Between Sleep and Awake - {20} Butterflies

Bella Rosenthorn’s life was going perfectly according to plan. She was popular, smart, adored by everyone who met her. Everything seemed perfect; until the night that a drunken car ride almost takes her life. Stuck in a coma at the hospital and seemingly hopeless, Bella is pulled into the world of her subconscious. There, she meets Julian, an exuberant and reckless boy who exposes her to a life beyond her imagination. Through him, Bella is introduced to the Street Soldiers, a group of teenagers who never have to grow up and never plan on it. However, a darkness lurks on the edges, as the malevolent Morpheus continuously torments Julian and the other Soldiers.

Meanwhile, back in the waking world, lanky teen Hogan Barrie fights to keep Bella on life support and bring her back to the land of the living. Bella, Julian and Hogan must face the struggles of love, war, life and eventually learn what is the true essence of youth.

Suburbia - {1} Abditory

Holden didn’t even have to check the time to know it was exactly 3:27, as the tell tale scream of the oncoming train reverberated through the previously calm woods. He saw it as if in slow motion as the boy lifted his arms out to his sides and began to lean forward, slowly, as if suspended there. He wondered if this is what Apollo saw in the seconds before Icarus fell.

A scream may have left his lips, maybe, Holden wasn’t sure, but he was sure that something had taken over his body and suddenly he was lunging across the leaf-covered ground that separated them, his fist curling tightly into the back of Icarus’ green hoodie. Knuckles white, Holden wrenched them both to the ground. He landed harshly on the dirt, his breath being knocked from him as Icarus’ head landed right above his heart with a pained groan and he should have known then that he was totally and completely fucked.

 ~~~
In a two square mile town bordered by mountains on every side, one car tunnel the only way in or out, there are not a lot of places to run. Which means when Holden Mezanotte and Adrian Forrester find their lives colliding at breakneck speed, there is nothing they can do to stop it. Aided by their friends and the eccentric town they grew their roots in, Holden and Adrian will battle depression, homophobia, and all the heartaches of growing up.
This coming of age tale explores the challenges facing two queer teenagers in a world in which hate seems to win. But the small New Jersey town of Suburbia is a world of its own.
Yes you read that correctly! If you want a story that’s funny, unique, and has a little Dwayne Johnson love, then this is the book for you! It is a self-discovery, LGBTQ novel about a teenage girl who wants to be just like Dwayne Johnson. Chapter One has been released on Wattpad, so follow the link below and enjoy!
Summary: "While girls my age are more into Shawn Mendes, Tom Holland, shopping, nails, getting their hair done, getting to that 1k follower status on social media, I’ve decided a whole new course for me to take. I am into sports, getting my hands dirty, wrestling, and…oh, yeah, Dwayne Johnson!“
*
Seventeen year old Harper Leavings is anything but your typical teenage girl. She’s a total tomboy, and very proud of this. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and doesn’t shy away from her beliefs. Her mother tries relentlessly to have her daughter conform to the girly ways while her dad embraces his daughter’s spitfire personality.
All the while, Harper has one goal in mind: to become just like Dwayne Johnson.
To Harper he is like god reincarnate. He’s strong, an impressive wrestler, and a rather funny actor. Not to mention he’s managed to charm the world with his lovable, charismatic personality. It’s something her mom finds absolutely exhausting and embarrassing, while her dad just laughs it off and gives her a pat on the back.
But when Harper meets and begins to fall for the mysterious new girl, Juniper, Harper realizes that maybe she doesn’t need to become like Dwayne Johnson to find her way in this chaotic world.
Excerpt: "You think it’s reckless,“ the older boy said after a moment.
With a sigh, Will glanced at his friend and shrugged. "I just have a feeling…something bad is going to happen.” He pointed to his stomach. “I feel it in my gut.”
Wyatt frowned. “I have to try.”
Symptoms of Being Human
by Jeff Garvin
When you start any novel, what do you notice first about the narrator? I imagine concurrent to style of voice, you make immediate assumptions about gender. I, in fact, often actively search for narrators of a certain gender. I imagine there are some readers out there that actively avoid narrators of a certain gender. Actually, the old chestnut that they like to sell writers is that girls will read stories about boys and girls, but boys are only interested in stories about boys. #alternativefact
So, then, what do you do when the narrator’s answer to “boy or girl” is a simple nod?
Riley is starting at a new high school halfway through the four arduous years, a terrifying plight for any narrator, but exacerbated more acutely by the fact that Riley identifies as “gender fluid,” -  as male or female or anywhere along the spectrum on any given day.  Compound this situation by a congressman father running for re-election and an accidental fame-by-blog-post scenario and you’ve got the makings of a modern cyber hero - and heroine - tale.
