A rare sight nowadays. This horse carriage tradition in NYC is dying out. For many reasons. The story of the horse carriages is pretty interesting! Most of the horses & carriages have homes (garages) in Hells Kitchen. HK is known for it and you can literally smell it in the air When I lived in HK, I used to see them all the time and see how the owners were cleaning the garages and carriages and taking care of the horses. Over the last few years there were animal right people. There were city authorities. There were NY residents who complained. But never native New Yorkers because they know what the story behind it is all about and how this family tradition / business is passed from generation to generation and how the horse owners take care of the horses. It’s not a profitable business at all. Nevertheless many choose to keep the tradition going. #nyc #newyorkcity #newyork #history #funfacts #horses #horsecarriage (at Hell’s Kitchen)

I’ve had two great years (2015-2017) with a New York magazine @w42st designing their monthly #infographic about NY culture. I loved challenging myself every time to create something new - color wise, #illustration wise, style wise, #typography wise…All drawn by hand in Adobe Illustrator and then put together in Adobe Photoshop. I loved the freedom the Editor in Chief, amazing Ruth Walker, was giving me to explore whatever inspired me at the moment. Of course, I took a lot of inspiration from #NYC itself, especially from #HellsKitchen where I lived at that time. I had someone recently wanting to buy the whole collection ❤️ and #Uber office contacted me in 2017 and commissioned me to make an oversized poster for their office based on my infographic dedicated to #HudsonYards featuring the old and new #landmarks of the area. Many other great things came out of this experience - including illustrating a few film posters and book covers. #w42st #graphicdesign #illustration #design #work #portfolio #infographics #infographic #datavisualization #newyork #newyorkcity #hellskitchen #holidays #landmarks #history #facts #funfacts #alisakrutovsky #adobeillustrator #adobephotoshop #adobe #arts #theatre #culture #food (at New York, New York)

New Yorkers are known to be jaded. We can pass by something over and over and over again and not even know what it is and why it’s there.

This bright red painted steel of Isamu Noguchi’s Red Cube stands out in strong contrast to the blacks, browns, and whites of the buildings and sidewalks around the sculpture. Located in Financial district, Red Cube is surrounded on three sides by skyscrapers, the height of which draw a viewer’s eye upwards. The sculpture itself adds to this upward pull, as it balances on one corner, the opposite corner reaching towards the sky.

Through the center of the cube there is a cylindrical hole, revealing an inner surface of gray with evenly-spaced lines moving from one opening of the hole to the other. Looking through this hole, the viewer’s gaze is directed towards the building behind, tying the sculpture and the architecture together.

Although Noguchi began his sculpting career creating individual pieces, he spent a number of years in the 1940s and 50s working primarily on designing spaces, such as gardens and plazas.

Born in Los Angeles in 1904, Isamu Noguchi was an American artist and industrial designer who is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most important sculptors. However, then, the son of Yone Noguchi, a Japanese poet, and Léonie Gilmour, an American writer who edited much of Noguchi’s work, wasn’t recognized as a sculptor for a while. Abandoned by his father at the age of one, he grew up with his mother.

He was discouraged by friends and mentors from pursuing art. He later decided to pursue sculpture and apprenticed with artists around the world. None of his early works gained him any recognition or provided financial support for a while. But he did manage to meet Frida Kahlo and have a brief affair with her.

His first attempts at the Public Works of Art Program proved unsuccessful, as one after another of his submissions were declined. Red Cube was finally accepted in 1968.

It is also said that the the sculpture represents a die, a roll of chance. #redcube #isamunoguchi #sculpture #sculptureart #sculptures #nyc #newyorkcity #newyork #history #funfacts (at HSBC Bank)

TriBeCa

It used to be one of the busiest merchant-warehouse-trading neighborhoods of New York. Then it became very residential with just a few restaurants and luxury shops. Then it became more alive and visited by tourists when Robert De Niro, a long time resident, put the whole neighborhood back on the map by founding the Tribeca Film Festival, which takes place every early spring (except for the last year).
•Now a home to Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Harry Styles, Meg Ryan, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Liechtenstein Schreiber, Naomi Watts - Tribeca attracts those who like the quietness of the city while we being in very historic beautiful unique neighborhood with a few very good restaurants.

Nothing to see here, just your average tree branch… or is it?

Take a closer look and you might notice the Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus)! This master of disguise lives in parts of Central and South America and roosts on high perches, motionless. It has large bright yellow eyes that you’d think would draw a predator’s attention, but the bird has a workaround: it can close its peepers while staying aware of its surroundings, thanks to slits in its eyelids! At dusk, the nocturnal critter begins to feast on large insects like moths.

The Cape sundew (Drosera capensis) is a carnivorous plant that’s well-equipped to catch flies.

Its leaves are lined with tentacles that are covered in a clear glue-like liquid that helps it to entrap and digest prey. It can also curl up its leaves to put insects into even more of a bind. The Cape sundew is found in marshes in the southwestern tip of Africa.

Squirrel or rabbit? Neither! It’s the southern viscacha (Lagidium viscacia).

This rodent lives in South America and is a skilled climber that inhabits mountainous areas. A gregarious critter, the viscacha lives in colonies, which consist of multiple family units that can be as large as 75 individuals. During the day, it bathes in the Sun and forages for vegetation such as grasses, mosses, and lichens.

Say “hi” to the rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta)!

This large, heavy-bodied lizard can grow to be 4 feet (1.2 meters) long. As you might guess, its common name refers to the horn on its head, sported by both males and females. Bigger in males than females, horns may be useful in combat among males and in displays such as head-bobbing. This animal is found only on Hispaniola, the Caribbean island that’s home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Its diet consists of plants and insects, but it may occasionally feed on carrion.

Its time to learn some #FridayFacts about the #MalabarGiantSquirrel:
1. The Indian giant squirrel, or Malabar giant squirrel, (Ratufa indica) is a large tree squirrel species endemic to the forests of Peninsular India.
2. It is a diurnal and arboreal species. It is an upper-canopy dweller, which rarely leaves the trees and travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6 m (20 ft).
3. The Giant Squirrel is mostly active in the early hours of the morning and in the evening, resting in the midday. They are typically solitary animals that only come together for breeding.
4. When in danger, the Ratufa indica often  freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing.

There once lived a pirate come privateer named William Dampier who upon impressing the Admiralty of the British Royal Navy with his first circumnavigation of the world (as a f**king pirate) and the subsequent book he wrote of his adventures became an English explorer. He would go on to circumnavigate the world twice more, and lead the first expedition to explore “New Holland” with the backing of the British King, becoming the first Englishman to see Australia. That’s one accomplished pirate ‍☠️

Make no mistake though, this man was known for his cruelty ☠️
