@joheunsaram This is one of the first BTS fics I somehow stumbled upon - I don’t even remember how but I distinctly remember reading everything in one sitting. Just sitting on my couch like a little gremlin obsessively devouring chapter after chapter, hoping there was another one after, because this story is impossible to put down.

It hits on a lot of personal favorites for me, from a strong, confident and complex female OC and a power figure without the stereotypical trappings of that because she is also so incredibly loving and kind and warm, and not to mention an open, honest and direct partner who doesn’t let her partner get away with shit either. I love love love this Namjoon too but most importantly I love their dynamic and seeing the growth of their relationship, because it’s so fucking healthy. The insistence on compromise, and figuring out what that means for their situation as they get more serious, always communicating and addressing their issues openly (even if sometimes it takes a minute to get there) in everything from the day to day to sex, it’s all just so HEALTHY.

You’ve written such a wonderful thing here (in addition to everything else you’ve written, which I have also obsessively read) that I continue to revisit every time I need a bit of comfort and to remind myself what a strong power couple looks like. Thank you so much for writing this story.

omg simmmmm this is so encouraging?!?! like one of my favourite reviews!! im so happy you stumbled on to this story and im so happy you are enjoying this series! ive had no motivation to write this couple lately (I know so sad they’re my comfort couple too !!!) but I read this and guess who wrote 2k words of the new chapter? ME. HAHAHA

this is honestly want I wanted with this series. a look into how I think a couple of people should communicate when they’re partners… im not gonna spoil the next few chapters but oh man I think you’re gonna enjoy them haha.

fun fact - I wrote the ending of this series when I wrote the first chapter and knowing the outline I have, I have a strong feeling you’re gonna get another 80k out of this couple haha

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! YOU’RE AMAZING AND THANK YOU FOR READING!!!

Yellowjackets: Season 1 Review

The premise of the Showtime series Yellowjackets following the 1996 stranding of a team of female high-school football (soccer) players, their coaches and one of the coach’s 2 teenage sons following a plane crash in a remote Canadian forest and the ensuing tribalism, primal instinct and desperate endeavour to survive, echoes tales such as William Golding’s 1954 novel ‘The Lord of The Flies’…

The Satyr and Other Tales: Book Review

Stephen J. Clark’s The Satyr & Other Tales is an anthology of his earlier book releases The Satyr (2010) and The Bestiary of Communions (2011) now released as a paperback edition.

Uniting the 4 tales in a single anthology is a good move as the tales compliment each other and are united not only by all the tales being set around the times of the two world wars but there is also a thread of…

In 1994, coming straight out of Queensbridge, a young lyricist Nasir Jones debuts his highly anticipated album Illmatic and changes the East Coast rap game forever. Now known through different aliases such as Nasty Nas, God’s Son, Nas Escobar and Nastradamus; back then he was just Nas, a kid giving us a glimpse into his life and what it meant to have a New York state of mind.

Illmatichad only ten songs but five producers including Pete Rock, Q-Tip and DJ Premier.

An intelligent flow blending effortlessly with the beats laid. He’s not just saying something; he’s giving you some insight. An album that demands to be heard, don’t disrespect it by just putting it on shuffle and going about your day. One of those albums you have to own a vinyl of. You can feel the jazz notes float up to the celling, the drums beating off your walls. A true classic, an art form that doesn’t fade with time, it compromises and excels. You listen to the album and feel yourself exhale.

The album opens up with The Genesis.

“Stop fucking around and be a man,
There ain’t nothing out here for you.”

“Oh yes there is, this!”

There is a lot of negativity that get’s planted inside of a young upcoming artists head, bricks of self doubt can bury you before your bloom.

Nas overcame this because he believed in his poetry. He believed in his craft. He believed that Hip-Hop is where his heart is at. This is what the album is all about.

One love,

⇒ Review: Heist RP

appearance;

THEME:

There really isn’t much for me to say in terms of your theme. It’s simple, but in a good way, I suppose; it’s an elegant kind of simple where the white background isn’t too overpowering but instead works as a nice compliment to the sidebar image and each individual post. However, I noticed that if you were to cover up the posts and sidebar text, it’d be easy to mistake this page for any other tumblr blog because the page is lacking a banner, logo, or even a simple title that gives any sort of clue as to what kind of RPG this is or even indicates that it is an RPG.  Also, while the sidebar is a nice image, it’s not telling me much about the roleplay itself—perhaps the setting, but beyond that, nothing else. I suggest using a theme that includes a title or gives you the option of having two images. If you’re adamant on using this particular theme, I think it’d be best if you created some sort of graphic that fits in well with the plot of the RP—one like the one you’re using on your “Full Plot” page would work well, in my opinion.

