into a high ponytail. Our first year, she was a little chubby in the face, but over the summer, it thinned out, exposing her beautifully sharp cheekbones and honey brown eyes. I could see her being popular if I wasn’t her best friend.

I glanced at the window through the reflection. I could see my long brown hair that laid carelessly over one shoulder. I had gotten taller and curvier over the summer. My sun kissed skin was clear for once. My two dark green eyes stared back at me, my face etched with worry. I was putting on a brave face for Amelia. Sure, I could try out for the quidditch team, but there was no guaranteed spot. My brother used to always say I was good. Good enough to make it as a first-year. But no first year had gotten a spot since Harry Potter.

The train finally rolled to a stop, and the whole train car began murmuring with excitement. I grabbed my bag and followed Amelia out of our cabin. I saw familiar faces in the crowd, but none offered me a smile or a wave. Which was typical. First years mingled around the hallway, awkward and not sure what to do.

“Excuse me.” One tapped me on the shoulder.

She had wild red hair, and her face was peppered with freckles. “Do you know where we are supposed to meet the boats to take us across the lake?”

Before I could answer, I was shoved from behind, my shoulder hitting the window roughly.

“I wouldn’t talk to her.” An annoyingly familiar voice laughed. “She’s a Drago.”

Martell was a third-year Gryffindor student who tended to pick on me rather than ignore me like everyone else. His dark brown hair curled just above his shoulders. His dark brown eyes promised vengeance in the light. His thin lips were curled into a smirk. He would have been cute if he wasn’t such a jerk all the time.

“A what?” The girl asked.

“Haven’t you heard? Her older brother released a curse upon the school and got himself killed in the process three years ago.” He said.

“Shut up, Martell.” Amelia rose to my defense.

“And look, little Amelia always defending the snake,” Martell said, and his friends laughed.

“Come on,” He slid past me, making sure not to touch me, and ushered the girl down the car. “I’ll show you where to go.”

His friends followed after him leaving Amelia and me alone in the car.

“Don’t listen to him, Wrenna. He doesn’t know what he is talking about.” She said reassuringly.

“Yeah, sure,” I said, walking down the car and out onto the platform.

As I gazed upon the castle that was lit a fire by candlelight, I sighed. The only problem was, Martell did know what he was talking about. My brother released a curse upon the school that still haunted the halls to this day. They almost had to close down the school twice last year. But that was a part of my plan too. I was going to rid the school of the curse and restore honor to my family name. Even if I died trying.

thatsadifferentstory:

A patronus, Harry tells Hermione, is acing a test and the warmth of a butterbeer between your hands. It is your friends holding you when you fall, and Ron’s sparkling eyes when you whisper hi. And there’s an otter, swimming, and Hermione is blushing.

A patronus, Harry tells Ron, is Ginny’s shaky smile lighting up the world at the end of second year. It is winning the Quidditch World Cup, unwrapping yet another knitted jumper, and your startled surprise at the sight of Hermione punching Draco in the face. And there’s a dog, chasing the otter, and Ron is laughing.

A patronus, Harry tells Luna, is the feeling of starlight on your skin and grass between your bare toes. It is snow melting through your fingers, the magic your mother used to make, something singing in your heart when you stare at the impossible. And there’s a hare, jumping, and Luna is shining.

A patronus, Harry tells Cho, is Marietta shouting the lyrics of her favourite song, dancing in the rain during a storm. It is the look on Cedric’s face when he saw you at the Yule Ball, his hand holding yours and never letting go. And there’s a swan, sliding, and Cho is crying.

A patronus, Harry tells Seamus, is Dean’s funny expression when he is about to burst into laughter and the sound of a explosion that turns out right. It is the fireworks, bright flowers blossoming in the night sky; and the fire burning in your lungs as you fly. And there’s a fox, running, and Seamus is smirking.

A patronus, Harry tells Ginny, is the world expanding underneath you and the wind playing with your hair. It is dancing and laughing until there are tears on your cheeks, Molly’s disapproving voice and Arthur’s amused eyes after one of the twins’ pranks. And there’s a horse, flying, and Ginny is grinning.

A patronus, Harry thinks, is that weird feeling that lives in his chest when the Room of Requirement glows silver, speaking of times when the world was golden.
