64. “I can’t do this anymore.. not with you.”

42. “It’s midnight! Where the hell were you?

Alfred watched quietly as Master Bruce puttered around the kitchen, fingers tapping and touching nearly everything without settling. They both knew he was just stalling time until he had no choice but to face the music upstairs. He ran his fingers across the toaster one last time before sighing, turning around to face his friend.

“I suppose I should go tell her I’m back.” He leaned against the spotless marble counter-top and drummed his fingers mindlessly against it. Alfred merely fixed him with a knowing look and nodded slightly. Bruce gave one final tap to the edge and bid him good night.

He opened the bedroom door almost silently, only to be greeted by a scowl as you switched on the light. You were curled up in his desk chair on the farthest side of the room. He knew you’d been up for a while thanks to the nearly empty mug of tea in your hands. The two of you studied one another for a brief moment- him taking note of the way your hair curled around your face and how well you filled out his shirt that you had stolen for bed, you feeling bad over his exhausted expression yet getting angrier as you realized he also looked just as guilty as you knew he had to be.

It’s midnight.” You were the first to break the silence. “Where the hell were you?

Bruce sighed and ruffled his hair, turning from you and beginning to undress for bed.

“I had business to attend to, you kn-”

“Business? At this hour?” You nearly laughed at the pathetic excuse. “Do you think I’m that stupid?”

He turned around and fixed you with a patronizing look that made you feel like a kid again.“Of course I don’t think you’re stupid. It’s just- It’s complicated, okay?”

“Everything with you is complicated, Bruce. Women who date you should be offered a manual upon first contact.” You quickly swallowed the remaining dregs of your cold tea before setting it down and moving to your boyfriend.

Bruce relaxed the moment your hands met his back, sliding around from behind to help unbutton his shirt and pull it away from his shoulders. You went to push up his undershirt as well but he gripped your hands and gently pulled them away. If you saw the bruises spreading across his ribs, courtesy of Penguin, he knew he wouldn’t be able to dodge your questions.

You stood there for a moment, staring at his back in confusion as he gripped your wrists tight enough to keep you still. The anger that had ebbed away when you touched him came rushing back full force, accompanied by hot angry tears that refused to fall.

He was surprised but complied when you yanked yourself away from him and walked over to your side of the bed. You yanked off his shirt so you could put on your own clothes- the shimmery dress that had gotten you many compliments just hours ago at the gala.

“Babe, what are you-”

“No.” That’s all you said as you clipped your bra into place and began shimmying into the tight little number. He was quiet for a moment, so you continued. “No. You need to tell me right now what’s going on. I don’t think you’re a cheater, Bruce, even though that’s exactly what this looks like. But you’re lying to me about something. I don’t want to spend my whole life in the dark, so you need to clear it up rightnow.”

He made a move to help you zip up out of habit, but you gracefully dodged him and squirmed around until you managed to get it yourself. You stood there, shoes in hand, waiting for him to say anything.

For just a moment, Bruce actually considered telling you. You’d stuck around longer than anyone else. You’d seen and heard plenty of weird, living in Gotham your whole life. The trust he had in you was unshakable, and that was amazing on its own. What’s the worst that could happen?

But then he pictured you battered and broken, surrounded by the Penguin’s henchmen. He watched the Riddler dangle you over a vat of acid as he threw random bat trivia at him. The worst was when he watched the Joker bring his crowbar down on you over and over again, blood flying into the air as you tried to scream in pain but all you could do was laugh hysterically thanks to the gas.

“Bruce…” Your voice brought him out of his reverie, your lovely, musical voice. You stared at him, willing your tears to stay back a little bit longer. “I can’t do this anymore with you, do you understand?”

After a moment of silence, all he could say was, “I’m sorry.”

You couldn’t help but stare at him with wide eyes. Unbelievable. He couldn’t be honest with you, after all this time. Closing your mouth and squaring your shoulders, you slipped your heels onto your feet and strode past him to the door. You picked your purse and coat up off the floor, but not before sparing him one last glance. He looked much older and frail in that moment, and you actually felt a great swell of pity for him.

“Good bye, Mr. Wayne. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.” With that you walked away from him.

So, I finally got to watch Aquaman! It came out recently in Japan (and by recently, I mean it came out last week) and I think I’m very biased when I say this but I love it. I should have posted this sooner but I was also busy packing for my trips and what not and only just got to settle down yesterday. That aside, this was inspired by some bits from the movie. There will always be mistakes so I do apologize for that!

p/s: this is probably the longest one I have written this year (not that I actually have written much but I will start posting more soon and going through your requests).

