THUNDER THURSDAY #83: Book Requests, and a Tutorial Question!

Hey folks, Paul here for THUNDER THURSDAY! Today marks one month since the book came out–I’ve been thrilled with the journey so far, and I’d love to keep the momentum going!

If you’re into it, check out thundercluck.com/book and any of the following:

Now, about tutorials!

While I enjoyed compiling the TUTOR TUESDAY PDFs, I know it’s been a hot minute since we had new tutorial content to share. Meg (@rawranansi), our tutorial mastermind, has been super busy with work! So I wanted to ask:

Would you be interested in animation tutorials for OpenToonz?

OpenToonz is an open source (which means ethically free!) 2D animation software, and I’ve been learning it myself since I started using it for the book trailer this past summer.

It’s a powerful program, though the interface definitely takes some getting used-to. I’d love to share what I’ve learned, especially since the program’s available for all!

If you’re interested, let me know. Comments and reblogs are much appreciated! Thanks,

Paul

An illustrated haiku about a little girl who can create structures using only her imagination (and the help of her animal friends of course!) Mr. turtle doesn’t seem to be contributing much but at least he holds the teapot

My Family Four Floors Up written by Caroline Stutson, illustrated by Celia Krampien and published by Sleeping Bear Press, 2018.

I got some copies of the most recent book I illustrated in the mail. It’s a sweet story about a little girl, her puppy and cat and follows their day with lots of rhyming, repetition and references to colour. Here is the cover and some interior spreads that I like. The book is available via the Sleeping Bear websiteorAmazon.com (product ships to Canada as well from Amazon).

One would think that after so many moons, the den she slept in every night would have slowly become home again. It wasn’t quite there. The older she got, the more she thought about it. The more she thought about it, the more cemented the space became. Not… scary, per se, but heavy. Significant. Her mother’s last breath happened in there, after all.

In everything he did and said, the Kol and Malaysia, and the magic they all fostered, was supported without question. It was an image he wanted to display; a desperate hope he clung to. A devoted Kol, ready to throw himself into any danger that threatened the pack or their cause - and, especially, Remiel.

Despite the show, he believed it almost fully… but for an inkling doubt. It itched at the back of his eyes every time he looked upon the ruins in the distance. A doubt that wondered if his hopes would be answered… or if he would find that his time had been wasted. No magic had ever shown itself to him - and a shrieking Dios was hardly proof of the island’s gifts. All he had was faith, and the last bit of his heart kept chanting, over and over, what if?

What if you’re wrong?

A ready smile, a heartfelt laugh. Hathondel was a darling of Skydas, happy to bring cheer to the life of any wolf that wanted and needed it. She seemed so light as air to just about anyone that saw her, with a promising future ahead of her no matter which path she chose.

No one saw the weight that held itself over her, threatening to crush the young wolf in the first moment of weakness. She knew of it all too well; a metaphor and a literal feeling.

Guilt.

The happiness they all saw was real, but they didn’t know the cursed underside.

Eurus was a wild one. That much was true, and the whole pack knew it. Opinionated, passionate - were he the sort not to make friends, not to help the pack and his packmates live their lives, he might be unliked. These were not necessarily bad traits; only once they turned tepid with anger, the barest flip of a switch, did he become a problem.

Until then, though, Eurus was a part of things, and happily. He seemed at home. Set, and settled. Despite friendships, allyships, few knew him so well that they could see when the surface cracked, those quiet instances where he found himself alone and introspective.

All it took was the flash of blue-grey fur in the distance.

A fire if ever there was one, Eurus was a Skydan, and he was apparently happy.

Parts were there: flashes of fury, where the fire raged uncontrolled. Or the purposeful disappearance around certain others. The avoidance of the sick and their caretakers. But no one had put the whole together. No one had managed to see that the wolf so blatantly AT HOME was the furthest thing from it, and were he to have his way, all the trees around him would be burning to the ground.

I made a few copies of Wishes that are up for sale in my shop now! This was kind of my first short picture book project a few years ago set to a lovely poem and I am still really fond of it.
