The story of The Oracle of Delphi is an endless well where you can go deep as you want, and still find something new (I’ve always found fascinating the fact that the original deity was Python, only later killed and replaced by Apollo).
The concept for this painting came to me as I read that among the phrases supposedly carved at the entrance to the temple (like “know thyself” and such) there was a big, looming “E”.
No explanation, nothing, just “E”. It was a carving so old that not even Plato knew what it meant.
This is the biggest watercolor piece I’ve done in my entire life. I’ve wasted so much time on it that right now I’m hating it with a passion, but hopefully in a couple of weeks I’ll feel more forgiving XD
Medium: watercolors of paper, Gimp for minor touches and the application of the Golden Texture (the original has actual gold leaf though)

The Pythia was widely credited for her prophecies inspired by Apollo.

Color me a little annoyed that these back up stories from the 1990s Marvel annuals never seem to be included in any of the collected editions or digital restorations online and I have to track down whatever discolored dark web version I can get my hands on. Some of these stories are good! I mean, they’re not all good … the second back up story in New Mutants Annual #7 is about Artie and Leech finding a new grandmother, so I’m not doing any posts on that one, but this first story is about Freedom Force attacking Iraq during Desert Storm! Also, color me a little surprised to see Avalanche here. Didn’t he get killed by the the Reavers?
These new writers just aren’t going to give a shit about the continuity, are they. Anyway, I wonder what goes on in this comic.
SWEET LOUISE SUPER SABRE JUST GOT FULL ON DECAPITATED. Look at his head laying there! I can’t believe that just happened! I can’t believe Cable and Rob Liefeld tried to do this a few issues ago and failed, and now it happens again for real!! Ladies and gentlemen, this seems too good to be true, but I think this backup story in an X-Men annual is actually about your favorite asshole super villain team getting horrifically murdered. I hope. I HOPE that’s what this comic is about. Because this is awesome.
I’ve never liked these old assholes, but I sure I do like seeing them get dismembered. Wow! Even Pyro gets it.
This came out of nowhere and was leagues was better than the main story in this annual! What a god damned masterpiece!! Bring on the next chapter! (New Mutants Annual #7 - 1991)

Apollo, god of prophecy, oracles, music, art, protector of and disease of boys and men, and archery.
Apollo holds his bow and arrows behind, while he strums the lyre given to him by hermes. Near the sun flies apollos white crow/raven. The column on the right is capped with a cow, representing his sacred animal as a god of herds. The serpent Python sits dead at his feet, killed by apollos arrow so that the god could takeover the delphi temple location. The temple complex sits underneath the god, while o. The far right, the PYTHIA ( apollos priestess) sitting upon a tripod, breathes the hallucinatory gasses seeping up from the earth to get her prophecies which she bestows upon visitors.
Such an honor to receive this powerful medicine from @averykiyo !! We worked on it all day long and I am deeply in love with the organic flow of it! Still need to touch up a few things and add some accents (after seven hours we were done for the day!) but I am so grateful and feel quite potently transformed!
Gnothi seauton was inscribed at the Oracle of Delphi as one of the Delphic maxims– Know Thyself and thus shalt thou Know God (the Universe). An homage to my Greek ancestors whose protection and lineage and love is wrapped around me like angel wings and olive branches. Stepping into my identity as a powerful priestess, a prophet, a poet, an ancient and empathic soul who is here to help heal myself, others, and Mother Earth as best as I can.
