Nao moves from the U.S back to Japan, where she was born, to study Japanese for a year between high school and college. She lives in shared housing with four others: Hyejung, from South Korea, who is studying for university entrance exams in Japan; Tina from Singapore who is doing the same; and two young Japanese dudes, the friendly Shinichi and very quiet Masaki. As Nao reconnects with her childhood self and tries to figure out if she’s gaijin or Japanese, the five form the type of fast, deep friendships that can only happen when everyone is in a new place, trying to help each other. (The other characters inner live are explored a bit in the book, too.) The story includes crushes, holiday parties, karaoke, part-time jobs, a charming grandma who lives down the street, and the best use of accented English I’ve ever seen in a book.

Worth noting: When the characters speak a language other than English, the language is in the word balloons along with English. It makes for a great chance to practice another language if you know a little of it, and it’s so much better than putting translated language in English between << brackets like this >>, which is what I saw in a lot of comics when I was a kid.

Becker previously drew George Takei’s graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy.

oh, how i miss the canadian winter ❄️

26.10.21|Hey, guys! I reviewed a bit of history (actually, last week I just studied history and geography). These annotations are old, currently I’m trying to write on the tablet. I have a samsung tablet released in 2015 that keeps working (I really don’t know how to, haha) and found a PERFECT annotations app called touch notes. I think it’s the best app of its kind I’ve used in all these years and it’s still free! Do you usually take digital notes? What do you think about that? I know a lot of people criticize, but with this app it really looks like I’m writing on a sheet hahaha

20.10.21 | Hi guys, I have been away for a long period of time. With the pandemic, I decided to take a break from my social networks, but now I’m back with news! I dropped out of law school to do medical school! Medicine has always been my passion and I want to chase my dream! For now, I am still doing the selection processes to enter the universities, here in Brazil everyone who leaves high school must do these selection processes that we call “vestibular”. The exam to enter a medical university is usually very difficult and competitive, so I will show you my study routine here!

Note: I don’t use instagram anymore, which means I’ll be much more active on tumblr and sorry for bad english haha

30.09.2019 | Hello, everybody! All right? I had a super intense week because I had the proof of the bimester. Today I received the constitutional law test and I took a maximum note, I was very happy! Then I studied Civil law when I got home. Besides, I’ve decided I m gonna make my notes more on tablet than on paper. It’s more sustainable and more practical, too!

15.09.2019 | Hi, guys! Sorry I didn’t post anything, but it’s all very racing around here! I’ve had an interview for a internship at the Ministry of human rights and I m very anxious to know whether I’m gonna get the internship or not! Besides, I had two tests, one of Civil law and another philosophy of law. I went right in Civil law, but I haven’t gotten the results of the right philosophy test. I’ll try to post more stuff around here, Haha!

If hiatto’s bothering you, you can follow me on my Instagram! It’s @estudeasy and there I put stuff in the stories every day!

22.8.2019 | Good night, everybody! Today I went to college and had civil law and philosophy law school. Philosophy class was very boring, but it was compensated by Law School Civil that was super interesting! When I came home I gave a nap, because I was really tired, and when I woke up I still studied philosophy. It was a long time since I was studying this article, so I took advantage of trying to put it in the day. ( I couldn’t, but I ll try to finish it even this week, only twenty pages left)

18.08.2019 | Hello, guys! I took this photo from the study session yesterday. Today I’m studying philosophy and responding to a questionnaire for tomorrow. I hope to finish this afternoon so I can study civil law and uncutting a little bit. I’m pretty tired of just studying philosophy, so I m taking a few pauses with the Pomodoro method. I find this very tiring matter, but I need to finish the questionnaire.

26.07.19 That’s a post I made for instagram with nominations of film and series of Netflix to see on vacation. I’m not going to study during this week because my classes start on Wednesday, but today I m going to an art show with my boyfriend, it’s our dating anniversary and I m really looking forward to it!

The movies and series that I put in was:

• What Happened to Monday

• The Whole Truth

• Patch Adams

• Captain Fantastic

• The Shawshank Redemption

• Fences

• Stranger Things

• You

• The Alienist

• The Good Place

• Coisa mais Linda

• Black Spot

NEW SERIES

I’ve gotten several messages asking about studying in Aberdeen and in the UK in general (which are always very welcome!), so I thought I would start a new series in which I chat a bit about my experience and answer some questions.

I’ll start off with one of the most common question I get:

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN?

To give a bit of background, I am from the United States and have no family in or any personal connection with the UK. So choosing to study abroad may seem like an odd choice. To be quite honest, I never had a strong desire to study in Scotland; the opportunity arose and I thought: why not? Looking back on my decision, I probably should have thought more about it, though I don’t regret it for a second. Moving to a foreign country is difficult (cultural differences, currency change, distance from loved ones, etc.) but it is so worth it.

One thing that drew me to Aberdeen Uni was the linguistics department. I was lucky enough to meet one of the lecturers on a tour of the campus, Dr Robert Millar, and from there on I was sold. I have honestly loved every single one of my lecturers. And it doesn’t hurt that it is one of the best linguistics departments in the UK after Oxbridge.

Aberdeen Uni also has a beautiful campus. There are, like most unis, plenty of ugly, brutalist buildings but they’re made up for by King’s College and Sir Duncan Rice Library, amongst several others. Its nearby to the beach and Seaton Park, so you’re not entirely surrounded by ‘city.’ At the heart of Old Aberdeen, Aberdeen Uni is away from the bustling madness of the city centre, but not so far that you can’t enjoy the museums, shops, and restaurants that line Union Street. Is Aberdeen the prettiest city in Scotland? Probably not. It has a great deal of gray buildings and is primarily an industrial city. But there is also a great deal of beauty in it as well (as I hope my blog attests to!).

In short, would I recommend Aberdeen Uni? Absolutely!

11.12.2019

Why is it always nothing due or 7 assignments due in a week? Seriously they need to spread out more, they are killing me right now. And please save me in organic chemistry, I swear I would cry in happiness even if I barely pass.

i visited the small island of Sifnos in Greece. After 4 days on the island (which was empty bc i accidentally went during their off-season), the locals made me a cake for my birthday & surprised me with my friends at a restaurant. despite language barriers, there was love, friendship, & kindness.  people are GOOD.
