I spent part of the day today spinning photoresist. Photoresists are light sensitive chemicals used in photolithography. They are spun onto the sample at high speeds, using a tool like the one in the picture, to ensure an even coat. Yellow lighting is used in rooms dedicated to resist application and processing to prevent it from getting exposed. Once the resist is applied, a pattern can be transferred to your sample by exposing only certain areas to light.

[SUBMISSION]Some good news! Tl;dr- SWO has been found to break down about 99% of PFAS chemicals and is super viable as a technology to help clean up superfund sites like the Hudson River! We’ve been trying to figure out how to efficiently clean up PFAS for a while now so this is a big deal.
“The findings of all three demonstration studies showed a greater than 99% reduction of the total PFAS […] As a destructive technology, SCWO may be an alternative to incineration and could be a permanent solution for PFAS-laden waters rather than disposal by injection into a deep well or landfilling.”
This is one of those technological breakthroughs that doesn’t sound very exciting on paper but could make a huge difference in cleaning up polluted waterways and improving the surrounding ecosystems.

Here are some pictures that I’ve taken from my past laboratory experiments during the whole foundation year + my first year of BSc (Hons) Biotechnology in university! Had some pictures that are from failed / unsuccessful experiments (ㆀ˘･з･˘)
Every time I see “helpful” posts telling people to mix these things while cleaning I cringe with my entire body.ok kids repeat after me
vinegar and bleach makes chlorine gas, which is highly toxic
ammonia and bleach makes chloramine, which is highly toxic
rubbing alcohol and bleach makes chloroform, which is highly toxic
hydrogen peroxide and vinegar makes peracetic/peroxyacetic acid,which can be highly corrosive
be careful about your cleaning products and dont get yourself injured or potentially killed ok
why it so dangerous to be clean
As someone who’s job is to handle chemicals like this, I need to state that this information is IMPORTANT. Plenty of people have accidentally injured or killed themselves at home because they didn’t know what kind of reaction certain substances have with one another. Play it safe and don’t mix chemicals.
Also don’t use bleach to clean up urine it’ll create chloramine bc of the ammonia in it and you can give yourself chemical pnemonia that way

Never spray weed killer around your plants. Those toxic chemicals seep into our water supply and damage the soil. They can also affect the taste of many plants such as mint, tomatoes, cucumbers etc.
Instead, after you’ve watered your plants pull the weeds out from the root. (pulling them out after the soil has soaked up water makes it much easier to pull the full root out).
Weeding your garden is a great way to understand whats going on with your plants and gives you some quiet alone time to enjoy the progress your plants have made :)

Though it has been on the market since 1987, the popular hair dye product Just for Men® has recently come under legal scrutiny due to reports of severe side effects.
The product’s manufacturer, Combe Brands is currently facing class-action suits from various personal injury firms including Wright & Schulte LLC, The Schmidt Firm PLLC, and Wilson, Kehoe, Wilingham LLC.
The initial legal action against Just for Men® was based on roughly 400 reports of serious chemical burns on the product review website ConsumerAffairs.com.

Element of the week: curium
This week, we meet the element curium, which has the atomic symbol Cmand the atomic number 96. This element was named in honour of Marie and Pierre Curie, who discovered the element, radium. The atomic symbol was chosen because it was the initials used by Marie Curie.
Curium is a dense and hard transuranic element that is silvery-white in appearance. It is very reactive, tarnishing in the presence of oxygen, steam, acids and even dry nitrogen. Thanks to nuclear weapons explosions, tests and accidents, it is present in trace amounts in the wild, although it also can be found in highly-concentrated uranium-containing mineral deposits.