Arthur should have known right at that very moment that something is wrong, especially when you have this indescribable expression on your face. You don’t know this, but Arthur had actually seen you sitting at the end of the dock and something about you just seemed very forlorn. It should have been a sign to him that something is absolutely wrong but being the fool that he is, Arthur clears his throat and casually walks over to where you are sitting. “Hey, babe.” Arthur greets you and as he is about to presses his lips atop your head, you duck away from him and Arthur is slightly taken aback – this is the first time you have ever moved away from his affections.

Trying your hardest not to look at Arthur’s face, you scoot over slightly and stand up, making sure to leave enough space between the two of you. You have known about Arthur’s background ever since the two of you were younger – you had found yourself a friend in Arthur when you first moved to the area and over the years, that friendship slowly grew in to something more and it was not until the end of college that the two of you actually decided to give it a try. But now that is evident that Arthur Curry is no just the Arthur Curry that you know and love – he is also Arthur Curry, the rightful King of Atlantis… and the man who also broke your heart into pieces (especially when he had admitted to kissing Mera not once but twice – one during the midst of battle and another he shared right after the war ended and he claimed his rightful place on the throne).

“Y/N?”

Arthur’s voice pulls you out of your train of thoughts and you finally turned to look at the man you should probably be hating but absolutely cannot. Arthur is just as handsome as he has always been and your fingers twitch; the urge to cup his cheek and press your lips against him is almost overwhelming but you shake your head. “We need to talk.”

The dread that has been building in him escalates and it should have triggered a warning in him, but Arthur continues to stare at you. “It’s never a good thing when someone says that.” He says weakly and his lips are beginning to dry.

You try to smile at him but when Arthur continues to stare at you in slow recognition, you drop the smile and look away from him, staring at the water. “We have been together for over ten years now, haven’t we? But we have known each other twice as long. I like to think that I know you better than you actually know yourself sometimes, Arthur.”

“What are you trying to say here, Y/N?” Arthur has a feeling that he knows exactly what you are about to say but he just can’t seem to wrap his head around it: like you have said, the two of you have known each other twice as long and have been together for over ten years now.

You take a deep breath and turn to look at Arthur straight in his eyes. “I love you, Arthur Curry, very much so but I think it’s about time for us to break up.” As soon as those words leave your mouth, you almost want to take it back immediately. “Before you say anything, yes, it is partly because you kissed Mera not once but twice and it hurts. I tried to get over it, I really did but I just can’t.” You shake your head as tears start to slowly well up in your eyes.

Arthur’s face blanches and he inhales sharply. He had been contemplating whether or not he should tell you about what had happened during his journey to reclaim the throne and knew that if he didn’t tell you, he would remain guilty. Now, Arthur thinks he should probably have kept that information to himself because he just cannot see his future without you by his side – no, he really can’t. “Y/N, please,” His voice is heavy with emotions, as he tries to convey his entire feelings for you through his eyes.

“Matter of fact is we come from two very different worlds and we are never meant for each other, Arthur and…” You have to swallow the lump in your throat as you stare at the man that has been a constant in your life and your heart clenches in pain, as if it is being squeezed very tightly and right at that moment, you know you need to get away as soon as you can. With the tears in your eyes blurring your vision of the man that you love very deeply, Arthur steps towards you with the intention of wanting to comfort you, you step back and shake your head, creating more distance the two of you. “Sometimes, you have to do what’s right even when your heart aches against it and I really think we should just end it here, Arthur.”

Arthur would not admit it to anyone, but his eyes actually tear up the slightest bit upon hearing those words coming out of your mouth. He tries to swallow the lump in his throat and the look on your face – defeated yet at the same time, the way you are staring at him as if trying to map every inch of his face for the very last time scares him more than that time he had to fight for not just his own life but everyone else in the nation – stops him from approaching you. His fingers twitch against his sides and he clenches them into fists. Against his better judgment, Arthur tries to take another step towards you but when you scramble backwards – and away from him, Arthur freezes but not just because of your actions – rather, Arthur had stopped because he sees a few drops of tears running down your cheeks: the same cheeks he had been kissing just a few days ago and his heart thuds against his chest almost painfully.

You let out a choked sob as one of your hands fly to your mouth and you keep it there, to keep your sobs from escaping. You wanted to show Arthur that you are fine with the decision you are making- even if it is costing you your own chance at happiness. Gingerly stepping towards Arthur, you hold up your hand towards him and when Arthur does nothing but stare at you with a heart-breaking expression, you grab his hand and forcefully open his fist so that you can drop the necklace he had gotten you for your first anniversary.

Honestly, after seeing Arthur – King Arthur, you remind yourself – with Princess Mera, you know there is no place for you: the two of them had shared something better than the years you have spent being by Arthur’s side. Saving worlds together has got to be a game changer, isn’t it? You step back and take a deep breath, quickly wiping the tears away from your face. “I love you very much, Arthur Curry. Thank you for giving me the chance to experience happiness with you, even if it was just for a while.” You had to mentally applaud yourself for not breaking down as you utter those words. “Goodbye, Arthur.”

