If you’re still reeling from Queen Yuna being dethroned by Sotnikova (as we are), the New York Times has a nifty breakdown of the difficulties and the points awarded for their programs. Sotnikova scored higher than Kim on 9 elements, Kim scored higher than Sotnikova on 3.

Yuna, you’ll always be Queen of our hearts.

Evgeni Plushenko on other top male skaters such as Patrick Chan, Denis Ten, and Yuzuru Hanyu:

“I have noticed that when I compete everybody competes against me and, when I do not, they compete with each other. On all the tournaments I skated, somehow guys skated at a very high level; they didn’t make such mistakes. With my leaving the sport guys thought they should be fighting each other because they all are of approximately the same level, instead of doing the job of which they are capable.”

Evgeni, Winter Olympics will not be the same without you! #KingofBling

viktoriakomova:

after [assuming there is an “after” in the foreseeable future] the war how will sports governing bodies go about reinstating russian competitors?

i feel like unless it ends in abject defeat of the russian military with the ones who survived being driven out of ukraine with their tails between their legs, russian athletes will still not be reinstated lmao. at least not immediately. and even eventually, not without conditions

its just such an unprecedented move that theres nothing to base any predictions or reasonable speculation off of. “unprovoked warfare” has been waged before in the post-wwii era just not against a european country so this time it counts i guess lol but nothing like a blanket ban of athletes from a country with a population in the 9+ digits has happened before (at least not to my knowledge offhand)

if you’re going to punish athletes simply for being born in a certain country that moved to commit atrocities and crimes against peace, and that country comes out of the conflict they started “victorious” (however that might look), how can you justify reinstating them in international competition after that? what is the reasoning behind it? a peace treaty being signed, but the clear victor being the aggressor, so the war is “over” but the russians got their way, so its fine to have russian athletes compete again? if it ends in occupation and/or a puppet govt, wont the russian athletes be symbolic of that as well?

the more you pull at this thread the more it all unravels lol

“I really like both of Aliona’s programs. I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions. I like them a lot, I also like both dresses too! I also hope that she gets her 3A back.”

“If 2020 is a flood, then the Minsk Ice Star was a flaming dumpster floating by. Held with spectators amid COVID, in an agonizing dictatorship during mass protests, with no media coverage, borders getting closed at random, two whole national teams withdraw(l), and yet another just doesn’t show up, but it goes on, warm-ups reassigned on the fly as three ladies are late, the live stream was going down repeatedly, the kiss & cry couch ruined by antiseptic, and Mishin wearing no mask, while his team loses by 19pts., etc. etc.”

“I just don’t get excited about figure skating anymore and it makes me very sad. It’s hard to care when competitions have no stakes and my faves aren’t competing. I used to watch everything on the edge of my seat, and now I’m like, ‘Oh, was there another Russian Cup this weekend? Whatever.’ Hopefully, we will have normal international competitions next season.”

“I understand why it has to be this way, but I’m still very sad that most of my non-Russian favourites (and of course all the others too) won’t get a chance to compete this season. I miss them.”

“What on earth are those weird choreos. that Sambo-70 does in its dance classes??? Now I understand why Shoma didn’t want to stay with Eteri when he went there for a camp (during the time he was coachless, before the start of the 2019-2020 season). Sure, he was like: Nope after going to those dance classes, lol they look ridiculous.”

“LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Trusova’s SP! People say she’s robotic and not lyrical, but Alexandra does what she wants, as she should. The costume, the music, the choreography, the elements: PERFECTION. Waiting for her to skate it cleanly! <3”

“I know Yulia had timing issues in 2015 when she got a lot taller, and so has Sasha in the latter half of the season when she grew a little, but Alina has had ur issues, rotational issues, technique issues and edge issues, but never timing issues. Maybe that swingy lutz entry really works for her.”

“If the Chinese and the Russians starts politicking in Beijing by guaranteeing Chinese pairs the gold and Russian ice dance teams the gold and screw P/C (politics started in euros already), I want P/C to pull a Savchenko.”

“If Russia is always scheming/politicking in figure skating, they should just be banned from being a member of the ISU, banned from judging, and then they can play politics within their own country instead. But ¾ of ISU is literally funded by Russia, and Russia is the puppeteer of ISU. What a shame, because they have some of the most amazing skaters and their federation acting like that is so toxic to the athletes.”

“I always think it’s sad when a low-ranked skater has a really outstanding skate at Nationals and makes the podium, but nobody knows or cares because they don’t come from one of the four big feds.”

“Nowadays, unless they are A.) Team Tutberidze, B.) a Russian, C.) a Japanese, or D.) an American, no one talks about them! There are so many lovely skaters that I would love to hear more about, but I never hear about them unless they fit in one of those boxed-up categories.”
