How do booktubers read so many books in a month???

If I finish one a month I’m proud of myself. It’s a process of reading. Setting the book down to stare at the ceiling. Crying and smiling while saying “It’s so damn brilliant”

Or putting the book down and staring at the camera like I’m in the office because its so irritating.

Then there’s the two week period of book hangover when you can stop thinking about how brilliant this author is for making you feel things again.

I have to collect my thoughts and then write my opinion to sort out how I actually feel about it (welcome to this blog)

“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.”

- To Kill a Mockingbird

I’ve started reading To Kill a Mockingbird because apparently I’m the only child who didn’t have to read this in school. I’m glad because now there’s a good chance I won’t loathe the thought of this book by the end.

Well a 48 hour power outage in a snow storm has made me very productive with my reading.

I finished The Little White horse by Elizabeth Goudge. I watched and loved the movie as a kid and I can say they mauled the movie and the book was better. Despite the fact that she ends up marrying her cousin and having ten kids, it was an enjoyable kids book.

I also finished the Fellowship of the Ring and started Two Towers. It was wonderful as always

I started reading Pride and Prejudice but it was late, I had no light and that print is VERY small for such convoluted grammar, so I didn’t get very far.

I’m hoping to read more classics this year that I’ve been wanting to read for ages. So far I’ve got a strong start on 2020! I don’t read as much as most “readers” do but I don’t want to pressure myself and just read when I feel like it and read what I want.

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro Review…

I give this 1 out of 5 stars… buckle up

Oh god this book. This painfully quaint and politely awful book. This books is so posh and British, the characters would murder you and then say, “Jolly good chap, sorry old boy. Top of the morning.”

Basic premise: Fantasy version of England is under fog of memory loss and no one can remember past a few hours. the protagonists Beatrice and Axl are the old couple who leave their valley to find their son who left them many years ago. The reader is reminded MANY times that their son is waiting for them and they must go to him. Every new person they meet along the way, they have to tell they are going to their son who is waiting for them.

Stuff happens and they end up traveling with a stereotypical, perfect hero named Winston, and a boy named Edwin whose only characteristic is he hears the voice of his mother who abandoned him and that he’ll be a warrior one day.

King Arthur exists in this world but he is dead and one of his knights is still charged with slaying the dragon. That’s about all there is to this story.

My Thoughts:

The story wasn’t awful or poorly done. It would be a good simple story for people who are new to fantasy or who don’t like high fantasy.

I didn’t enjoy the lack of interesting mystery or original storytelling. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and I couldn’t relate to the story or characters.

This story had zero tension or excitement but I was so on edge and stressed reading this because I was convinced that there was going to be a massive twist that ripped this quaint little story apart… but it never came. it ended exactly how I anticipated with no suprises. The dragon was slain by the hero, the couple survived and were on their way to their sons grave… btw yeah he’s dead and this was revealed in the most boring bit of dialogue.

The characters could’ve compensated for the lack of an interesting story but they remained flat, dull and predictable. You will find no gray morality much less any evil or twisted characters. It’s just lovely, perfumed, unyielding, POLITENESS. I never thought I could hate a wholesome and cute old couple but I just couldn’t deal with the fact that these characters were so unnervingly nice it was creepy…

I could go on nitpicking and I know this sounds like I hate nice stories but I was so bored and was waiting for a twist, I finished this story out of spite.

I recently looked at some of my all time favourite books and realised that they all contain a historical element. It’s funny because I was never really inclined to read any historical fiction but The Raven Cycle, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, One Last Stop and These Violent Delights all give us glimpses into the past through a new lens.

This is why I was so excited when PanMacmillan South Africa sent me a copy of Lucy Holland’s Sistersong. This book sounds right up my alley and I’m very interested in reading it as soon as possible.

“The First Daughter is for the throne. The Second Daughter is for the Wolf.” - Hannah Whitten

For the Wolf was such an entertaining read. I started reading it for the Read Better Book Club and I found myself finishing the book in a matter of days because I couldn’t put it down. It was just so engaging and had ALL THE TROPES I love. Marriage of convenience, ONLY ONE BED, grumpy/sunshine. Would 10/10 recommend!

How many fellow #booknerds are out there?

This is a note to 9 year old me. In 1999.
10 years later, I would get my passport stamped for the first time.
I would move to England.
I would backpack through Europe.
I would then go on to have to spend most of my adult life
traveling for music across the US on open roads
that hugged both eastern and western coastlines
and everywhere in between
and I would learn a whole lot of airport codes.

But back then, I didn’t know any of that.

Back then,
I stood under fluorescent lights
on greyish green carpet
in front of metal shelves
in a small town
with nothing more
than a big imagination
a library card
and endless rows of colorful books
with colorful stories
that I’d carry with me for years.

I would learn so many things thanks to my purple Nancy Guinn Library Card.
That library card was a passport, too.

(This may feel a little cheesy to some, but hey, you #booknerds out there understand. :)
