Hey, lovelies. So here’s the thing: I feel wasteful when it comes to empty prayer candles. Of course, a good way to reuse them would be making more candles from their containers. However, that can be a little expensive and I wanted some alternative uses. I thought about it for a while, even googling if anyone had any ideas. Nothing stuck out to me and for weeks I had this empty cylinder on my dresser staring me in the eye. Yesterday, it randomly hit me and I started my crafting. Honestly, this one is really simple like most of my crafts I’ve shown you guys and inexpensive.

I decided to turn it into a wand holder or a incense stick holder, it could be used for both. I even thought about putting it in the kitchen for spoons and things if you’re a kitchen witch. I decided to made the cylinder a tree trunk with roots at the bottom. Another idea I thought of was making a squid which might be neat for a sea witch but more difficult.

What I used:

  • an empty and clean prayer candle
  • air dry clay
  • clear quartz and amethyst
  • glitter
  • glossy mod podge
  • a mechanical pencil
  • acrylic paint and paint brushes

I didn’t really want to do a brown tree trunk, I decided on purple even though I didn’t have enough purple paint. I mixed together Apple Barrel’s Cool Blue and Flag Red in case the color is something you specifically want. In the pictures, it looks kind of brown though. The crystals are optional and you can replace them with anything you want. My glitter, prayer candle, and mod podge were all from Dollar Tree. My air dry clay is by Crayola and was about 5 dollars and from Walmart. My paint was also from Walmart.

First things first, I covered the entire container in clay, smoothing it out a little. I took a mechanical pencil to create the texture of the trunk by just drawing and making lines randomly (later I’d gently do the same for the roots). At the bottom, I started the roots which were my biggest hurdle. I made some of my roots more intricate and tiny and as a result they did come off and I had to fix them. I let the clay dry before mixing my paint and painting it all the dark purple. After some time drying again, I mixed together pink glitter, silver glitter, and mod podge. I painted on the mod podge and let it dry again. Lastly, I took my crystals and wrapped more clay around them and on the very back to place them against the trunk. After letting that dry, I repeated the painting process and added the mod podge. Some more time drying (whew) and I was done! Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

PILE ONE (left)

ace of swords, three of cups

  • spend time with people who are important to you, whether that means quality time with friends, or going to parties and socialising. either way, you should be around those who support and care for you. you may also find joy and peace in creating and sharing your ideas, as well as gaining new understandings and perspectives on what is happening around you.

PILE TWO (middle)

ten of cups, the tower

  • a lot of your happiness lies with your relationships, friendships and family. when your connections are strong and you feel supported you are always vibrating at the highest frequency you can be. sometimes the universe takes us out of situations because we wouldn’t have removed ourselves from it. however there may need to be some kind of change -maybe even in a seemingly negative way- in order to put on the right path in the right direction.

PILE THREE (right)

the sun, the moon

  • this is a sign that you need to focus on where you want to succeed and find joy instead of on any negatives. there may also be some things you are unclear about or don’t have a full understanding of yet. the thing you don’t know might even be what makes you happy - you could be feeling really unsure because there are things that are yet to be uncovered.

Quick tip for anyone using a crystal ball, or someone who just has one in general, if you’re not using it, cover it. This is so that it doesn’t catch the sunlight in the wrong way and light something on fire. So many witches don’t know this and it’s pretty important. It could literally burn down your house. Try to cover it with a thicker cloth, or just don’t leave it in the sun, but please, cover it. Blessed be!

5 things you SHOULD do on Friday 13th

We’ve taken a look at the history and it’s actually the perfect day for a few behaviours

Whether or not you believe in the superstition of Friday 13th, it’s still a date that can send a shiver through your plans thanks to the attention and hype the ancient ‘unlucky’ date has built-up over the years.

But should we approach it with fear, or should we use it to our advantage and make a few different decisions? Country Living took a look at the history and have come up with five detoxing and rather enjoyable things which are best done on Friday 13th.

WHY IS FRIDAY 13TH CONSIDERED UNLUCKY?

The superstition dates back to the urban legends of the 1600s and, to understand it properly, we need to look at the day Friday and the number 13 separately.