Speaking of your “Full Plot” page, I quite like it. Again, the white works as a compliment and the greens go well with the overall page and additional graphic. Well done.

GRAPHICS:

The sidebar graphics you’ve made for each character are not only creative, but also provide a little more detail about the character; wonderfully creative. Slight nitpick: the character graphics consist of very bold colors and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, they create a clash between the graphics and the overall theme of softer, dull colors. As for your promo graphic, the first thing I noticed was the word “Heist” being a bit harder to read than the other words. Since the white word is set directly against her white shirt, it blends in with the background. Easily fixable though; just reposition the text and I think it’ll be fine. However, I do like the remainder of the graphic; it fits in with the mood of the RP and looks nice alongside the theme.

plot;

EXTENDED PLOT:

A couple typos I would like to point out before I get into it: I think you meant for “Bobby Bishop is stuck is Paris” to be “Bobby Bishop is stuck in Paris” and “Everyone is just try to do their job” in the last paragraph to be “Everyone is just trying to do their job”

In the first paragraph, you’ve used the whole “there’s just one problem” type of phrase twice, which creates a predictable sort of repetition. If you want to use the same mood and tone set by the “there’s just one problem” phrase, I suggest cutting one out and replacing it with something just as short and blunt such as changing “There’s just one problem. Bobby Bishop is stuck in Paris being tailed by Interpol.” to “Except Bobby Bishop is stuck in Paris being tailed by Interpol.”  Has the same sudden effect, right?

At this point, I would like to make it clear that I have not read nor heard about Heist Society before reading your plot. That being said, I think that your extended plot provides a nice set up for those who have not read the book, like myself.

However, the biggest problem I have with it is that there is simply too much information at once that makes it hard to follow at times. The abrupt transition from the set up to Taccone to the Heist Society to the police left me lost and a bit confused. I’m not going to say you should cut out unnecessary details because to be honest, all of this detail is necessary, especially to those not familiar with the novel. But I did notice that most of these plot points are heavily character driven, so what I would suggest is for you to move (notice I said “move” not “delete” the three middle paragraphs to their own separate and respective pages and then provide links to said pages at the bottom of your main plot or possible somewhere on your “characters” page (for example, something at that says “Read more about the POLICE here [insert link]”).  This would break it up nicely instead of having one long plot that appears as if it were all over the place.

CHARACTERS:

I adore the amount of detailed information you’ve put into each and every bio. The usage of third-person omniscient POV gives me solid background info and a good feel for the characters while still leaving room for me to make my own interpretations about the character. Your relationships are open ended and serve as a good basic starting point for the player to work with.

You haven’t opened yet, so it’s understandable that you don’t have many bios up. When you do post more, I would like to see more diversity. For example, I would love to know more about Marcus Spector and learn about his past and how he felt about taking care of Hale. Non-thieves, such as members of the mob or police, would also be incredibly interesting characters to play and observe; I am to understand that the novel is mainly told from the point of view of the thief? If so, then I’m sure people would love to see the point of view of a mobster or policeman during all this.

miscellaneous;

NAVIGATION:

Very thorough and extensive; I actually didn’t know RPs did playlists until today. Your basics are properly done in order of importance, the links are all working fine, and the only real problem is that not all of your pages are up but again, understandable since you have yet to open.

There’s actually not much for me to say here since it’s so well done. Kudos.

RULES & APPLICATION:

In the fourth rule of your “applying” section, I think it would benefit new roleplayers if you provided helpful links on how to cut posts, reblog as text, and whatever else is necessary. You don’t have to, but it would be a nice little added tip for those not familiar with tumblr RP. I do like how you’ve mentioned that players must be knowledgeable of character connections; I can’t tell you how many times I’ve encountered people in RPGs who had no idea who my character was, despite the bios clearly stating that they were related/roommates/former lovers/etc., but I digress.

