Wei Wuxian: Jiang Cheng! Jin Ling is missing!
Jiang Cheng: what am I supposed to do about it? Do you think that me and Sect leader Jin arranged to microchip him in case he got lost or something?
Wei Wuxian: well, did you?
Jiang Cheng:
Jiang Cheng: of course I did.
Jiang Cheng: here wait a second, Jin Guangyao has the tracking thing.
*Playing house with Jin Ling*
Jin Guangyao: *holding a doll* I was thinking about going back to school and start a career!
Jiang Cheng: *holding a teddy bear* nonsense, you are staying at home and having my kids.
Nie Mingjue: What the fuck are you guys doing?
Jiang Cheng: playing systematic oppression.
Jin Ling: Don’t kill me I have uncle’s.
Murder: do you really think that would stop me from killing you?
Jin Ling: That wasn’t a plea for mercy, it was a warning.
Murder: Wait what—
Jiang Cheng: *breaking the door with a kick*
Jin Guangyao: are you ready to die?

the yi city arc
I love the idea of Jin Ling being independently wealthy because of the sheer number of times he has been paid for his silence. A-Yao loses Jin Ling in the market for 5 minutes, and after he finds him, is just like “don’t tell your Jiujiu” and gives him money. When Jin Ling hears Jiang Cheng cursing one day and starts repeating him, Jiang Cheng has to write out 2 checks, one so that Jin Ling doesn’t say those words again, at least until he’s older, and another so that if his xiao shushu asks, he didn’t learn those words from Jiang Cheng.
I didn’t want to make a long post even longer, especially as this is only partially related, but as a follow-up to this post, there’s a reason that Jin Ling deciding he doesn’t want to hate anybody is the triumph of the story. I’ve seen people call it Jin Ling choosing not to continue the cycle of revenge, and that’s certainly part of it! But if it was JUST about not pursuing revenge, the book could easily have ended in Jin Ling telling Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning that he doesn’t hate them and he’s letting it go but he also doesn’t want them in his life and wants them to keep their distance from him as much as possible. This would make me personally sad because I love family, but I could not fault his conduct. Jiang Cheng’s problem isn’t that he pursued revenge because like…what revenge? The threat of the Idea of Jiang Cheng looms large in the book particularly, but he doesn’t really do anything. His problem is that he’s been tearing himself up for 13/16 years about whether still loving WWX is a betrayal to his family, because he can’t reconcile his love for his brother with the pain and betrayal he feels. There’s a reason why he keeps calling Wen Ning the murderer of Jin Zixuan even though WWX is objectively more at fault. Jin Ling would be perfectly justified in hating any or all of Wei Wuxian, Wen Ning, and Jin Guangyao, but he doesn’t want to, so he’s not going to try to force himself, just as he’s not going to try to repress it. They all caused him varying levels of irreparable harm, and it isn’t okay! But Jin Ling cares about them, so he will deal with the contradiction.

Did I get this right?
Sect Leaders by How Likely Their Disciples Are to Accidentally Call Them “Dad”
- Most Jiang sect disciples have slipped up and accidentally called Jiang Fengmian “dad” at least once. Look at that archery lesson! Strong dad energy.
- One notable exception is Wei Wuxian, who is so terrified that he might accidentally call Jiang Fengmian “dad” where someone could hear that he’s constantly on alert for it.
- By contrast, no Jiang sect disciples have ever accidentally called Jiang Cheng “dad.” However, at least one sleep-deprived disciple has accidentally called him “jiujiu” after a long night wrangling Jin Ling.
- Nobody in the Wen sect would dare accidentally call Wen Ruohan “dad.” Xue Yang called him “daddy” once, but that was on purpose to see what would happen — sadly, Wen Ruohan was too far gone at that point to notice or care, and the telepathic chokings neither increased or decreased in frequency or quality.
- It’s pretty rare for Lan disciples to call Lan Qiren “dad,” but he secretly loves it when they do; sadly, neither Lan Xichen nor Lan Wangji ever make this error.
- Lan disciples will, occasionally, call Lan Xichen “dad,” but it’s usually not a slip-up in front of the class, it’s more of an on-purpose thing: he’s like “Don’t forget, curfew’s in an hour!” and they’re like “thanks dad!”
- Nobody except Lan Sizhui ever calls Lan Wangji “dad” but somehow they say “Hanguang-Jun” in a way that sounds like “dad.”
- Lots of people call Jin Guangshan “dad,” but not in an “accidentally slip up in front of the class” kind of way, more in a “surprise, I’m your bastard child” kind of way.
- No Jin disciples call Jin Guangyao “dad,” and this hurts his feelings and he secretly suspects it’s because they don’t respect him.
- No Nie disciples call Nie Mingjue “dad” but every single Nie disciple has accidentally called him “da-ge” at leastonce. It’s almost a rite of passage.