So, why Friday? Steve Roud, author of The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland (£2.96, Amazon), explained to the BBC:

“Because Friday was the day of the crucifixion, Fridays were always regarded as a day of penance and abstinence,” he says.

“This religious belief spilled over into a general dislike of starting anything - or doing anything important - on a Friday.”

AND WHAT ABOUT THE NUMBER 13?

Well, back in the 1690s, an urban legend began to bubble that it was unlucky to have 13 people sat around a dinner table as this was the amount of people present at the Last Supper. It was also believed to be the number of witches needed to officially make a coven.

How did the two come together? “The Victorians who were intrigued by folklore put Friday and 13 together and created a doubly unlucky day,” by the author of the Country Wisdom and Folklore Diary.

5 things we should do on Friday 13th

1. Disregard the 'unlucky’ part

When legends like this circulate, it’s easy to blame anything negative that happens on that day on the ideas. If your car won’t start today or you put salt instead of sugar in your tea, blame coincidence.

2. Have an alcohol-free day

In the spirit of abstinence, and the fact that Christmas is soon approaching and will bring with it platefuls of indulgence, why not have a day without your favourite tipple. Instead, enjoy a soft alternative or hygge-inspired hot chocolate.

3. Write a list

We love a list - normally of the shopping to to-do variety – but, on a day when people were originally not meant to start something new, let’s use this time to sit back, relax, and think about things we would like to start in the future.

Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to try? A place you’ve always wanted to travel to? Or simply a walk you haven’t trodden yet? Make a bucket list, stick it on the fridge and commit to ticking them off when you can. Just because we shouldn’t do, doesn’t mean we can’t plan.

4. Take a moment to feel grateful

While you relax, soft drink in hand, thinking about the exciting activities you plan to do, also take a moment to appreciate what you have already done and the smile-inducing things in your life. Not having to worry about witches and penance should probably be top of the list…

5. Procrastinate

It’s probably not a behaviour we are used to but, on a day when urban legend tells us not to do anything important, let’s give it a go. Clean the oven tomorrow, sort out the post on Sunday and save the hoovering for the morning. Just sit, relax and be mindful.

So don’t take that date to seriously…

Have a Happy Friday the 13th

Knopper Gall Ink

There are a huge number of galls that can form on Oak trees and I’ve come across a few.

The ones I’m interested in are the large ones, the Marble Gall, Oak Apple Gall and Knopper Gall.

All of which are reportedly high in tannins and can be used to create a black ink that I feel would make a wonderful addition to my spell work.

As I don’t have enough of the more traditionally used Marble Galls I thought I would try it with Knoppers which have been plentiful enough last year that I could give it a good try and not have to worry if I had to start over as I’ve picked up more this year to dry.

The method of creating the ink comes in stages so I’ve started with the longest process.

You will need…

- Rain Water

- Oak Knopper Galls (Dried for 6-12 months)

- Pestle & Mortar

- Jars with lids

- Vinegar

- Steel wool

- Gum Arabic

- Coffee filter or cheesecloth

- Glass pen or brush (not fountain/nibbed)

Extracting the Tannins

Remove the galls from the acorn host and clean off any dirt or debris especially if they have been collected from the muddy ground.

Using a pestle and mortar or bag and mallet, crush the galls. They do not have to be ground up but chunky pieces.

Remove any unwanted materials including any remaining larvae.

Put the crushed galls into a jar and add enough rainwater to cover them. Tannins will begin to leach out into the water almost immediately.

Place the jar in a sunny spot and leave for 10 days, shake occasionally if you feel like it.

Making the Iron Sulphate

Add a good lump of steel wool onto a jar and pour in the vinegar (this can be a cheap malt vinegar)

Place the lid on lightly and set aside with the gall solution.

…WAIT 10 DAYS…

Making the Ink

You should now have a dark brown solution in the jar with the galls.

Strain the solution using a filter into another clean jar.

Repeat this process again with the steel wool/vinegar solution but make sure it’s into a clean jar and use a new filter!

Take the jar which you would like to hold your ink and add in equal measures the two solutions before adding in a small amount of the Gum Arabic and stir to help it dissolve, more can be added if required.

You should be left with a dark brown to black solution that you can now use as ink!