At first glance, I thought the application would be easy to fill out but then I saw the “How do you see your character developing?” part of the application; it’s a very nice touch. It really forces the player to carefully think about their character and their personality and how they would grow as a person over time.  However, I still think the application is a bit too simple. Perhaps you could add in a couple questions that the player would have to answer IC, such as “What do you think of your childhood?” or “Opinion on being a thief/mobster/policeman/etc.” or something along those lines. Or you could even add in a “Describe your character in 3-4 sentences” to give the player an even better feel for the character they’re auditioning for.

Also, this is just a personal preference, but you could add in a submit box to both application pages for ease of access. If you don’t know how, ask any RPCHA (myself included) and I’m sure they’ll be glad to help.

ADMIN CONDUCT:

Very professional. You give precise answers to questions and don’t clutter the blog with promotions every ten minutes. Bravo.

overall;

I didn’t have much to comment on, considering how early in development this RP seems to be, but I did like what I saw. Plot could use a bit of cleaning up, but other than that, it’s golden.

Good luck to you and your RP and again, apologies for the wait.

February Reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe

reviews under the cut

Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate vol 6

It’s been a while since I picked up this series but I was able to jump right back in where I left off! Every time I read it, I am reminded why this is one of the most popular sports manga around right now. The action is SO WELL DRAWN, it’s dynamic, it’s full of motion, I am amazed at how many different angles the author manages to find to draw the same rectangular volleyball court over and over. It also has a helpful amount of explanations of the technical rules of volleyball without every getting over whelming. It’s just really good, y'all!!

Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate vol 7

The cliffhanger at the end of vol 6 was so dramatic that I launched right into vol 7! This whole book is taken up by a set of games of Karasuno versus Blue Castle, one of the most exciting rivalries that we’ve had so far. But the core of the story watching the Karasuno players level up their emotional intelligence and communication skills. Watching Kageyama try to smile stuck icy fear into my heart, but watching him high five and compliment his teammates melted it again. Can’t wait to read more!

Yotsuba vol 8 by Kiyohiko Azuma

I love Yotsuba! It remains one of my all-time favorite feel-good manga series, which makes it rather embarrassing to admit that apparently… the last time I picked up a volume of it was in 2013?? Well anyway, I’m back on it, and my library has bought a good batch more volumes since I last checked, hooray! Quite understandably, I had forgotten some of the secondary characters since I last read this series 9 years ago, but otherwise I was able to pick it right back up again and dive right into Yotsuba’s gentle, silly, sweet world. In this volume Yotuba attends a cultural festival and the costumes, settings, and festival scenes were rendered with the high level of gorgeous detail this series always delivers.

Friendship in the Age of Loneliness written and read by Adam Smiley Poswolsky

I’ve been making my way through various nonfiction books on friendship lately, and unfortunately none of them has really impressed me, this one included. I like that it’s current enough to talk about some of the challenges of maintaining friendship during covid, and it has many heartwarming anecdotes from the author’s own life and many fulfilling friendships. But I don’t know that any of its advice really stood out as anything beyond common sense. The one quote from it that I wrote down was “Friendship builds rituals, and rituals build friendship” which does feel like a nugget of truth I want to keep thinking about, but that might be the only piece of this book that sticks in my brain long term.

The Runaway Princess by Johan Troianowski

A young princess repeatedly escapes from her castle to go on lighthearted adventures in the kingdom, meeting various silly or shady characters a long the way. I found the story a little thin, but the art is extremely charming and the book is full of interactive activities like mazes, puzzles, and Where’s Waldo type searches that work very well.

Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate vol 8

A dramatic and difficult ending to Karasuno’s set of games with Blue Castle, which I think filled almost four volumes?? How does this author do it, serious. I’m impressed, and curious to see what happens before the spring tournament begins.

On Tyranny: 20 Lessons from the 20th Century by Timothy Snyder

Timothy Snyder is the author of many books on the rise of fascism and communism in the 20th century, and he put out this very slim volume (just 126 small pages) in 2017 as a response to the Trump administration. The majority of the book remains as timely as ever. It outlines twenty short lessons on how to maintain a democracy, especially in the face of rising political division and authoritarianism. Most of what it boils down to is this: every citizen must be an engaged citizen, because the institutions that protect democracy and civil rights do not protect themselves. He quotes American abolitionism to say “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” To my pandemic-weary brain, this sounds exhausting, so I have also started reading “Pleasure Activism” by andrienne maree brown to try awake further thoughts on this topic.