You turn to walk away when Arthur finally snaps into action. He grabs your wrist, stopping you. “Y/N, where – where are you going to go now?” He asks numbly and you gently pull your wrist from him, causing Arthur to once again feel his heart clenching in pain.

You straighten your back and glance over your shoulder. “Some place where no one knows my name.” You tell him and with one last look, you turn around and continue to walk ahead – leaving your heart behind in the process.

Arthur, on the hand, continued to stand there despondently, hand clenched over the necklace you had returned. He didn’t know how long he had been standing there, not until someone clasps his shoulder and Arthur’s immediate reaction is to throw them back in the water.

Mera sputters as she resurfaces, not expecting that coming from Arthur. “What was that all about?” She gracefully gets out of the water to stand on the dock beside Arthur but when Arthur fails to respond and she can see the sadness present on his face, Mera swallows her playfulness and furrows her eyebrows. “What happened?”

Arthur shrugs his shoulders, mumbling an apology as he sits down at the edge of the dock, looking out at the setting sun. “What else? Just when things were finally going to be better now.” He mutters the last part to himself but since Mera had been close to him, she had heard each and every word.

Mera scans the area and sees nothing out of the ordinary but knows from how tense and tight the muscles on Arthur’s back – something must have happened between Arthur and you. She hasn’t met you personally yet – Mera has only ever seen you a handful of times and one of them was during that time Orn had caused the tsunami and she had seen the look of absolute love on Arthur’s face that time. “Is there a reason for why you are here and not chasing after her, Arthur?”

Arthur resists the urge to roll his eyes. “We are too different – from different worlds.” He says spitefully. Despite the brave front he puts, Arthur still cannot believe that the two of you had just broken up: he never thought you would ever leave him and he never thought he would ever experience this much pain either.

Mera shakes her head as she looks at Arthur. “I have mentioned this before: you are the bride between land and sea, Arthur.” Mera states, causing Arthur to glance up at her but when her gaze became too piercing, he looks away towards the sea. “I admit what I had done during and after the war was not the right thing to do, given the fact that I know just how absolutely in love you are with Y/N and I know the both of us were simply caught up in the moment, from the rush of the battle and winning the battle but that is not an excuse and I would like to apologize.” Mera informs him; she had definitely let the adrenaline and the rush from their adventure together rush to her head and in a whirlwind of emotions, she had decided to kiss Arthur.

Mera cannot really say that she isn’t attracted to Arthur because she definitely is. However, she understands the difference between being physically attracted to someone and being absolutely in love with someone and Mera can guarantee that whatever feelings she may have for Arthur, they are all merely superficial – beyond what has been painted of him, Mera knows nothing more. She also knows that right after they had kissed the second time, Arthur had looked very distraught – Mera reckons perhaps right at that moment, Arthur had thought of you, his lover of over ten years. “Y/N makes you extremely happy, Arthur and there is absolutely no reason for the two of you to separate on the account of coming from two different worlds. You have managed nicely so far so Arthur, why are you here instead of chasing after the woman of your life?”

Arthur takes a while to mull over what Mera has said. If his parents can work things out even after all of these years, why can’t he do the same thing? You mean so much to him and honestly, as cheesy as this sounds, whenever Arthur thinks of the future, he always imagines you being with him, building his own house for the two of you to live in together, having children together, growing old together – every single thing revolves around you and clenching his fist, Arthur nods his head, determined to win you back. He stands up abruptly and look at Mera.

“You are a pretty cool chick, Mera – I hope one day you will find someone who completes you.” Arthur tells her, pulling her into a brief hug. He lets her go and turns to head towards the light house.

“How are you going to find her?” Mera calls out from behind him.

Arthur looks over his shoulder. “I think I know a guy who might know.”

Hi! Thank you for sending this in. I rarely ever get requests for Billy Batson so this was sort of a fun practice to do! Sorry it took so long for me to post this up but I hope you enjoy this regardless.

