dailynietzsche:

“What serves the higher type of men as nourishment or delectation must almost be poison for a very different and inferior type. The virtues of the common man might perhaps signify vices and weaknesses in a philosopher.”

—F. Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, §30 (excerpt).

dailynietzsche:

“Whoever has endeavored, as I have, to think pessimism through to its depths and liberate it from Schopenhauer’s philosophy, has thus opened his eyes to the opposite ideal: that of the high-spirited, world-affirming human being who has not only come to terms and learned to get along with whatever was and is, but who wants to have what was and is repeated into all eternity.”

—F. Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, §56 (edited excerpt).

dailynietzsche:

“Modern philosophy, being an epistemological skepticism, is covertly or overtly anti-Christian, though by no means anti-religious. Since Descartes, every philosopher has sought to assassinate the old soul concept, which is the basic presupposition of the Christian doctrine, under the guise of a critique of the subject-and-predicate concept.”

—F. Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, §54 (edited excerpt).

dailynietzsche:

“A new species of philosophers is coming up, and I venture to baptize them with a name that is not free of danger!”

—F. Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, §42 (edited excerpt).

The Sources of Plato’s Opinions-Russell’s History of Western Philosophy, chapter by chapter- (13)

He tells us that Plato was born 428/7 BCE in the early years of the Peloponnesian war. He came from an aristocratic family and despised democracy. There were two main reasons for this, the first of which is that he attributed…

We don’t usually post sold items here, but this 18th-century print after the Flemish painter David Teniers, titled “Philosopher Laughing at Magick,” intrigues us. It might be presumed that the fantastical creatures and supernatural forces associated with alchemy and magic that surround the philosopher — a man of reason — are described in the book that he is reading with a bemused and skeptical smile on his face.  The title of the print states that the philosopher is laughing at magic, but its overwhelming presence in the print makes his relationship with mysticism and the occult somewhat ambiguous. Is he instead an alchemist or fascinated by the theories of alchemy?
