Speakers or learners of either language often find that some words look similar in both languages. However, there are several words that are false friends in Ukrainian for those familiar with Russian. Here are ten of them.
1. містоmistaken for место
місто (city) in Ukrainian is город in Russian.
место (place) in Russian is місце in Ukrainian.
2.неділя mistaken for неделя
неділя (Sunday) in Ukrainian is воскресенье in Russian.
неделя (week) in Russian is тиждень in Ukrainian.
3. гарбуз mistaken for арбуз
гарбуз (pumpkin) in Ukrainian is тыква in Russian.
арбуз (watermelon) in Russian is кавун in Ukrainian.
4.часmistakenforчас
час (time) in Ukrainian is время in Russian.
час(hour) in Russian is година in Ukrainian.
5. чоловік mistaken for человек
чоловік (husband) in Ukrainian is муж in Russian.
человек (man, human) in Russian is людина in Ukrainian.
6.жінкаmistaken for жена
жінка (woman) in Ukrainian is женщина in Russian.
жена (wife) in Russian is дружина in Ukrainian.
7. онmistaken forон
он (there) in Ukrainian is вон in Russian.
он (he) in Russian is вiн in Ukrainian.
8. кітmistaken for кит
кіт (cat) in Ukrainian is кот in Russian.
кит (whale) in Russian is кит in Ukrainian.
9.їх mistaken for их(in certain cases)
їх (them) in Ukrainian is их in Russian when referring to the declension of вони.
их (their) in Russian is їхній in Ukrainian when referring to possession. There is a Russian word that isn’t used as much, ихний, that corresponds to this.
10.листопадmistaken for листопад
листопад (November) in Ukrainian is ноябрь in Russian.
листопад (defoliation) in Russian is листопад in Ukrainian.
There are more false friends, but I wanted to keep this list short. Feel free to add more if you speak both languages :)
Merry Christmas season everyone! Unfortunately I didn’t get around to doing much Christmas crafting this year. However, I did manage to come up with at least one project. This is an 18x28″ red cloth. It just so happened on Facebook one day in my “memories” news feed a very old Ukrainian art pic of a deer showed up. “Wow” I thought, that would make a perfect Christmas project. So off to amazing land I went. I popped the pic into my favorite website blockposters.com and made it super big to fit my cloth. Then I taped those 4 sheets of paper together and traced the whole thing onto tissue paper which I then attached to my cloth. The whole thing is nothing but chain stitch done with white Pearl thread (a little thicker than your typical DMC thread). Unfortunately I didn’t note the entire name of the artist on the original pic I had. I just have “Panchenko” so if you’re Ukrainian and you know the artist, please do let me know so I can give their full name. The pic was from a very old book printed in Soviet times. I think it will make a lovely addition to my Christmas table.
I see why this post emerged, and there is obviously no way of judging the past by the standards of the current days. But… Just for the reference.
Dostoyevsky hated Ukraine, thought that Ukrainian people are not in any forms allowed to have their own country and independence, mocked our language and was envious when Taras Shevchenko, prominent Ukrainian poet who also by the way was in labour camp in much much much worse conditions, was praised more than Fyodor Mikhailovych himself at a party amongst writers.
I don’t say that we should burn Tolstoy’s or Turgenev’s books just because 21st century Russians burn our houses, hospitals and schools. It’s just a… timing problem, huh?.. I can’t imagine Italian students cosily reading about the glory of Russian nation and their right to kill whomever they fucking want in the name of God and emperor (all of these ideas presented in almost ALL Dostoyevsky’s text, except for a single one novella he wrote BEFORE labour camp) right now, when these notions led millions of people to justify the bloodshed.
So… I don’t know, guys… If the whole world continues reading Russian classics without any critical judgment and only with blind praise, maybe one day Russian propagandists will “find” something in “Crime and Punishment” or “War and Peace” about Milan being inherently bound with Moscow and decide to send there some tanks just to show their respect and friendship.

Volker tells a top aide to Zelensky it’s imperative that Zelensky say he is announcing the investigations, if he wants a visit to Washington. Zelensky then speaks with Trump on the telephone, saying he wants to continue military cooperation with America and that “we are almost ready to buy” more anti-tank missiles. Trump responds that “I would like you to do us a favor though,” and lists the investigations he wants. Ukrainian officials in Washington immediately raise questions with U.S. officials about the status of the military aid.

Taras ShevchenkoMonument(1814 - 1861) in Warsaw. It commemorates the Ukrainian national poet’s stay in Poland in 1830. Shevchenko was convicted by the Russians in 1847 for writing poetry in Ukrainian and promoting the idea of Ukraine’s independence.
The war in Ukraine has led Poles to reconsider how they say “in Ukraine”.
■ There has been a shift away from the traditional “na Ukrainie” (which some believe makes a country seem more provincial) and towards “w Ukrainie” (which they argue better emphasizes independence).
My heart is heavy for Ukraine today. As always, it feels absurd to go about my normal life when others’ lives are being torn apart by the ravages of war and imperialism.
I did not post anything because I was busy with one project. It was two weeks ago. Since then the reason why I did not post anything has changed. I am shocked and terrified by the current situation in Ukraine. I do not want to spread aggression, threat, anxiety but I also have the urge to express very clearly I am against war (yes, it is war regardless what Russian government says) and I support Ukraine and the whole world.
I am asking anyone who has this opportunity please donate money, clothes, drugs, food to Ukrainians. Anyone in Europe please be kind and patient. Currently there are thousands of refugees are trying to arrive to your countries. Please help as much as you can. Please don’t spread your aggression against innocent people even if they have passports from Russia or Belarus. I am in Warsaw and see how hate against those people in Poland is growing. They do not support their government. They moved to Europe because they wished a better life for themselves and their families. We are living in the dark time so please be kind and smart.
