The Rebirth of Hiut Denim. Welsh denim company Hiut based in the small town of the Cardigan, is going through something of a rebirth, opening its factory doors again to bring us some great denims. Using Kuroki denim they are putting together some amazing raw jeans for us all. The small town in Wales had been producing jeans for 30 years until the factory closed, but now they are back still filled with knowledge and amazing craftsmanship. Have a look see..

I just found two different listing on the internet as I was making market research for my essay on suburban spaces, writing about house prices and quality. My broad web search led me to find two architecture realities that demonstrate how the real estate landscape is odd and sometimes on steroids.

The house on the left is a beautiful Victorian home located in Maryland in the US, the asking price is US $1.19 million, while the one on the right is a McMansion outside Toronto going for CDN $3.8 million. What’s going on here?

The Canadian housing market is gone crazy with prices that aren’t stopping soaring not even through the crisis between 2007 and 2008. Toronto Listings are filled with small 2 bedrooms 1 bathroom going for 600k at least for homes built forty years ago.

Off course the two locations are geographically different and housing markets might follow alternative priorities; however, it’s shocking seeing how much value some new homes have reached despite their bland style and cheap construction material.

image

This other listing featured another beautiful home in Seattle with lake view and compared to the above house outside Toronto it still cheaper by $1 million and change. Despite the styles, this Victorian house has been built with far better quality than any multi-million dollar mansion in 2017, and it has retained its aesthetic value for over a century while newer homes won’t last fifty years.

Communities outside the city built with the principle of traditional craftsmanship in the 18th and early 20th century have contributed in making the urban landscape better looking. Essentially they make neighbors vibrant, original, and worth caring about. Today, instead, we face the sad reality of cookie-cutter homes built left and right non-stop with the cheapest materials which are too expensive and out of the reach of consumers and add no particular values to communities.

Basalt by Jeonghwa Seo / studio H&S

South Korean designer Jeonghwa Seo has designed a collection of desktop accessories made of Jeju Island basalt by local artisans. This collection comprises a paper weight, coasters, a bookend, a pen holder, a pen tray and a business card tray. Each is carved from natural stones by craftspeople in Jeju, the largest island in South Korea, and given an underside coating of black acrylic to prevent scratching the desk surface.

Charred Lamps by Ash & Plumb

The two Brighton, UK based Designers, and makers Barnaby Ash and Dru Plumb came together with the passion to honor the appearance of natural materials. so they decided to craft classically formed pieces like these lamps and combine them with natural materials like different kinds of wood in a way that displays the beauty of the character of the material. in this case three beautifully charred lamps.

6 years ago I tried my hand at leather working for the first time. I had no experience on what I was doing. I decided to make a rose on my first attempt. The only tools I had were a hammer, bevel, and a scrap piece of leather. As you can see it came out ok but nowhere near what I would be satisfied with. It didnt have that pop or standout detail most tooled leather pieces had. So comparing my first piece to what I’m able to create now I can see a lot of improvements in my work. But since this is a side hobby I’m nowhere near a master craftsman. But maybe one day..

As angelic as it looks, “L'elephant Blanc” evening dress did not descend from the heavens on it’s own. This ensemble was part of Yves Saint Laurent debut collection for House of Dior, entitled “Trapeze Line”. Italian Tailoring offers an insider’s view into the world of Italian tailoring and its key protagonists. Journalist Yoshimi Hasegawa, an expert in European tailoring, presents an extraordinarily stylish travelogue, surveying tailoring across the country. Beginning at the beginning–with the famed Vitale Barberis Canonico fabric mill–this publication profiles 28 historic tailor shops in Italy and the famed names behind them (from Donnadio to Musella; Liverano & Liverano to Sartoria Napoletana; Rubinacci and Attolini to Caraceni, Ciardi and Pirozzi).

Italian Tailoring leads the reader on a journey through Italy, from north to south, in search of the haute tailoring and the practitioners who have shaped the world-famous Italian style. “My plastic water bucket dripping a bit so I mixed up a little epoxy, which is the one item more than anything else that holds ‘One Man’s Wilderness’ together.”

- Richard Proenneke, March 11, 1978, in More Readings from One Man’s Wilderness: The Journals of Richard L. Proenneke, 1974-1980 (p. 258)

Landscapes of Literature: Richard Proenneke

Richard “Dick” Proenneke built his cabin on the shore of Upper Twin Lake during the summers of 1967 and 1968. While it wasn’t the first or the largest cabin ever to be constructed in the Alaskan Bush, it stands out for its remarkable craftsmanship and for his documentation of the construction process.

image

Proenneke built an elevated log cache, a combined woodshed/outhouse, and constructed the stone fireplace in the cabin by hand. His building style responded to the unique area and was intended to be both aesthetically appealing and functional for year-round living at Upper Twin Lake.

Proenneke lived in the cabin for 30 years without electricity, running water, a telephone, or other modern conveniences. Despite his remote location and fierce independence, he did not live removed from society. Proenneke maintained friendships, wrote letters, and interacted with pilots, fishermen, neighbors, and park rangers.

He chronicled his experiences and observations at Twin Lakes through correspondence, annotated calendars and maps, films, and journals. He always tacked a pin in a map before he would set out hiking, the marker showing where he intended to go and the holes across the map’s surface telling of past destinations.

image

Proenneke used the elevated cache to store various goods, including flour, candy, clothing, filming equipment, and aircraft parts (NPS).

Richard Proenneke was also intimately connected to his natural surroundings. As a result of his observations and advocacy, he became well known during the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) debate of the 1970s, inspiring several books and films and encouraging public support for wild lands in Alaska.

A strong proponent of preservation of the Twin Lakes-Lake Clark country, he gradually came to support the establishment of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. He became a volunteer with the park, helping NPS personnel to monitor weather, collect botanical specimens, assist with aerial wildlife counts, and coordinate float plane pickups between rangers and visitors.

image

Icicles frame a view of the mountains and lake visible from Richard Proenneke’s cabin (NPS).

Dick Proenneke kept a journal from his first visit to Twin Lakes in 1962. The publication of some of those journals in 1973 as One Man’s Wilderness (edited by Sam Keith) was largely responsible for bringing wider public recognition to Proenneke and Twin Lakes. Eventually, additional journals were published and documentary profiles were created using Proenneke’s own film footage, showing his relationship to the landscape.

Watch it:

In 2000, he and his brother, Raymond, donated all his journals to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve.

Proenneke’s voice was influential in shaping the preservation of wilderness in Alaska. His words and films reflect his pragmatism and care for this place and profoundly shaped public awareness of the values of Alaska’s wilderness.  Richard Proenneke died in 2003, but the values of wilderness preservation and resource protection that he embodied live on through his journal entries and in the features of the cultural landscape.