  • Dating Billy Batson would mean that you are privy to his alter ego (Shazam!) and the only reason you figured out his secret identity is because of how he had called out your name when he saved you that one unfortunate time you happened to be at the wrong place and the wrong time.
  • “Y/N, are you alright? Did you get hurt - why are you looking at me like that, Y/N? …Oh!”
  • After that entire fiasco, Billy sat you down and explained everything that happened to him and how he acquired his powers. You managed to convince him to go to you whenever he has any injuries or whatsoever because you really want to take care of Billy.
  • “I don’t care if it’s in the middle of the night or at 5AM, Billy, if you ever need a place to crash, you can come to me. I’ll always keep my door and window open for you.”
  • Billy is so much comfortable around you now compared to before. Since you know his secret, he sometimes go to you for a second opinion on his plans.
  • “Y/N, do you think it’s better if I do this or should I just stick to the original plan? Which one is better?”
  • “How about you do it like this instead?”
  • Billy feels like he can always count on you to have his back and he always tries to make sure he has your back as well. He tries his hardest to be there for you when and if people tease or bully you for dating him.
  • “Are you sure you don’t want me to go after them? I promise I won’t break any of their bones or anything, Y/N. Just gotta show them how they shouldn’t mess with you at all!”
  • Whenever Billy is free from official Justice League missions, he would always try to spend most of his time with you and doing the assignments or homework he missed while he had been away.
  • In the end, Billy will always end up falling asleep either on your shoulder or your lap. Not that you mind at all, because you actually like that he feels safe enough with you to fall asleep near you.
  • Date days/nights would consist of you cooking brunch/lunch/dinner depending on when Billy decides to drop by. Sometimes, Billy would try to cook but he only knows how to make simple food like sandwiches, mashed potatoes and toast with scrambled eggs. He burns everything else!
  • Sometimes when you are feeling stressed, Billy will turn into Shazam and bring you flying because he thinks you will enjoy the view from up in the sky.
  • “Thank you, Billy. This is the first time I have ever seen stars this bright and many.”

This was inspired by a couple of songs and I honestly hadn’t mean for it to turn out like this but it did? There are definitely mistakes here and there but I tried my best to fix them. I probably overlooked a few. That aside, fun fact: I have yet to see Aquaman on the big screen. Why? Because it has yet to premiere here in Japan and I really, really cannot wait to watch it. I hope you enjoyed this! Don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers (obviously lol).

p/s: I also have yet to watch YJ Outsiders so I’m really forward to watching those soon!

It didn’t matter anymore. You are tired of always feeling like this: desolate and bereft, always longing and waiting. You haven’t always felt like this though. There was a time where you actually felt happy, content and satisfied. It first appeared when Arthur came late during date nights (the two of you made a promise to always have a date night once a week), which you honestly didn’t really mind as much until it kept on happening to the point where Arthur stood up multiple of times. (The looks the waiter or waitress that happened to serve you that night burned into your mind).

You aren’t aware of when this had started exactly for you always had this thought that the relationship you have with Arthur is going well. It was merely wishful thinking because Arthur continued to prove you wrong as the days pass: it went from Arthur standing you up on date nights to giving you poorly made up excuses about why he was gone for half of those times or why he would always come to your (shared) apartment so very late in the night (or early in the morning), with his hair damp and using a shampoo that is ultimately not his because it smells just a tad bit too feminine, by the time he slides in the bed beside you. (It almost makes you feel sick).

You didn’t actually want to believe it – what girl ever does? You have had your suspicions but despite your copious efforts in trying to prepare yourself for the inevitable, you are really not prepared at all. Perhaps, in theory, you probably had everything down to the T but when it came to actually be seeing it, with your own pair of eyes, that was the time when you understand just how painful it is to be very in love. Especially when the one you love to the moon and back and then some is perhaps in love with someone else.

Not far from where you are standing, Arthur has his arms around this pretty bombshell of a lady with beautiful fiery hair. Although you actually cannot see it from where you are standing, from the way she also has her arms around him and the way their heads are tilted towards each other, they are probably kissing, and it hurts. It hurts to see the two of them together like that so you left without looking back at all.

Arthur stretches his arms above his head. “Thanks for today,” He mutters to Mera who nods her head. “I doubt I would have been able to find this without your help.” Arthur opens his palm and the corner of his lips lift up the slightest bit upon seeing the serpentine he had found while on his expedition with Mera.

Mera gives him a small smile. “I never thought I would actually see the day where you would be this soft.” She explains, looking away from Arthur to look at the sea. “She is lucky to have you.” Mera couldn’t help the slight hurt from showing on her face but she had been too late, and Arthur is too madly in love with you to even be looking in her direction.

Arthur scoffs, making Mera look at him in confusion. “I’m the one that’s lucky to have her.” He really is. Arthur feels really bad for all the times he had stood you up during date nights but that is no longer going to happen. He closes his palm once more, making sure to put the Serpentine carefully in his pocket.

“Yeah, I suppose so.” Mera agrees softly. “You ought to go. Isn’t today one of your date nights?” Mera reminded him and Arthur nods his head. “I think I will take a walk, familiarize myself with the area.”

Arthur nods his head once again. “You do that.” The two of them exchange a few more words and after he sees Mera off, Arthur takes off towards the safe house Bruce Wayne had prepared for him. He is going to take this chance to make it all up to you and explain everything to you.

It took Arthur over an hour to get everything ready – since he had found the Serpentine, Arthur managed to cut the rock nicely to fit the ring he had made for you (trying to take your finger’s measurement while you had been asleep had been tough because you kept stirring slightly whenever he tried). Once he was showered and dressed, Arthur picked up the ring box – he also made this box from one of the shells he had found on the sea bed – and made his way to the closest florist shop because Arthur recalls just how much you adore getting flowers and Arthur knows it has been a while since he gave you any bouquet.

