I was rewatching “His Last Vow”, and I realized of a detail:

It happened the same misunderstanding. I see at least a glimpse of a misunderstanding in the face of Sherlock. John asks for dinner and he makes the same assumption that John makes at the wedding ball:

Dance and dinner, and suddenly, after The Sign of Three, both mean the same for Sherlock: date. There are plenty of metas making a comparison between food and sex. It’s the great metaphor of Moffat’s world and it suddenly means something for Sherlock. John asks for dinner and his reaction is:

image

Remember John’s tremor in his left hand? And the way he moves his hand when he’s nervous or anxious? It’s the same Darcy does it in “Pride and Prejudice”,here.

Also, I wanna add something: a short audio of this scene. It’s a track after John says “OK, talk about the house” when he sees Sherlock a bit shocked about his interest on “Dinner” even when he’s explaining to John everything about Appledore. Here is the audio.

A bit exaggerated and… intense for a subject like this. Sherlock never reacts like that with John, and yet he sighs heavily, even with a bit of frustration.

Some say that Sherlock was trying to get John jealous on purpose. If he wasn´t, why would he lie to John about Janine? He could have perfectly told him his real intentions with her to John, but he didn’t. Sherlock thinks he’s fooling everyone here, including Janine.

LSiT talks about it here.

But no, Sherlock enjoys this, but it kinda runs from his hands when he listens to John asking for “Dinner?”. I can hear him thinking: “What? Did I make you jealous and now you wanna go to dinner? Do you feel something like that for me, John? It would be so soon, I’m scared, I’m terrified?…. Oh, dinner with you and Mary… oh, it’s nothing. It’s… nothing. I’m relieved. But I feel so empty… suddenly (sighs)”.

I mean, let’s give a look to Sherlock’s facial reactions. The first one, when he listens  to John asking for dinner:

And then after John quits talking about the subject:

image

If you can check the episode in HD you will see it clearer. If you put it with the audio of Sherlock sighing, it will be pretty telling. Sherlock sighs, turns his face to the computer and he has this look in his face, this almost suffering expression…

So what do you think? There’s something more here. Sherlock never acts so intense for a so random thing like John asking for dinner while explaining a thing about a criminal, even when that criminal is Magnussen. I still think the reaction is too huge for something like that and it would be cool if someone thinks the same n.n

That n.n. Also, sorry my grammar, I’m latinamerican…

It’s been a while since my last grammar post, hasn’t it? I was going through my grammar directory and realized I had not yet written anything about this easy-to-use and super useful form!

Maybe you’re comparing prices of two similar objects at the store, or maybe you’re disagreeing with a friend which recent blockbuster was the best. In either case, you can use -보다 to indicate that one thing is more or less (adjective) than something else.

Function

As already stated, we use -보다 to make comparisons. For example, in English we might say something like:

This cell phone is more expensive than that one.

This movie is less exciting than that one.

Junho is smarter than Dani.

All of these are covered by -보다!

Usage

To form a sentence with -보다, you would use the basic format “Y는 X보다 (descriptive verb/adjective)” to mean “Y is more (adjective) than X.” Note that this basic format only works when you want to say that something is more (adjective) than something else. If you want to specify “less than,” you need to use the adverb “덜,” which means “less.”

이 핸드폰은 저것보다 비싸요. (This cell phone is more expensive than that one.)

이 영화는 그 영화보다 재미있어요. (This movie is less exciting than that one.)

준호는 다니보다 더 똑똑해요. (Junho is smarter than Dani)

–> Note: Just like we have “덜” to indicate “less,” we also have “더” to indicate “more”! -보다 on its own automatically indicates “more than,” but you can emphasize it a little by adding “더” after -보다.

We can also expand a little bit on the basic format and be more descriptive with our comparisons by using other grammatical structures that we know.

승현 씨는 엘리 씨보다 공부를 잘하지 못해요.  (Seunghyun is worse at studying than Ellie.)

이 회사는 전에 일하던 회사보다월급이 높아요. (The salary at this company is higher than the salary at the company I worked at before.)