The book came out five minutes ago and has already been recognized as a 2017 Best Fiction for Young Adults Selection by American Library Association, among Most Anticipated Debuts by Barnes & Noble, and in 5 YA Novels You Need to Read in the First Half of 2016byHuffington Post. The list of notable mentions is exhaustively long this far. And why?
Well, it’s a fun read to be sure, but what is perhaps most notable about this book is that like all good fiction, it manages to implicate the reader in its exploration. Heck, the gender-fluid narrator is even self-critical. Why are we all so eager to categorize? To label? To break down? Is a thing defined less scary? More relatable? Or is it simply habit? A result of a lifetime of pronouns we’ve been fed and regurgitated? Or, it is more insidious? Is it segregated children’s toy aisles and blue and pink cake reveals and seventy-seven cents on the dollar? Why do we see the world how we do, and why do we cling so ferociously to our arbitrary classifications?
Symptoms of Being Human is destined to join the ranks of the young modern underdog tales like Wonder, Eleanor & Park,andCurious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. It’s a story we’ve never heard before from a narrator we didn’t know we needed - a narrator who invites us to see the world from a slightly less-defined perspective.
Writing advice you will probably hate:
▪️DO NOT edit until after your work in progress is finished
Reasons:
1. You will quench your creative flow
2. You will get frustrated
3. It will take 10 years to finish your book and you will still hate it.
4. You’ll beat yourself up
5. editing is more productive once your work is finished.
Ways to avoid this:
1. Keep writing and don’t look back
2. Finish from beginning to literally “the end”
3. Remember, becoming a good writer isn’t magically writing everything perfect the first time around. It’s learning to edit. And edit. And edit again.
Don’t worry, you got this!☺️
Author’s Note (Please Read!)
So I have an announcement before I fly across the country to stay with my aunt for a week,
I am writing another story!
It’s called Big Changes, and it is teen fiction, not fanfiction. I’ve decided to step out of my comfort zone of writing fanfiction, and start to write a teen fiction book.
I will still be continuing to write Dollhouseas well as this.
I will be posting the first chapter shortly after I post this, so I would really appreciate it if you guys went and checked it out, I am super excited for it.
Here is the synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Farley Faust goes through some big changes in her life. One of those changes is meeting Aster Fox. Now Farley has to decide if that change is good or not.
I love you all so much, so I am going to give you a sneak peak of the first chapter! Here it is:
          What is it about human nature, that causes people feel the need to tell lies? Is it the fear of the truth being known? Is making something up, somehow better than the reality of the actual situation? Or is it simply the satisfaction of knowing that someone believed you, when what you told them was far from the truth? That is a question, I may never have an answer to.
          The definition of a lie, according to Google, is; An intentionally false statement, used with reference to a situation involving deception founded on a mistaken impression. Even if the lie is a small one, it’s still deceiving, and based on a mistaken impression. A lie is a lie, no matter how serious it is.
          Is not telling someone something, which they deserves to know, considered lying? Or is it just considered not telling them one thing that happened?
          “Alright class, that’s all we’re going to be able to work on today. We’ll continue this tomorrow,” My English teacher, Mr. Wilson announces. I’m disappointed, because I was just starting to get my flow of writing going.
          Every few weeks Mr. Wilson has us write an essay on something interesting to us. I’ve taken this assignment—that other students might dread—and have learned to look forward to it. I find something in my everyday life, which interests me. Even if it’s a little thing, such as gum chewing, or knuckle popping.
          Lately I’ve been noticing just how much people lie. Whether it be about if they completed their homework,  if they’d watched that movie, or if they liked that song. Lying is an interesting thing, and it’s something that can cause incredible pain. That’s something that terrifies me.
There it is! If you’d like to read more, head on over to my wattpad account, and start reading Big Changes!
Thank you, and I love you all so much.
I had a dream that I wrote a book and it was a brilliant piece of literature and massively popular among teenagers but I described the main character as ‘an alien with caucation features but with unnaturally jet black skin’ and no film studio could ever adapt it and profit off it as it would require their lead actor to black face.
