summary: With the arrival of their Hogwarts letter, it meant that the Malfoy twins were off to Diagon Alley. Asterope Malfoy, marred by an encounter with a werewolf, has been the shame of her family so a trip to Diagon Alley meant being left in the care of their Squib maid. However, she will soon find out that being left with the Squib maid meant she could get away with things that her parents would never let her do like befriending the Weasleys and getting a pet cat.

“Oh, I am,” Aurelia says, “I think Draco should be at Madam Maulkin’s right now, can we go there … I wanna rub it in his face that my wand is cooler than his is!”
“I don’t think he’s got his wand yet, wee moon,” Mae says.
“So, why would that stop me from bragging about my wand?”
“What if his wand ends up being cooler than yours?”

Aurelia Black, had come out of the Triwizard Tournament a winner and survivor alongside the famed Harry Potter. Dealing with not only the loss of her dear friend but the return of Lord Voldemort as well, Aurelia is holding everything together with a piece of thread and it’s on the verge of snapping. She’s not sure just how much longer she’ll last but once she takes a look at the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, she knows it’ll take a miracle for her to make it to the end of the year. And if she’s not going to make it through this year, you bet, Aurelia will take that pink toad down with her.
Everything has changed, Aurelia has changed and she’s afraid that she’s too far gone at this point and once that thread snaps, it’ll be too late for her. And she supposes this is oddly fitting, considering her name and what it means — the sun-faced star, the golden one — perhaps Robert Frost was right when he wrote Nothing Gold Can Stay. Of course, that would mean she would have had to be golden and she never was — a copper-filled girl trying so desperately to live up to the name bestowed up her but never quite reaching that goal. The main book is called MAKE THEM GOLD it is set during Goblet of Fire, it’scompleted. Then there’s the direct sequel called NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY and that is almost completed but so far there’s only sixteen chapters published, the rest are in the drafts. There’s also a prequel that’s set in the same universe called WATCH ME WHILE I BLOOM but that’s on hold at the moment because of writer’s block.

… Aurelia goes back to her work only to be interrupted hardly ten minutes by none other than Neville, he gives her a sheepish look after poking her shoulder “Hey, Ari, can you help me with this, uh, question here?”
Nervously, Aurelia glances at Neville and the parchment in his hands. His round face is bright red and his hands are shaking, she nods her head “Aye, sure what is it?”
“Why are you ignoring me,” Neville says quickly, almost in one breath but he gives her a determined stare.
Aurelia blinks, smiling slightly “Wow that was — wow, well played, Plant Boy.”
Neville gulps but the sly smile on Aurelia face makes the bold question on the tip of his tongue easier to say “I think the, um, answer is supposed to be, uh, longer than that.”
Aurelia laughs, smiling widely, she gives him finger guns and wink “I’m sure you’re right, Plant Boy but Sinistra is staring at us and I’m sure she knows just as well as we do the answer isn’t one she wants discussed on her watch.”
“After class then,” Neville says, it’s not really a question, Aurelia can tell he wants answers and he deserves them but she can’t give him truthful ones.
“Aye, after class, Plant Boy.” Aurelia agrees, smiling fading as she instantly regrets saying yes to this. What if he knows, what if Lyra actually told him and he’s going to —

… She blinks, startled by the fact that he’s genuinely annoyed. In the time she’s known Neville and Aurelia, he’s never been anything but patient with her and to see him act like this, it leaves a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach, Abigale frowns and scuffs her feet against the snow-covered ground.
“Well, it’s not that she’s confiding in me or anything, like, we’re not even hanging out for fun. I’m teaching her Legilimency and Occlumency, she needs it because of Professor Black, who’s like a total twat,” Abigale says quickly.
Neville’s annoyance fades back into concern “What did Lyra do to her, is that why she hasn’t talked to me?”
“Well, Longbottom, it’s up to her to tell you that. And she will, she doesn’t want to lie to you, she’ll tell you anything — anyway, I’ve got to, like, go. I will tell her to talk to you, don’t worry, Longbottom, I am rooting for you,” Abigale says, winking at him. …

CHAPTER UPDATE:46 || WHO ARE YOU REALLY?
… Apparently all the professors were told by Dumbledore to pass the message along to Aurelia because on the way up she passed Professor Flitwick and Professor Sinistra both tell her a similar message. And Aurelia finds herself very uneasy and angry by the time she gets to his office. She doesn’t understand why he wants to speak with her, she hasn’t done anything wrong.
Entering the office she’s met with sight of Dumbledore and Umbridge — ah, fuck this can’t be good. Aurelia shakes in both anger and nerves as Dumbledore and Umbridge leer at her, they both look feverishly excited about something and that makes Aurelia feel very queasy. She scuffs her feet against the ground, biting her lip and she wants to stand tall but she feels very small “Why am I here?”
“Did the professor who told you I needed to see you not tell you why I’ve requested to speak with you,” Dumbledore questions, sounding slightly exasperated as he spares a glance at Umbridge, Aurelia shakes her head.
Dumbledore doesn’t look like he’s going to explain but it’s not like he would get the chance to because Umbridge clears her throat and pulls out a long black envelope with the Ministry of Magic emblem on it in gold ink. …

summary: Asterope Malfoy is finally heading to Hogwarts and before she even steps foot in the castle she’s gone and sort of befriended two Blood-Traitors and Muggle-born. The young girl always knew that Hogwarts she would meet strange new people, her Squib maid told her she would question everything she had been taught, Asterope just didn’t expect it to happen so quickly. But, Asterope was a lonely child, always yearning for a love she had lost before she could even remember it properly, and she would throw everything she knew down a drain just for one good friend.

“Maybe, try reading it out loud. Uh, that’s what my grandpa use to tell me when I would learn hard words. You — You might see it in a, uh, a new light,” Neville suggests.
Aurelia stares at him, long and hard, he turns bright red as her green eyes burn into his skull. Then she smiles and tells him that he’s brilliant, this only makes him turns even more red.
“Do you mind if I do that now?”
“No, uh, not at all. Um, go ahead,” Neville says shyly, gesturing to the book with his chubby hands.
Aurelia opens the book and begins to read, her Scottish accent transitions smoothly into a southern accent as she reads the book to him. It doesn’t take long for Neville to be lulled to sleep with her very soothing and very impressive southern accent, his head rests upon her shoulder. She’s very worried that he might drool on her but she’s even more worried about waking him up. Aurelia falls asleep shortly after him, her head comes to rest upon his head and his hair is very fluffy. Between, the rhythmic sounds of the moving train and the fact that Aurelia had been having trouble sleeping the last couple of days, it’s not long before Aurelia has fallen into a deep sleep.