“Give me your finest flowers.” Arthur states once he reaches the counter. He fumbles with the box of ring in his pocket.

“Is this for a special occasion, Sir?”

Arthur glances around the shop before looking back at the florist. “Yes.” He tells him gruffly but when the man continues to stare at him, almost imploringly, Arthur relents. “I… want to propose to my lover tonight so can you please give me your finest flowers? Price doesn’t matter.” Arthur takes out the card Bruce had provided and places it on the counter.

Upon seeing the Wayne Enterprise card on the counter, the florist pales slightly and nods his head. “Right away, Sir.”

It took Arthur almost half an hour after that to get to your apartment. On his way over, Arthur can’t help but think about all the things he needed to say to you and the closer he gets to your apartment, the more he is dreading it. Arthur doesn’t really quite understand the dread that is building in him until he unlocks your door to find your entire apartment pitch black.

“Y/N?” He calls out, swallowing the lump that appeared in his throat as he steps into the apartment, closing the door behind him. He switches on the lights and he frowns. “You asleep?” He walks toward your bedroom and the frown on his face deepens when he notices that your bedroom is dark too. When he switches on the light, his eyes are drawn to how bare the room looks. Granted, he hadn’t been able to come back for the past couple of days but the last time he had been here, Arthur could have sworn your things were all over the place but now… it feels barren to him. “Come on, Y/N. This isn’t funny, babe.”

Arthur doesn’t realize this, but he breaks some of the flowers’ stems as his grip tightens at the many possibilities: what if someone had gone for you while he was gone? What if you had actually tried to reach him but couldn’t? What if you needed him and he wasn’t there? All of these thoughts were swimming in his head until Arthur zones in on the bed.

The closer he gets to the bed, the heavier his feet become – at one point, Arthur even feels like he had been dragging his feet. Right on his side of the bed, you left a frame facing down on his pillow and he gingerly reaches for the frame, hand trembling visibly. When he lifts up the frame, it is a photo of Arthur and you, taken by one of your friends: Arthur has his arm wrapped around your waist and you were laughing, leaning against him. With a twinge in his heart, Arthur notices just how much he misses seeing you laughing so freely. When he makes the move to set aside the frame, his eyes land on the letter and it is right there and then did Arthur realize just how much love hurts.

This was requested by anon and it is long overdue but I really had so much fun writing this request. I chose to write about Disneysea because I just came back from Disneysea with a bunch of my friends and despite the cold, I enjoyed it immensely! So I figured, since the memory is still fresh in mind, I should write about it. Thank you so much for sending this in!

The first time you had noticed him had been by Triton’s Kingdom’s inner facilities. While your friends had gone to wait in line at the Blowfish Balloon Race, you had opted to wait in line at Sebastian’s Calypso Kitchen because you were hungry, and you did not feel like going round and round on the balloon ride. You had been minding your own business when you suddenly see something from the corner of your eyes so naturally, you turned to look, and it was probably one of the best decisions you have ever made because standing not far from you – by The Sleepy Whale Shoppe – were a group of friends? Family? – you weren’t quite sure – and they looked like they were having a good time.

(Although, out of everyone present in that group, there was only one person that caught your attention).

He was wearing a fitted black shirt with jeans that hugged his derriere very well and the jean jacket he threw on top of his shirt made him look all the more appealing and sexier. Not only that, he was also using a Mickey Mouse headband as well, making him look quite adorable – though when you did a quick scan, you notice that almost everyone in his group had either a headband or a hat.

The first time you had noticed him had been by Triton’s Kingdom’s inner facilities. You had been waiting in line by Sebastian’s Calypso Kitchen when you suddenly see something from the corner of your eyes. So, naturally, you turned to look and it was one of the best decisions you have ever made because standing by The Sleepy Whale Shoppe were a group of friends? Brothers? – you weren’t quite sure – and they were all good looking. Although, out of everyone present in that group, there is this one person who caught your attention.

While you were busy checking him out, you had missed one of his friends nudging him and pointing at you. So, when he turned to look at you, you blush profusely when he caught your eyes and gave you a smile – one that you reckon will probably be in your dreams when you return to your hostel that night. You immediately look away, placing both of your hands on your cheeks. “I am so dumb.” You murmured to yourself, relieved that you would be going up to the counter very soon.

The second time you had noticed him… Well, you had not really notice him at that time for you were too busy trying to build up the courage to take photos with Pluto when one of your friends nudge you. “Y/N, don’t look now but some hottie is definitely checking you out right now.” She whispered, giggling to your side and you probably should have listened to her but when someone tells you to not do something, you have this tendency to do quite the opposite.

