‘U'au (Hawaiian Petrel)

'U'au (pronounced oo-ah-oo), named after the calls that they make, are incredibly long fliers much like albatross. They can travel nearly 6,000 miles in two weeks before flying back to their burrows on the Hawai'ian islands to feed their chicks.

How does a business win your heart?

This year my husband & I celebrated Valentine’s Day two days late. We drove to the ocean to go razor clam digging. As we were leaving Seattle, ️ we stopped at a sporting goods store to buy shellfish licenses.

But before selling us licenses, the cashier asked many questions, including our social security numbers,  (strange!) then told us there would be a fee for using a credit card.

After a few more roadblocks,  we had our licenses in hand. It could have been a painless experience, but it was frustrating. I was reminded of one of my digital marketing classes where we studied ‘the customer journey.’ ️

In marketing, mapping the customer journey️ helps businesses identify pain points & find ways to avoid or minimize them. It can help turn customers into fans.

One takeaway from the sporting goods store: the way a situation is framed can make a difference.  Simply saying, “It looks like you’re not in the system. No problem!  We just need to add your SSN!” would have removed a pain point.

If we work for a company‍ or for ourselves‍, it’s important to think about clients & anticipate ways to make their experiences better.  No matter what services or goods we offer, the creation of positive moments will delight customers & create fans.

Whether you’re a customer, ️ or a business that serves them,  you might enjoy reading the #NewYorkTimesbestseller,  The Power of Moments. It entertains & teaches some great lessons.

Have you had a great customer experience,  or one that was awful?  How did it make you feel?

What Has Happened to the Ocean’s Plastic Trash?

By: Elizabeth Paulat

3126595_large

Many of us have seen the photos of plastic refuse in the ocean, the large islands of bags and waste that collect at tidal crossroads. Yet when scientists took a survey of the ocean earlier this year, they found a suspicious amount had disappeared. Was it just our good luck that pollution was decreasing? Hardly. It had simply been sinking, breaking apart and embedding itself…

todropscience:

Good news in conservation: A pair of Madeiran storm petrel (Oceanodroma castro)nested for the first time in Berlenga Island, off Peniche coast, Portugual, following the conservationist effort for eradicating its predator, the black rat.

Only one of the 20 artificial nests that project LIFE Berlengas team installed for Madeiran storm petrel has one egg, it sounds not big, but it is the result of a lot of effort.. Hopefully this egg will hatch by January. Until today there were no records of this species nesting in the island, only in nearby islets.

Artificial nests are made of ceramic vases, slightly buried on the ground, with a hole for birds to come in and out.

To help attract nesting pairs, LIFE Berlengas team also installed a system that reproduced typical sounds of a Madeiran storm petrel colony. Also in each nest the team placed a cloth bag used in previous ringing campaigns of this species, since Madeiran storm petrels have a very strong and characteristic smell.

Before scientists find this new species of pelagornithids or huge pseudoteeth birds, called Pelagornis sandersi,we had the record of the largest birds with Pelargonis chilensis… we had it…

That means the bird, Pelagornis chilensis  had one of the longest wingspan ever recorded–a wingspan that was about as long as a giraffe is high, with 17 feet or 5 meters. It cruised the skies between 5 and 10 million years ago.

Pelargonis sandersi, boasted a 21-foot 6.1 meters wingspan, dwarfs that of today’s biggest flier, the royal albatross, whose span measures a “mere” 11.5 feet (3.5 meters). And it rivals that of the largest flying bird on record: Argentavis magnificensa South American condor with a 23-foot (7-meter) wingspa

Pelargonis chilensis is still my fav fossil seabird
