The tone difference in foraging guides between native plants and invasive plants is literally so funny to read

Terry imma need examples

Foraging guide entry on native plants: Make sure you only take a small amount from a well-established patch. Leave some for the wildlife, and yourself next year! Please get involved in land restoration programs to protect this plant for the future :)

Foraging guide entry for Japanese Knotweed: RIP RIP TEAR KILL REND DESTROY EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT  E V I S C E R A T E EAT EAT EAT EAT

It’s similar for wildlife.

Brochure about native fish: Remember to only fish for approved species at the appropriate time of year and only with a license and correct fishing gear. These rules exist to make sure we don’t damage local fish populations and these amazing animals can be around for future generations!

Brochure about invasive lionfish: You can kill them with a SPEAR, you can kill them with a HOOK, you can kill them with your BARE HANDS (but watch out for the spines)…did we mention the flesh of this spicy devil fish is DELICIOUS?? Do your part for the environment and CONSUME THE PROBLEMSRIC LION OF THE SEA.

Young Invader

This is a juvenile red lionfish(Pterois volitans). As it matures, those conspicuous pectoral fin spots will disappear, and it will develop the striking brownish-red stripes characteristic of its adult form.

While originally found in the Indo-Pacific region, P.volitans has become an invasive species in the Northwestern Atlantic and the Caribbean, possibly through introduction as released exotic pets.

Their pelagic larval phase (not shown here) has certainly helped their invasive cause. As tiny larvae, they ride the currents, allowing them to disperse and establish populations throughout their new ‘home’.

As invaders, they have the potential to upset the balance of local reef ecosystems, affect fisheries production, and threaten human health (since, being members of the Scorpaenidae family, they are venomous).

⭐️ Ooh, I’m lion, I’m a queen ⭐️
I dropped my wips immediately when I saw the adorable new Arcana charms. My close friends know how obsessed I am with the sea, so I was excited to work on this! Here’s Clara with a lionfish. I named her Zsazsa. I thought it’d be fitting because she’s a Leo and also because lionfish are known for being beautiful but poisonous.

I was blown away with the response I got from my first batch as well as on my Instagram so here are even more exploration of Biology-infuenced Merfolk, AKA even more of Kara’s neighbors.

Likewise, you can find out more about them on my instagram, as this is not just an exploration of jaw apparatuses, but also merfolk fashion.

Most merfolk clothing are based off of the creatures of the sea and some amphibious critters, from fishes to crocodiles and mammals (like the Elephant seal jacket of the lionfish!)

Woven kelp are another major clothing materials, with clams, pearls and mussels act as jewelry. Sometimes whole critters are used as both fashion and pets! Sharks likewise don’t need braces, so Mrs. Frilled Shark simply thought they were fashionable!

Hello, it’s still technically Mermay, have a short, goofy fish AU comic series about these two dinguses! Saeren is a cheerful, flashy little betta fish merperson, and Siyrai is a monstrous deep sea combo of lionfish and anglerfish who does not know how to handle affection, but is still extremely gay.

(They/them pronouns for both of these fish, please)

Depthspot - Water/Poison evolution for Seaking, a viciously cruel creature with poison so lethal that one touch of its spines or horn is fatal. They live in the sunken ocean palaces of long-forgotten civilizations.

#Mermay2022 :: Week 01. Coral

RL not good but I can’t resist Mermay. The answer to ‘how quickly can I do this?’ is not very. Apparently coral always reminds me of lionfish because - did I forget I already did one for a past Mermay? Yes. Yes, I did.

It’s time to learn some #FridayFactsabout#Lionfish;
1. The lionfish is a carnivorous & venomous fish belonging to the genus Pterois, native to the Indo-Pacific.
2. Also called zebrafish, firefish, turkeyfish, tastyfish or butterfly-cod, it is characterized by conspicuous warning coloration with red, white, creamy, or black bands, showy pectoral fins, and venomous spiky fin rays.
3. The lionfish, a longstanding showstopper in home aquariums, is a flourishing invasive species in U.S. Southeast and Caribbean coastal waters.
4. This invasive species has the potential to harm reef ecosystems because lionfish will kill off helpful species such as algae-eating parrot fish, allowing seaweed to overtake the reefs. Their populations are also growing because lionfish have no known predators and reproduce all year long; a mature female releases roughly two million eggs a year
