(note: I am a white american girl with C cups, blue eyes, and a lifetime of privilege, especially when it comes to seeing myself represented. An apology in advance if I’m overstepping in any way, shape, or form!)

isn’t it sketchy how white characters get to be described as having sharp jaws, piercing eyes, straight noses, full cheeks, having an innocent glow, etc, and the black characters are described as being black. the asian characters are described as being asian. like ???

“X was a tall girl with long blonde hair that fell perfectly down her shoulders, only a few shades lighter than the sun. A permanent blush adorned her cheeks, but her cheekbones stood out against her otherwise childlike features with such womanly grace.”

But you never really see east asian characters being described as having deep-set, piercing eyes that hold your gaze and never let go. You always see narrow/almond eyes, which doesn’t cover all of asia, which is humongous and literally covers so many different ethnicities, and therefore many different eye shapes. Not to mention, the description usually stops at the eyes. I want to read about their warm-toned skin and perfectly sculpted lips. I want to read about umber skin and long, handsome face and their aquiline nose, altogether making them look more like a statue than a person of flesh and blood. I want to read about black characters as more than just a “dark woman” and maybe a passive hair descriptor. What about her large doe eyes and inviting smile? Why do they always have to be the sassy black friend (edit: I do understand all the cultural and historical ties to that stereotype but ??) AND WHY IS THEIR SKIN ALWAYS COMPARED TO FOOD? Maybe this isn’t a problem and I’m reaching here, but it rubs me the wrong way bro.

So yeah I’d like to romanticise (BUT NOT FETISHISE, THERE’S A DIFFERENCE) non-european shit for once, including in the dark academia world because we all know the europeans were late to the party and got all their knowledge from the arabs, the indians–pretty much everyone else.

Also, here’s this wonderful thing I found about Indian culture and dark academia.

Marlene: Your eyes look like dark black holes, but that’s alright, because I like astronomy.

Dorcas: If I had a star for every time you brightened my day, I’d have a galaxy in my hand

Regulus: We have the same mom, siri.

Sirius: i guess that means we’re both sons of a bitch

Headcanon: Every mother’s day before the potter’s adopted sirius, he’d spend the entire day making yo mama jokes to regulus

Not trying to brag or anything, but I can wake up without an alarm clock now simply due to my crippling and overwhelming anxiety, so…

Remus:WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?

Sirius:i used no more tears shampoo as a child and i havent felt a single sane emotion since

James:Welcome to my very first vlog in which I will try different hair products!

How does growing up with elderly parents affect James’s personality?

So@thedreamermusing asked me this question, for fun, and I took it extremely seriously and wrote a whole thesis on it . After lots of lovely encouragement to share it on Tumblr, here it is.

  • Older parents tend to be more relaxed, more stable, more resilient, more self-aware and self actualised, they’re more efficient communicators, they know what they want by now and are less prone to the small stresses of everyday life making them more efficient at communicating with and supporting the emotional needs of their children. We also know that Euphemia and Fleamont yearned for a child thinking they’d never have one, so when finallygiven the opportunity to have what they’d been dreaming of, they were extra doting, extra present and extra supportive parents. I think this level of healthy modelling, first and foremost, is what gave James his propensity as the moral compass and ‘mother-hen’ of the group, it’s what shaped his personality into that of someone who is the glue that holds it all together. It gave him the ability to offer this same level of emotional support to his own loved ones, the same resilience, the ability to communicate in a healthy way (even when surrounded by serial avoidants lol), it gave him that air of unwavering confidence ‘I know what I want and I’ll get it/there’s nothing that can’t be done’ that made him such a strength for his friends.
  • I think that James worried deeply about his parents, they were older and more frail with every passing year and he thought often about losing them, he was very considerate of them and had to look after them in his adolescence. I think this also heavily contributed to his character, his tendency to care for and look after, again that ‘mother-hen’ aspect of his character.
  • Another thing about having older parents, and I suppose this can often be seen as somewhat of a negative thing perhaps, is that you often have a much larger generational gap and not only would this have been the case for James with his parents but he was also an only child. I think this very heavily contributed to his love of mischief. When he finally made friends his own age, the possibilities were endless, it was energy to match his own and he didn’t waste a single opportunity to have fun.

@arizayna

Completely agree!! The other thing is that having older parents means that not only do kids worry about them but they also often prepare themselves for losing them at a relatively young age - knowing that your parents are older and are less likely to be around for important life events (almost grieving them in a way, I think?) this isn’t necessarily a bad thing although it is a bit sad :((
