OK, confession. When I’m wanting to add a classic to my bookshelves, I research which available version has the cover artwork that I like the most. What can I say? I’m a sucker for beautiful books.

Edgar Allan Poe, America’s greatest gothic horror author. This 3 ¼ inch Running Press edition published in 2014 contains many short stories and poems, including “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Masque of the Red Death”.

Well, you folks really seemed to like the post I made about Poe, so I thought I’d also share my other miniature books by Poe. These are visually less interesting, but they’re both great editions.

The 2003 Del Prado edition of The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Stories has 15 full short stories by Poe. It’s 2 ½ inches tall, 1 inch wide, and 640 pages long.

“The Gold Bug”, on the other hand, is a single short story put out by the Little Leather Library ca. 1930, 4 inches tall. The Little Leather Library put out over 100 short stories, poetry collections, and plays, but I have yet to find a complete list of everything they published. I do know they also have Poe’s “The Raven and Other Poems” and “Murders in the Rue Morgue”, though. This particular short story is actually not that spooky- it’s a treasure hunting story that introduces some basic elements of ciphers. Cool!

And for Halloween itself, let’s take a moment to appreciate the ever macabre Edgar Allan Poe!

          An older poet, much of his language is obsolete in the modern era yet conveys meanings we could not hope to comprehend without it

          The modern-day version of a classical poet: free verse is his specialty!

          The O.G. dark academic, the literature teacher’s favourite Halloween lesson.  Nothing can beat the simple and unsettling Poetry of Poe!

          Nothing will ever be as iconic as The Picture of Dorian Gray has become in the DA aesthetic! a definite must-read.

I came across this painting and couldn’t look away from it. Rene Magritte’s Not to Be Reproduced encourages us to look longer for a very important reason. It shows a man with his back to the viewer, standing in front of a mirror. On the ledge we see a copy of Edgar Allan Poe’s(my inspiration for Poetry) only novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordan Pimm of Nantucket. We cant help ourselves but to see a rather odd visual. Instead of man’s face being reflected as we would expect, the mirror shows the back of his head, while the book is reflected back in the mirror correctly. This obscurity strikes on the main theme of our ever changing perception. We assume what the mirror will reflect but we are denied the answer we expect. This theme becomes more prominent in today’s world where misinformation mends our perception by appealing to emotions and other storytelling measures. We take things at their face value(first impression is not the last impression for f**k sake) without ever questioning and interrogating things in the first place. The significance of Edgar’s book is that most of his work also deals with the perception of reality. Without getting too philosophical about nature of truth and falsehood, we like to think that our viewpoints about the world are backed up by the facts which we acquire through our timelines and newsfeed. Another major theme present in the painting maybe that of our own identity. The man looks with care into the mirror and wonders who he really might be. We lose our identity in this world where regulation of behaviour and pseudo interaction has become quite the norm. We are always hungry for praise, attention and worried about opposition and in this way lose much of our originality in thinking. We don’t have a secure hold on our values and judgements. This technique of hiding faces, is used by Magritte in many of his paintings like The Lovers, Son of Man and the Great War. This technique evokes confusion, unease and curiosity. Therefor i think, we should use these ordinary moments in our ordinary lives by cleaning up our conflicting inner selves.

❈ This man is hard at work reorganizing his notes to make sure that everything he plans will make you comfortable as soon as possible. There might be some slight grumbling about having to rework it all, but he’s really more than happy to do it and loved the chance to review everything.
| ✧ Expect a lot of clarifying questions, if you’re comfortable with them, to make sure he’s doing everything properly. Is it only under certain conditions? Are foods an issue? What should he have on him to help most effectively?
❈ As soon as he has his new plan, he will be on it 100%. Before you even have the chance to become uncomfortable, he’ll correct any issues. Always has a spare jacket with him if he’s going to be with you, just in case. And maybe an extra spare, to be safe.
❈ He will definitely curse out the weather if it changes too fast. I feel like he’d be the type to complain about it if it was different than the forecast anyway, but if it’s making his s/o uncomfortable? Unacceptable.
❈ He just wants you to be perfectly content at all times, and anything in his power he can do to help with that, you can consider it done.

✧･ﾟ: * AtsushiNakajima

❈ I feel like he’d be very aware of your needs generally, but especially with the cold, considering what he was wearing before he got an outfit from the ADA.
| ✧His old orphanage messed up a perfectly good man, that’s what they did. Look at it, it’s got anxiety.
❈ That being said, he will now make sure he does everything he can to keep you warm. Make sure that you always have enough layers available, anywhere you’re staying is well heated enough, the works.
❈ He probably runs warm, so he’s more than happy to cuddle up to you, and will initiate it anytime he sees you shivering. I think he’d also use his ability, so you could snuggle up with his warm fur when you’d like.

✧･ﾟ: * Osamu Dazai

❈ Get ready for plenty of jokes about freezing to death together, it comes with the territory.
❈ He will do a lot to make sure that you’re accommodated though it will either be very obvious or things you’d never even think to question.
❈ Most of the things he does without you even knowing, or anyone else realizing for that matter. As soon as he finds out, you’re never going on a mission/errand in the cold again. It just won’t even come up, he’ll keep the conversation toward any other options to go. If you work for the ADA with him, the building will always be kept high enough that he doesn’t need to worry about you.
| ✧ Though Kunikida would definitely complain about the constant use of electricity being out of budget if he didn’t know why.
❈ But, doing things to help you that you notice? Expect a big show, all the dramatics. Flailing and acting like he’s going to freeze without it when he gives you his coat (those bandages keep him plenty warm don’t worry about it), or the absolute quest that is going into the other room and grabbing you a blanket for movie night.
❈ He wants the attention, after all, if he’s doing so much for you like this, you simply must thank him for it.

✧･ﾟ: * Edgar Allan Poe

❈ I think that Poe runs cold anyway, look at him, he definitely has no circulation.
| ✧ This is not helped by the fact that he picks janky old buildings, abandoned castles, and victorian style mansions anytime he can for the aesthetic.
❈ So, with a s/o that’s bad with cold, it’s both a blessing and a curse. He’ll be worried about you, and fretting over making everything comfortable for you, but making him actually warm-up is definitely good for him. Use those fancy fireplaces for once.
❈ He has enough layers to share though and will do so. If he notices you getting chilly, he’ll be quick to give you his cape and ribbon, and more if you need them.
| ✧ Also, Karl makes a great lap (or shoulder, chest, etc) warmer, and will gladly sit on you as well.
❈ Warm this boy up with you? Please, he needs it. Grab him and cuddle next to the (sixth) industrial-strength space heater he just bought you.

Notes:

Apparently Youtube is awash in videos featuring blighters suffering from  hematoma (stagnate blood) in one form or another, something that I find I cannot turn away from once I hit “play.”  I know, I know, “fetid phantasma,” is such a $20 phrase in a $5 sentence but it’s so much fun to say. It’s like the word,“glooped;” sure, I can use other words to describe decay but my world would be slightly duller without some good gloop in it.
