I’ve discussed warding and covered the basics, but now lets get in to some practical techniques your protecting yourself, your home, and your family.
This is going to be a long one, so buckle up.
Iron: A powerful tool against fey, most other spirits, and against evil and malevolent spells.
- Sew bits of iron (such as nails) into the hems of your clothes. Only works while wearing those clothes.
- Wear an iron ring or bracelet.
- Wrap an iron coffin nail in brown silk and carry it with you for protection against curses.
Wearing a pentacle is another simple protective practice amongst witches. The pentacle represents the five (yes, five) elements of fire, water, earth, air and akasha (spirit). Therefore, a pentacle provides the protection of all of these elements. Water guards your emotions. Air guards your intellect. Fire guards against actions brought against you. Earth guards against physical harm (especially physical harm from magickal sources). Akasha obviously guards against negative energies and spirits.
Circles
Circles are also powerful protective symbols. An unbroken circle can be designated as a “safe-zone”, allowing only that which is allowed into it. Of course, this is best used when practicing magick, as the raising of energy can occasional attract the wrong kind of attention. However, only those energies that have been specifically invited into a circle are welcome to stay.
I like to use the elemental method, instructions for which are here!
Circles, however, can be cast with a number of different things:
- Chalk
- Charcoal
- Salt
- Fiery Wall of Protection powder
- Red brick dust
- Vervain
- Vermilion
- Whiskey
- Rum
- Flour
There is much more, but these are some basics. You can also cast invisible circles using a wand or Athame (Made of iron or steel is best).
When and where to cast a circle:
- Draw circles during rituals and spells.
- Draw circles around sickbeds
- Draw circles around women in childbirth
- Draw circles around your own bed, and the especially the beds of infants and young children.
Salt
Salt is a powerful protective tool. Salt represents the earth, and therefore also represents that Earth Mother. Salt is also cleansing, and repels malevolent spirits.
Sage your home often, cleansing it of negativity, being sure to leave a window open for the negativity to escape. Be sure to get in corners and in low places as well as in high places. When finished, close the window, and then pour salt on all window ledges and in front of all outside doors. Natural sea salt works best. I also, for added protection, draw a pentacle with my wand over the doors and windows.
Re-do this once a month for best results.
Spiritual Protection
Spirit guardians and guides serve as excellent protection against anything unwanted. However, do not make the mistake of thinking their protection is good enough. It is absolutely essential to learn how to protect yourself instead of relying solely on your spirit guide to do it.
Your Spirit animal/familiar may also provide protection to you as well. Usually, your spirit animal isusually separate from your spirit guardian. For example: My spirit animal is a Wolf, but my Spirit Guardian’s animal (yes, spirit guardians have spirit animals too) is an Owl.
There are also more advanced theories of magick such as thoughtformsandtulpas that are created with a certain purpose. Usually these spirits are created within your own astral temple and then made stronger over time. Again, this is advanced magickal theory.
NOTE: I would not, unless you know exactly what you are doing, enter a contract with any spirit/deity/demon/angel for use as a protective measure. Often, these contracts contain dangerous “clauses” that cause more harm than good.
However, if you happen to have a connection to your spiritual ancestors they are usually willing to provide protection without entering a contract. At the same time, this protection only lasts as long as it suites them. It’s possible that your ancestors are loyal to you. Or it’s possible that they will abandon you the first time danger arises.
Spells and Such For Protection
This list of spells will likely grow over time as I find/write more spells for the purpose of protection.

How A Skeptic Works With Spiritual Beings
Hey there Skeptics! Today I want to talk to you all on how I work with spiritual beings even though I am even skeptical of their existence.
I like to believe in spirits even though I personally have no real evidence. I do have one experience as a child with a spirit, but it could have easily been sleep paralysis. Either way, I find comfort in believing in spirits and a spiritual realm. But as a Skeptic, it’s hard for me to feel comfortable in believing things I don’t have proof of.
I have two techniques I use:
I will use the concept of spiritual beings as symbolism for whatever I am doing.
OR
I will allow myself to suspend my disbelief when I want to work with spirits. Basically, I give myself permission to not hold myself to such a high standard of proof.
It’s possible to work with spiritual beings without totally being convinced they exist. And as long as you aren’t getting hurt or harming innocent people, there really is no problem with suspending your disbelief with it.
What you will need:
- Himalayan Salt
- Honey
- Orange Peel (fresh recommended, but mine are dried)
- Written Spell or Sigil
- Representatives of you (I chose my favorit herb: rosemary, and my favorite tea: peac)
- Yellow Candle
Select a small container or jar, start with your pink salt for the base of the spell. Salt is good for protection during spells, but in this case is especially useful for protecting you from bad people and toxic relationships down the road. Pink specifically corresponds to friendship and relationships, but white salt can be subsituted!
Next coat your salt in honey to attract a well caring person to your life.
Roll up your written spell or sigil (this can be anything from a small poem to a list of what youre longing for) and dip it into the honey. I also recommend writting your spell in yellow or pink.
Add orange peels to symbolize change im relationships and finish the contents with things you correspond with. This may be things such as your favorite herbs, tea, crystals, flowers, dried fruit… something that another person can be attracted to you specifically by.
Lastly seal your jar with a yellow candle. Yellow is a very strong correspondent with friendship, but pink will work aswell, or all purpose white! If you can’t burn candles tie a ribbon around your jar.
Let the jar charge.
Hide the jar somewhere special to you: in your locker, dresser, make up drawer, behind your favorite books on your book case, in the soil of your favorite plant… etc.