The Nib Magazine issue 11: Food

A wonderful collection of nonfiction journalism and personal essay comics from The Nib, as always. I especially enjoyed Maki Naro’s “Ode To My Rice Cooker”, “Fatteh, My Father and Me” by Yazan al-Saadi and Ghadi Ghosn and “The Industry’s Backbone” by Gerardo Alba and Ally Shwed. I was also very happy to contribute 6 watercolor food illustrations to this issue!

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marsk read by David Thrope

Sir Robin Blyth, recently orphaned and now in charge of an estate, a London household, and his teenage younger sister, receives the shock of his life when he turns up at what he thinks will be a boring civil service job only to discover that magic is real. Magic is real, and requires paperwork; he has ended up with a liaison position, combing over reports of potential magic sightings and reporting them to either his magical co-worker, Edwin Courcey, or all the way up to the Prime Minister if the problem is serious enough. Things take an even stranger turn when Robin is attacked and placed under a curse by assailants who seem to think he has knowledge of a missing magical artifact. Edwin and Robin did not have a good first impression- Edwin is a prickly, buttoned-up, bookish type, while Robin is a good looking, athletic, traditionally masculine minor noble. But Edwin still feels responsible for breaking Robin’s curse and so takes him back to the Courcey estate, where magic is sunk into the very soil. When it turns out Robin’s processor- presumed missing- was in fact murdered, the pair realize they are caught in a plot much larger than they had comprehended. I enjoyed this book a lot, though it did leave a lot of threads unresolved at the end (it’s the first book of a planned trilogy). It’s kind of a sexy Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel lite, with a distinctly fanfiction feel. On AO3, this book would be rated explicit.

Crush by Svetlana Chmakova

A very sweet continuation of the Berrybrook Middle School comic series. In this installment, Jorge thinks he is above the wave of crushes, dating, and breakups that are sweeping through his junior high class. Until he realizes that the way he blushes and freezes up around Jazmine from the drama club means that- in fact- he likes her! Jorge is a tall, athletically gifted student but he isn’t a jock. He’s a quiet, shy guy who intentionally uses his size and glare to break up instances of bullying or teasing he sees around campus. He mostly keeps to himself except for his two close friends, social butterfly Liv and football team wannabe Garrett. When he learns that Jazmine, the girl he likes, already has a boyfriend, he prepares to keep his feels secret forever. But junior high is full of drama, and the social landscape around Jorge shifts so fast he can hardly keep up. I’ve been a fan of Svetlana Chmakova’s artwork ever since I spotted it in “Manga Mania: How to Draw Japanese Comics” edited by Christopher Hart when I myself was in junior high. I love the gentleness and simplicity of this world, and the diversity of the character designs. I’m glad there’s already another book out in this series for me to read!

Your Fave Is Catholic: Gregory Maguire

Known for: Beloved author of adult literature, children’s literature, short stories, & non-fiction, he is best known for being the author of Wicked: the Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as other Oz related follow-up books such as Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, & Out of Oz, which take the classic Oz books by L. Frank Baum as well as the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz & retell them from a new perspective & in a very adult way. He initially started his career writing stories for children, & while he still writes for children, he found major success writing novels for adults starting in the 1990s. Other notable books he has written include Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror, Mirror, The Next Queen of Heaven, & many more. Besides writing books, he also occasionally does book reviews for the Sunday New York Times.

Evidence of Faith:According to a Vice interview in which Gregory discusses his book After Alice (which is a new look at Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice books), he was asked if his book was touching on social themes found in the original Alice books, & in his response he directly states that he is Catholic. He brings this up to connect how in Catholic school, he learned about Dante’s Divine Comedy & found similarities to the underground depiction of Hell & the Greek afterlife of Hades to Alice’s journey underground. He also answers the question with YES, & also compares it to the Underground Railroad, which happened during the same period when the Alice books were written. In this same interview, he also further shares his Catholic life when he tells of an anecdote where his strict Catholic babysitter flipped out over the overtly sexual content of his first adult novel.