So, you looked over your shoulders and almost choked on air when you saw the man from Triton’s Kingdom and this time around, he gave you another dazzling smile and a wave, causing you to flush from his attention. Not wanting to repeat the mistake you had done earlier (when you told your friends about what had happened while you waited for your hotdogs, your friends had given you an earful for not smiling back at him), you shyly lifted a hand to wave back and the smile on his face grew bigger, if possible.

“You should totally go over there and say hi to him, Y/N!” Your friend told you, but you shook your head. Today is really all about having fun with your friends and truth be told, you were just far too shy to go over to where he was casually standing at to ask for his name and number.

Giving him one last look, you turned to look at your friend. “It’s fine – come on, help me take a photo with Pluto, please?” You asked her, handing your phone to your friend and she furrowed her eyebrows at you before she relented, giving you a smile.

“Third time’s the charm, right?”

You had almost dropped your Strawberry flavored popcorn in surprise upon hearing a voice right beside your ear, but you did, however, startle, almost tripping over your own feet in surprise until a warm hand caught you and steadied you. You mumble an apology and turned around. “Oh my God.”

The man from before is standing right beside you and he is better looking upfront and definitely taller than you. You blink a couple of times and flush slightly at the smile on his face. “Sorry about that.” He apologizes and you shake your head, tongue too tied-up now. “My name is Dick and I know this is too forward of me, but we have seen each other quite a lot of times today, haven’t we?”

At this, you had to let out a soft laugh. You did happen to see him a lot today and although you should probably consider the fact that he might have been stalking you as well, you feel flattered that he even bothered talking to you. “Yes, we have. My name is Y/N.”

“So,” Dick looks around and looks back at you, raising one of his eyebrows up. “Why are you alone and not with your… friends? Sisters?” He asks as he moves forward with you.

“My friends are afraid of heights and I really wanted to ride the rollercoaster.” You explain, awkwardly holding on to your popcorn, contemplating if you should offer some to him or not. “What about you?”

Dick rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. “My family all went ahead – priority passes – but while we were walking by, I saw you alone so here I am.” He tells you and your jaw drops slightly. Being able to afford priority passes speaks a lot – they are far different than fast lane passes – and the blush on your cheeks darken at what he had just implied. Dick smiles warmly at you. “You don’t mind, do you?” The smile falters slightly when it suddenly occurred to him that you might actually mind.

The first time Dick had seen you, the entire family had been trying to convince Damian and Jason to either get a headband or a character hat because everyone but the two of them got hats and headband and it had actually been Jason that pointed you out to him.

The second time he saw you, he was slightly disappointed that you didn’t even look at him but when he saw how excited you were, waiting for your turn to take a photo with Pluto, Dick could not help but smile so he stayed around the area just for a little bit – which happened to be a good thing because after that, Alfred managed to make everybody come together nicely for a family photo.

So, obviously, when he saw you standing alone and enjoying your popcorn, Dick knew he had to talk to you.

“No, I don’t.” You shake your head, giving him a shy smile and Dick visibly relaxes, a smile returning back on his face. “Would you… Do you want some popcorn? It’s strawberry flavor.” You offer the popcorn to him.

Dick chuckles and nods his head. “Sure, Y/N.”

This was totally written very quickly so there are definitely a lot of mistakes! Didn’t have the time to proof-read because I had to go visit a shrine to pay respects to the Gods (or something like that). Since it’s already 2019 (from where I am), happy new year! May 2019 be better than 2018 for all of you!

The reader tries to get over dick so jason takes the reader out on a date to make them feel better which makes dick jealous its kind of lame im sorry the plot sucks have a nice day ❤

Jason had been a little bit too late in stopping you – if only he had been faster, he would have been able to save you from seeing such a sight. It wasn’t like Jason was not aware of your feelings about his older brother, Dick, because everyone but the actual object of your affections knew about your feelings.

A part of Jason wanted to go inside the room and throw a few punches for causing such a heart wrenching expression to appear on your face, but Jason remembers clearly how you were frozen stiff, standing by the doorway. All Jason could have done right at that time was to grip your wrist lightly and gently pulling you away from the room.

(The room where the love of your life was currently kissing the love of his life, probably).

The rest of that night went by a blur, mostly because Jason had been busy taking care of you. He had decided against bringing you back to your own apartment – knowing very well how you would just drown yourself with countless of alcohol and cry your eyes out the entire night and then some – and brought you over to his instead. He did give you some alcohol and you definitely consumed more than he thought you should have but you had relented when he told you to stop and that was when you had begun crying your eyes out.

But that had been two weeks ago. Jason thinks that is enough time for you to grieve – or at the very least, get over your initial hurt – over your unreciprocated love. Dick had been none the wiser, simply wondering where you had gone – Jason both likes and dislikes how you are able to avoid almost everyone for a good two weeks now, him included. But enough is enough and Jason was never known for being extremely patient, especially when it comes to something that he wants and, in this case, he wants you.

