I’d like to point out that actual studies have linked trans suicides to constant misgendering as a cause (one of, I should add), whereas affirmation of gender is known to do the opposite. So intentionally misgendering trans people is pretty much legit trying to kill them.

In other news, water is wet.

Where the study/source?

I’m uber busy at work and I don’t have the time to pull up the specific spot it’s discussed. But, look up the work of Dr. Ry Testa. He’s a trans man tackling these issues.

Someone who knows how to navigate resources and has the spoons and time try and find the paper, save trans momma the trouble.

Sounds super legit though. Being misgendered almost always causes some dissociation and social withdrawal form me since it belittles my identity. I don’t get suicidal thoughts but I could sure as hell see how someone who does would be affected by that.

Hiya!

I’m hoping I could help somewhat.

This is all the work Dr. Testa’s done.

Development of the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience Measure.

Effects of violence on transgender people.

I think this is the one though; The relationship between gender-based victimization and suicide attempts in transgender people.

Misgendering a trans person is a violent act. It’s an emotional abuse that cuts deep into who we feel we are at our core. We have enough to deal with internally, adding external voices to that can destroy us.

GBV was associated with both a history of suicide attempts and numbers of suicide attempts in this study. Participants who had been exposed to victimization were almost four times more likely to attempt suicide than those who had not experienced victimization. In addition, over three-quarters of those who had a history of suicide attempt had attempted multiple times. Trans men exposed to GBV were 2.1 times more likely than trans women to have a history of a single suicide attempt and were 3.2 times as likely to have made multiple suicide attempts. A history of suicide attempts was significantly more common among multiracial individuals, and significantly less common among those of higher SES.

From the last article linked to.

Even more relevant is actually The Gender Minority Stress and Resilience Measure article…

In addition to the violence, rejection, and discrimination experienced by both LGB and TGNC people, TGNC individuals may experience an additional distal stressor, which this study has labeled nonaffirmation. Nonaffirmation occurs when one’s internal sense of gender identity is not affirmed by others. For instance, a trans woman may be addressed as “sir” when making a purchase or answering the phone, or might be referred to with her former male name by an individual not yet fully comfortable with her gender identity. TGNC individuals who do not identify as either male or female (e.g., individuals who identify as genderqueer) may also experience a sense of nonaffirmation as people in their life are unable to refer to them in gender neutral ways. Nonaffirmation of one’s gender identity may occur more or less often for any TGNC individual, based on how their gender expression is interpreted by their social context at that particular time (Beemyn & Rankin, 2011; Bockting & Coleman, 2007; Nuttbrock, Rosenblum, & Blumenstein, 2002). In sum, the literature suggests that TGNC and LGB populations experience both common and also unique distal minority stressors.

It also cites these works in relation to the concept:

Beemyn, G., & Rankin, S. R. (2011). The lives of transgender people. New York, NY: Columbia University Press.

Grant, J. M., Mottet, L. A., Tanis, J., Herman, J. L., Harrison, J., & Keisling, M. (2010). National Transgender Discrimination Survey. Report on health and health care (pp. 1–23). Washington, DC: National Center for Transgender Equality and National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Hey, thanks. I haven’t had a good mental headspace for reading recently, so this is helpful.

Something similar happened to me with a weird crustacean I posted and I was dancing on the wind for weeks

Imagine seeing an insect - it happens all the time, not a rare or wondrous occasion by any general sense, yet… Between 15,000 and 18,000 new species are identified each year, half of those discoveries being insects.

That spider in your home, could be unidentified, new. The flies on your windshields, fresh creations.

Years ago I found a huge grub in a friends garden. Took it home in a jar speared with a fork for breathing holes. Put it in a bowl of dirt - Moth larvae will bury underground to metamorphosize - I carefully dug into the dirt when the leaves were falling. A beautiful umber leathery cocoon sat, quietly greeting me. All winter I kept it inside, warm. Carefully moved from one room to another. Come spring, I thought they would not come out. Come summer, I was left with a casing I thought empty. One night, one breathtaking night, a moth larger than my partner’s hand, or mine appeared. The Pandora Sphinx Moth was free, and she spread her wings and took to the night sky. I never knew a moth like her could exist in Colorado.