–> Note that 더 is separated from -보다 here. A general rule of adverbs in Korean is to try to place them as close as you can to the verbs they modify.

보다 at the start of a sentence??

Sometimes you will see 보다 at the start of the sentence. In this case, it’s similar to -보다 in the sense that they both indicate a comparison. However, 보다 at the start of a sentence (or somewhere not attached to a noun as previously shown) is an adverb that indicates something is more (insert descriptor here) than anticipated. For example:

A: 주혁 씨는 정말 묵묵하네요. (Juhyeok is pretty quiet.)

B: 좀 친해지면 보다 말이 많은데요. (If you become close with him, he talks more than you might think.)

As you can see, Juhyeok is not really being compared to some external thing. Rather, the comparison is expectation vs. reality.

Happy studying!

“I really like both of Aliona’s programs. I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions. I like them a lot, I also like both dresses too! I also hope that she gets her 3A back.”

“It’s honestly depressing how many skaters have to turn their personal social media into sales platforms for fast fashion, passing itself off as sportswear or environmentally (un)friendly stuff like bottled water, just to earn a bit of money because their federations can’t or don’t help to fund them.”

“If 2020 is a flood, then the Minsk Ice Star was a flaming dumpster floating by. Held with spectators amid COVID, in an agonizing dictatorship during mass protests, with no media coverage, borders getting closed at random, two whole national teams withdraw(l), and yet another just doesn’t show up, but it goes on, warm-ups reassigned on the fly as three ladies are late, the live stream was going down repeatedly, the kiss & cry couch ruined by antiseptic, and Mishin wearing no mask, while his team loses by 19pts., etc. etc.”

“This ‘season’ is a grotesque, dangerous joke. The ISU needs to cancel everything and give huge fines to Federations that practise bad citizenship by running domestic events now that half the world is back in lockdown. There’s no sports competition important enough to warrant traveling, even to another city right now.”

“I just don’t get excited about figure skating anymore and it makes me very sad. It’s hard to care when competitions have no stakes and my faves aren’t competing. I used to watch everything on the edge of my seat, and now I’m like, ‘Oh, was there another Russian Cup this weekend? Whatever.’ Hopefully, we will have normal international competitions next season.”

“I understand why it has to be this way, but I’m still very sad that most of my non-Russian favourites (and of course all the others too) won’t get a chance to compete this season. I miss them.”

“After Yuzu, P/C and Sui/Han, mens, ice dance and pairs will be so bland, and maybe will be for quite some time. There won’t be anymore nails that are sticking out, just a field of sort of the same, similar things over and over.”

“Team competitions at the olympics should just be gotten rid of. It makes no sense when you know which country is going to be on the podium and what place they come in. They should bring back team competition when there are 6 or 7 countries that are in medal contention, kind of like artistic gymnastics.”

“Is it too much to ask if I want yuzu to have another OGM, and p/c to have the same number and type of individual Olympic medals as v/m? The former is a possibility, but I don’t think ISU will allow the latter to happen.”

“I know Yulia had timing issues in 2015 when she got a lot taller, and so has Sasha in the latter half of the season when she grew a little, but Alina has had ur issues, rotational issues, technique issues and edge issues, but never timing issues. Maybe that swingy lutz entry really works for her.”

“I know she said it didn’t work when she tried it earlier, but I think Alysa should give the 4S another go, I think her edge jumps are better than her toe jumps (particularly/only the Lutz).”

“‘Nathan looks like he doesn’t care about and looks down upon figure skating as a sport!!!’ Cue Nathan using his free time to complete his coaching certification and coaching the younger skaters…. your faves can never and will never, sorry not sorry.”

“Sometimes, I admit, I think maybe, I do overhype Nathan too much, and maybe he really isn’t all that good, at least compared to some. But, then I rewatch his programs and I’m just like. God. What an icon. Perfection. Beautiful. Amazing. Absolutely Riveting. Stunning. And, I just fall in love with his skating all over again.”