If someone had asked Jason when he had started liking you, Jason would not have been able to give you. Solid answer. Maybe it had been that one time where you had slapped him for his crude comment or maybe that one time, he had saved you from getting shot or it could have been that time when you had handed him his own ass. Jason can’t decide when he began having feelings for you at all.

So here he is now.

Jason clears his throat, catching you by surprise and you almost drop the book you had been browsing. Out of all the places, Jason definitely did not imagine finding you here in this bookstore. It should have been the first place he had looked at – considering how much you loved reading books – and the sheepish smile you gave him is almost enough to melt the annoyance within him.

“You are really hard to track when you don’t want to be found.” Jason points out as he steps toward you. You give him a sheepish chuckle, placing the book back at its place. He leans slightly against the bookshelf, making sure not to put all of his weight into it lest he wants it to fall. “I’d like to ask how you are, but you obviously look physically fine to me so how are you feeling?” But before you could even answer, Jason quickly adds, “And you better not tell me you are fine.”

You sigh, copying Jason’s pose and leaning against the bookshelf as well. “I’m healing, I guess. It doesn’t hurt as much because I think, deep down inside, I knew he had feelings for Kori. I was just deluding myself in thinking that I have a choice when I obviously didn’t.” You shrug your shoulders: the first few days had been rough for you. There was a lot of self-loathing and blaming but after a while, you had slowly come to your senses. Although deciding to avoid all of them had purely been a selfish thing.

Jason nods his head. “Do you want to have lunch with me?” He pushes himself off the bookshelf and turn to look at you. You obviously hadn’t been expecting that question from him because your elbow slipped and hit one of the shelves as you startled. He clears his throat, feeling a blush starting to rise and he curse the day he had decide to ask you without the cover of his mask. At the very least, you wouldn’t see him if he blushes – and Jason hopes he doesn’t.

It takes your brain a while to process what Jason had just said and you cannot help the blush that appears on your cheeks. Blinking a couple of times, you wet your lips before slowly nodding your head. Jason’s eyes widen the slightest bit before he schools his expression and gives you a stern look.

“You do understand that I am asking you out on a date right and not just lunch between two friends?”

The blush on your cheeks deepen the slightest bit and you nod your head, curling your hair behind your ear. “Yeah, I know.” You tell him weakly – your heart is starting to race, and you honestly don’t understand yourself right at this moment. You have always thought Jason to be really handsome and a really good friend too, considering how close in age the two of you are. “But I don’t want you to think I am doing this because I am settling, or you are my rebound…”

Jason shakes his head. “I have waited this long. I can wait a couple more to have you fall in love with me.” He smirks, draping his arm on your shoulders and you squeak the slightest bit when he pulls you to him. “Making you fall for me would not be that hard,” Jason tells you smugly, causing you to chuckle and roll your eyes. “Is Pho alright for you?”

You nod your head. Pho was not something you would normally eat but since you are already doing things you never thought you would be doing, might as well continue the streak. “I just so happen to be starving. You have impeccable timing, Todd.”

Jason snorts, rolling his eyes at your light jab and pulls you out of the bookstore. What he hadn’t count on was seeing Dick and Kori right as the two of you step outside. He feels you tensing up and Jason almost cursed out loud when Kori sees the two of you and that meant Dick’s attention was on the two of you as well.

Dick calls out your name in surprise and he is even more surprised to see Jason acting so affectionately with you. “I haven’t seen you around in a while! What are you doing here with Jason?” He pulls Kori towards the two of you and before you could even open your mouth to answer, Jason drops his arm from your shoulder to your waist – something that doesn’t miss Dick’s attention.

“We’re going out for lunch.” Jason tells him tersely. He really wished the two of you had stayed inside longer now, until Dick and Kori had gone. Dick shares a look with Kori before he turns back to Jason and you.

“Kori and I are about to go for lunch too. Maybe we can join?” Dick offers and before Jason could even open his mouth to reply, you spoke up, surprising everyone.

“Jason and I are going on a date.” You piped in, relaxing your body against Jason. You can feel all of their eyes on you and this causes you to blush slightly. But you clear your throat to continue talking. “Maybe some other day, sorry.” You tell them hurriedly and Jason nods his head.

“Oh.” Dick frowns but nods his head. “Yeah, maybe next time, right?” He turns to look at Kori who slowly nods his head. “It was nice seeing you, Y/N.” You give him a curt smile, nodding your head.

Honestly, my writing skills have probably deteriorated from the lack of writing lately but special shoutout to @half-superhero! Happiest of birthdays and I hope this was to your liking! I tried keeping it close to your request but everyone knows that I tend to stray far from what’s requested so I really do hope you enjoy this!