At any given moment, it’s estimated there are 10 quintillion individual insects alive. Be curious! Who knows what we will discover next. There in your backyard, local park, leaflitter in the city, some new, wonderous thing lives.

So I just discovered that not only some of the Greek books that I own are over 200 years old, they also belonged to someone famous?!

Here are the books in question:

image

They are a collection of Sophocles’ seven surviving plays, in Ancient Greek, with no translation. None of them have publishing dates, but the typography is clearly old - notice the use of ϖ for π:

image

(Notice, also, the handwritten corrections by one of the book’s owners.)

All three books have names inscribed in the front. The first volume has this one:

image

Boissier is an old and eminent family in Geneva, Switzerland, which just happens to be where I found these books. The volume may have been owned by Adélaïde Boissier (1799-1857) or by one of her parents. Either way, the person who penned the inscription must have lived around 1800 at the latest; the long S (ſ, used here to spell Boiſsier) went out of fashion in French in the early 19th century.

Adélaïde Boissier married Charles Gautier. The books passed down to their children, as evidenced by the signature in the second volume:

image

This would be Émile Gautier (1822-1891), a Swiss astronomer who studied under Urbain Le Verrier, one of the scientists credited with the discovery of Neptune. Given the date (1839), it is likely that Émile was given this book while studying Ancient Greek at school. He would’ve been seventeen years old at the time.

Émile gave the books to his son Lucien (1850-1924), who was rather more fond of doodling:

image

This was in 1866; Lucien Gautier was sixteen years old. He would later go on to become a protestant theologian and the professor of Hebrew in Lausanne. Notice that there is another name and date in the corner of the page: I’m struggling to read the surname, but it seems to be Adolphe Boissier, 1812. This gives us the latest possible year these books could have been published - over two centuries ago.

The text is also interspersed with a few doodles, which also seem to be Lucien’s:

Who the books went to after him, I have no idea. All I know is that eventually, they found themselves in the private library of a man who donated it to the University of Geneva in his old age. His Ancient Greek books were distributed to anyone who wanted them, for free… and that’s how these small pieces of history came to me.

26.10.21|Hey, guys! I reviewed a bit of history (actually, last week I just studied history and geography). These annotations are old, currently I’m trying to write on the tablet. I have a samsung tablet released in 2015 that keeps working (I really don’t know how to, haha) and found a PERFECT annotations app called touch notes. I think it’s the best app of its kind I’ve used in all these years and it’s still free! Do you usually take digital notes? What do you think about that? I know a lot of people criticize, but with this app it really looks like I’m writing on a sheet hahaha

30.09.2019 | Hello, everybody! All right? I had a super intense week because I had the proof of the bimester. Today I received the constitutional law test and I took a maximum note, I was very happy! Then I studied Civil law when I got home. Besides, I’ve decided I m gonna make my notes more on tablet than on paper. It’s more sustainable and more practical, too!

15.09.2019 | Hi, guys! Sorry I didn’t post anything, but it’s all very racing around here! I’ve had an interview for a internship at the Ministry of human rights and I m very anxious to know whether I’m gonna get the internship or not! Besides, I had two tests, one of Civil law and another philosophy of law. I went right in Civil law, but I haven’t gotten the results of the right philosophy test. I’ll try to post more stuff around here, Haha!

If hiatto’s bothering you, you can follow me on my Instagram! It’s @estudeasy and there I put stuff in the stories every day!

22.8.2019 | Good night, everybody! Today I went to college and had civil law and philosophy law school. Philosophy class was very boring, but it was compensated by Law School Civil that was super interesting! When I came home I gave a nap, because I was really tired, and when I woke up I still studied philosophy. It was a long time since I was studying this article, so I took advantage of trying to put it in the day. ( I couldn’t, but I ll try to finish it even this week, only twenty pages left)