- Lunar Magic
- Spells
- Also: Spirit Work
We can read the world around as a tapestry of symbols and divination messages.
Yes, we tend to use tools - tarot, oracle, runes, crystal ball, but eventually that all is our aid kit, crunches, radio receiver. We always can get the messages we need without a use of special equipment — directly.
Notes on how to start
- Begin with formulating your question and sending it to the universe, then let yourself forget about that and go about your day. In case you’ve no specific question, set an intention that you’re open to receive messages.
- Relax and have zero expectations, observe everything but without clinging, make all impressions smoothly passing through your senses, so the moment the message comes, intuition will make you to pose.
- Make sure that you read not only the symbol | message but pay attention to its means, ways and context.
- Journal and work with the message to unravel its meaning and to ground the experience.
Your way of receiving messages is absolutely unique and unpredictable, yet here is some suggestions:
Names
- they can draw your attention, they can be common or sound like from somewhere in far galaxy - it doesn’t matter, don’t hesitate to research its meaning
- relate the meaning with aspect of your personality | personality trait or person in your life in present, past or future
- it can be message about energy | situation which is coming
- connect the name meaning or your personal connotation with tarot court cards - it can work magically
- dive deeper if you feel the message resonates with you and research the numerology of name to get wider perspective - life theme, archetypes and core question in play
- pay special attention to context and the most importantly what was your first feeling the moment you encountered that name
Numbers
- repeating numbers, obviously
- flat numbers, bus numbers, phone numbers and whatever - do your numerology
- consider the way the number was delivered to you - three birds might be read as the combination of number three with element of air and consequently - mind, communication, intellect, ideas, decisions
- again this process is very personal and connections you find might exist only for you, still try to research correspondences of the number with astrology, tarot, alchemy, crystals, plants to have a better understanding of energy that the number bears
a little bit more…
Animals
- when you keep meeting particular animal
- or notice that animal behaves in certain way
- study more about that particular animal as totem and spirit guide
- check animal oracles you feel connected with
Phrases
- graffiti, bill boards, ridiculous clothes sayings and shop names - anything can work
- for sure, books can be your divination muse for ever
Colors
- that’s amazing how we fail to see that colors can just shout about changes knocking our door, help us to shift our perspective or heal
- notice color choices of people around: cloths, juice straws, hair bands
- repeatedly appearing color
- connect the color with chakra, check its symbolic and esoteric connotations
More ideas…
Music and songs
Broken or lost objectsMistakes
Unexpected meetings
Your spirit guides are here, right now.
They’re an inevitable part of our existence but we might be still learning to be aware of their presence. Wise advice popped up in your mind, sudden turn to the unknown street to bring you to the amazing place, strange butterfly, symbols hidden in bus numbers.

We’re not supposed to go alone.
Your soul is weaved with all the beings out there - they speak to you, merge with your feelings, guide and bring all of you together, they root for you, love you. They’re your portals and main teachers, your soul family, they can be you.

This spread needs highly intuitive or psychic reading, you’re definitely going to decipher the specific ways the spirit guides use to speak through tarot.
Some ideas to begin with:
Lay down cards 1-9 first and interpret them.
1 - basically this is you, your current state in general or in regard to the spirit guides - your feelings, expectations, attitude.
2-9:
Major Arcana or court cards represents the spirit guides
Minor Arcana cards: all about your connection with the spirit guides (if this is what you’re interested in),
messages for you (especially if you’re asking your guides specific question)
Depending on 1-9 cards, you can lay down a-p cards. Consider to do that especially when there are no spirit guides among 1-9 cards.
a-p cards can be interpreted differently from 1-9 cards, as spiritual work need to be done, challenges to overcome, interference to clear away.
