4 years ago we did this shoot with the arms I created and the silicone wounds I sculpted, I did all the painting and applying, my friend was kind enough to model for me. It was my final project for one of my sculpting or prosthetic classes and one of my favorite things I had created during my time at Savini High.

congenitaldisease:

Shadow, a three-legged German Shepherd, has been given a new lease on life after receiving a prosthetic leg. Shadow had his foreleg amputated after he got caught in a trap. He was then abandoned by his original owners and faced euthanasia. That was until he was taken in by Sara May, who campaigned to raise £6,000 for the high tech leg.

HORUS doesn’t exist so much as a single entity but instead burrows into the cracks and crevices of the world around it, specifically adapting to each cell’s needs. Though some push the boundaries of science and technology, most of them probably just spend all day getting angry at the omninet

“As the food shortage grew desperate, prosthetics became patriotic. Robotic limbs and synthetic organs ran on cheap, efficient electricity. We cloaked ourselves in personal holograms to maintain the illusion of the normal human form rather than learn to love our new wilder shapes.”

Anna Coleman Ladd, Creator of Prosthetics For WW1 Veterans

Anna Coleman Ladd (1878-1939) was an American sculptor who founded the American Red Cross ‘Studio for Portrait-Masks’ in Paris, France.

She was born in Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia and educated in Europe, where she studied sculpture in Paris and Rome. In late 1917, Ladd moved to France with her husband, Dr. Maynard Ladd, who was appointed to direct the Children’s Bureau of the American Red Cross in Toul.

It was at this time she was introduced to the work of Francis Derwent Wood in the “Masks for Facial Disfigurement Department” in Paris. After meeting with Wood, Ladd founded her iwn studio to provide cosmetic masks to be worn by men who had been badly disfigured in World War I

Soldiers would come to Ladd’s studio to have a cast made of their face and their features sculpted onto clay or plasticine. This form was then used to construct the prosthetic piece from extremely thin galvanized copper. The metal was painted to resemble the recipient’s skin.

Her services earned her the Legion d'Honneur Crois de Chevalier and the Serbian Order of Saint Sava.

I can’t imagine a project I would be more excited to work on right now. This is one of the largest projects I’ve ever tackled, and what I truly want my art to achieve: using the transformative magic of costumes and movement to help people understand more about themselves and even find the tools to interact more healthily with each other.

I’m working with some of the most talented artists and performers I know, but even as excited and determined as we are, we’re not going to be able to do this alone. Please take a moment to watch our video and check out our campaign. If you can contribute we’d be forever grateful, but you can help us succeed just by spreading the word. Do you know anyone who likes any of the things in that first sentence? Share this with them!

A selection of beautiful prosthetic legs

The majority of modern everyday prosthetic limbs try to imitate real ones in their design. These custom-built legs by Bespoke Innovations are quite the opposite, described by the creators as “unabashedly artificial” and allowing a little bit of personal character to be shown.

Their designer look is underlain by some interesting technology that might soon be the norm in prosthetic limbs. Each is tailor-made for the client based upon 3D scans of the body to help create a better fit whereafter 3D printing allows the designs to be brought to life. Prosthetic limbs are definitely one industry where one size does not fit all.
