We are only 4 DAYS out from the start of filming! To celebrate, we are bringing you 4 ‪#‎browngirls‬ that we are obsessing over: Bethany Thomas,Samantha Jo,Janel Bailey, and Jenn Freeman!!

Samantha Jo: “I want to see us in the most positive light. What does that look like for a woman of color? We need to define that for ourselves. But I feel like we will. I see the revolution coming.”

Bethany Thomas: “There’s an unspoken connection [between women ofcolor]. I feel like I’m a part of something bigger. A lot of us are in situations where we’ve felt like outsiders, but you get to the other side of that eventually, and you realize you are a part of something more.”

Janel Bailey: “I feel like black girls are often overlooked, and when we are included it’s only because we are black. I’d like to see more alternative black girls, black girls who do weird shit, black girls who do roller derby, black girls who date white people and are still black.”

Jenn Freeman: “I am interested in seeing everyday relatable black women in media, like my grandmother and mom– people who are familiar to me. Everyday black women inspire me. Living, surviving, being. You’re on the bus, I’m on the bus. We’re in this together.”

April is #SAAM. We use this time to raise awareness about sexual violence.

My new piece “Carrie and the Cow Tongue” was commissioned by Heather Ross as commemoration of a friend who stood up for her and so many other survivors of sexual assault and violence. Visit my Facebook to find the original post of the piece to read Heather’s amazing story.

For the months of April and May 2019, I am selling both my Carrie pieces online and donating a portion of the sales to the Canadian Women’s Foundation in Carrie’s name.

Please consider sharing this post, telling your friends and loved ones about it, and asking them to tell their friends about it. These special editions will only be available for April and May, so if you want to complete your Carrie collection, this is the time to do so. Every purchase both helps support my art and sends money to an incredibly vital foundation that helps women and girls that need more people like Carrie in their lives.

~~~~~
The Canadian Women’s Foundation is Canada’s public foundation for women and girls. They work to empower more women and girls to move themselves out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership. The Foundation embraces an inclusive definition of “women” and “girls” that includes people who identify as women, girls, trans, genderqueer, and gender non-binary.
