There’s this obsession in Paganism about sex. It’s gone past the positive goal of mitigating the sex-negative culture of the West, replacing the idea of sex and taboo with the idea that sex is totally cool, and to the level where sex is an integral part of life. Which sounds great, until you remember that no, sex isn’t integral to life on the small scale. For the species, yes, it is necessary. But for individuals, it is an optional activity. Like carpentry, or cooking. It’s not for everyone.
This idea that sex is universal and needed has infected almost all of Wicca, and a large portion of the rest of the Pagan community. All that talk of “fertility” and “sacred unions” and “great rites” and the like? Yeah, it tells us who are not sexual, or who have less active sex drives, that we’re missing out and not living full lives and we should probably fix that. That tendency to reduce things to masculine/feminine based on giving/receiving? Not only is it heterosexist, cisexist„ gender essentialist (and therefore contributing to sexism), and completely blind to kinky sex (some ladies like to penetrate their partner and some gents like to receive thankyouverymuch), but it also reminds those of us for whom sex is not a foundation of existence that we’re freaks, and our organs have one use and to not use them for that is not participating in the True Pagan Experience. Which is damaging. It doesn’t always actively hurt, but it serves as background radiation, a splinter in our side that leaves us with a low-level of ostracization.
Considering that a large portion of the (non-hereditary) Pagan community converted because here we could find the acceptance that we are denied in mainstream religion and culture, that’s bullshit.
How do we, as a community fix this?
Find other myth cycles, other than hulking man-god fucks nubile lady and then babies, to celebrate seasons. Find ways to delve into fertility and the land’s cycles that don’t revolve around someone fucking, and make these public.
Discuss sacred masturbation as well as sacred sex.
Find or create diverse archetypes of the Divine who don’t partake in sex (recreationally—I want both virgins and archetypes who have had sex and decided they are not interested). Celebrate them, publicly, and mention their non-sexual nature.
Create traditions for Beltaine that aren’t thinly-veiled metaphors for penetrative sex (this also helps reduce the background heterosexism in the community). These traditions could be used for any fertility holiday, but Beltaine is particularly problematic.
Take a breath before connecting non-sentient things with genders. Ask whether that connection needs to be made. How does calling the element Water expand the understanding of that element, and how does it constrain the understanding of it? How does it help, and how does it hurt? Do the positives outweigh the negatives?
Create a holiday to celebrate the previously created asexual Divine archetypes, and do so. Frequently.
Remember that your experience is not universal.
When discussing chakras, remember that the sacral chakra also governs non-sexual experiences, like unconscious desires, emotion, and pleasure. None of those things needs to be sexual.
This sounds like a list of anti-sex things. I am not anti-sex. I am pro-sex. Yay, sex! For other people. Sometimes for me, too, if the boyfriend is over and we’re both feeling horny. But mostly for other people, for any set of consenting adults. I am in no way, shape, or form trying to tell you (the more typically sexual community) that sex is bad, or you should feel guilty for liking sex and integrating sex into your spiritual practice. I am trying to tell you that sex is not everything. It shouldn’t cloud your practice and become anything other than what it is—a tool, an activity, an aspect of your life that is not exactly the same from person to person.
The analogy that I used with my boyfriend today was that sex is like knitting. It’s cool, an interesting activity, which can be used as a magical or spiritual tool, and can be used to create things in the physical plane. But not everyone is a knitter. For me, knitting is something I have zero interest in. I’ve knitted a couple times, but I never really got into it. But I totally support people who like to knit. I might not listen to most knitting stories, but I’ll totally listen to interesting ones. And if for some reason knitting were seen as dirty or taboo, I’d help fight that.
But for knitters of the Pagan community to transform everything in the religion to something somehow knitting-based, and for them to expect that I be interested in knitting, and for the knitters to hijack celebrations of our sort-of-common understanding of the Divine and make them knitting-related, for them to make my Gods about Knitting, is bullshit. Remember that there is more to life than knitting, and it isn’t important, or a fundamental, to everyone. And neither is sex.

Tough times lead to magical measures. Here’s the recipe to my ultimate money jar that’s beginner-friendly.
What you will need
A medium jar with a lid
A green candle
A pen
A bay leaf
A star anise pod
A dollar bill/paper cash
Twine
1 tbs basil
1 tbs cardamom
1 tbs cinnamon
1 tbs ground cloves
1 tbs nutmeg
1 tbs rice
1 tbs sea salt
(Optional: Citrine, Tiger’s Eyes, or Clear Quartz piece)
What you will do
Cleanse your jar and money with your preferred method, then write “financial gain” onto your bay leaf.
Add in your salt, basil, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and rice in that order.
Place your bill flat against the counter and place the bay leaf on top. Roll the bill tightly and tie shut with twine, adding multiple knots. The more knots, the stronger the effect.
Add it into your jar and cap the entire affair, sealing it with green wax.
(If you have a crystal, press it on top of the wax while it’s still hot and let it seal on.)
How to make the most out of it
Magic won’t fix all of your problems. If you work, keep working: this just might help you get a bonus, raise, or large tip from a nice customer.
If you don’t work or if you’re on disability/waiting for disability, seek out ways to try and make a little cash under the table. This just may help you find something for an extra bit of gasoline or pet food. Keep in mind that spell jars are only as powerful as the intentions set behind them!