You wake up to the sound of barely hushed whispers of Roy… and your brothers? Your eyes widen in surprise when you realize, yes, those are your brothers whispering about with Roy! Groaning at how your sleep has been disturbed, you simply push the covers away from your body – thankful that you had the thought to put on some clothes before heading to bed last night – and stumble off the bed, heading to the living room.

“You guys are too noisy. Can’t a girl at least get some peace and quiet on her birthday?” You grumble as you lean against the doorframe, looking at Roy and Dick and Damian. Roy looks like a deer caught in headlight and Dick is looking at you sheepishly while Damian simply stares at you, crossing his arms at your words. “If this is about surprising me, you know I don’t really want any surprise, right? Just a nice lunch or dinner with all of my brothers present would be nice.” You stare at Dick who clears his throat and nods his head.

Roy gets up from the couch and heads over to you, wrapping his arms around you. You lean against his chest, pushing your nose to his neck, breathing in his scent. Roy and you have been dating for a while now and honestly, pursuing him and convincing him that he was good for you and you for him had been one of the best decisions you have ever made to date.

He presses a kiss to your temple and a smile appears on your face as you look at him. “Happy birthday, Y/N.” Roy stares at you with so much love that your cheeks start to blush and the smile on your face widens. “I’ll give you your present later okay?” He whispers, placing a kiss on your lips and you wound your arms around his neck, pulling him closer, deeper.

“Tt.” Damian rolls his eyes. “I think this is our cue to leave the apartment, Grayson.” He points out, looking at Dick. Dick chuckles, nodding his head, glancing at Roy and you.

You pull back from the lack of air and stare at your brothers. “I’ll see the two of you later for lunch?” Glancing at the clock, you still have about four hours before lunch, giving you ample time to just laze around.

Dick nods his head. “Alfred’s making all of your favorites so don’t be late. And I’m saying this to you, Roy. Make sure Y/N gets to the manor on time.” You pull away from Roy and head over to where Dick is to give your big brother a big hug, pulling an unwilling Damian into the hug as well.

“Happy birthday, Sister. I wish today be as what you expect it to be.” Damian tells you once you release him from the hug and you had to resist the urge to hug him once again because knowing Damian, he might avoid you for the rest of the day and you definitely did not want that! He has yet gotten used to your displays of affections.

After exchanging a few more words with Dick and Damian, the two of them left your apartment and you turn to Roy who is still staring at you. You furrow your eyebrows. “What?”

Roy chuckles under his breath and shakes his head. “Nothing.” He pulls you over to him and wrap his arms around you. “Do you want breakfast in bed or should we go out for pancakes?”

Your eyes light up at his suggestion. “Oh, can we go have pancakes? Please, Roy?”

Roy chuckles, nodding his head. “Somehow I knew you were going to say you want pancakes so get your butt in the toilet and shower. I made reservations!” Squealing at his words, you give Roy a quick kiss and rush to the toilet.

Your breakfast date with Roy had been an amazing one! Roy managed to surprise you with your favorite flowers, chocolates and even got you a pair of tickets to this concert you have been wanting to watch – it also happened to be the same concert you couldn’t manage to get a ticket to! – and you honestly thought nothing could make you happier. That was until you reached The Manor.

The living room was nicely decorated – there were photos from when you were a tiny baby to your toddler years to your early teens, so on and so forth, hanging on the walls from the living room all the way to the dining room. You knew Alfred liked taking photos of everyone (for memories’ sake) but it was really a surprise to see just how much love you received from everyone you are surrounded with. There were even photos of Roy and you and as soon as you got to the dining room, a chorus of “SURPRISE!” greeted you.

The tears that you had been struggling to hold back finally fell when you realize that not only is Jason present and not about to throw a threat or two, Barbara, Cass and Duke are all present as well. Stephanie is beside Tim and Bruce has a small smile on his face. Roy nudges you slightly when he realized that you had stopped walking.

“Come on, Y/N.” He pulls you in the dining room. You hastily wipe away the tears, not wanting to cry anymore on your birthday! The first one to greet you had been your dad, Bruce.

He smiles at you so warmly and suddenly, you feel as if you were still that small girl, trailing after Bruce and Dick. He gives you a hug, one that you melted right into and hugged him just as tight. “Happy birthday, Y/N. Your present is being delivered to your apartment right as we speak.” He mentions, and you grin at him, wondering what your dad had gotten you.

“Quite hogging her, Old man!” Jason grumbles as he steps up right behind Bruce. Bruce merely chuckles and releases you from his hug, stepping away to give Jason some time with you. He ruffles your hair and you laugh, not even caring at how Jason is easily messing up your hair. “Is Harper treating you alright?” Jason glances at your boyfriend and you grin, nodding your head.

“Roy treats me with respect and love, Jay. I am so lucky to be with him.” You tell him earnestly and Jason nods his head. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a really nicely made bracelet. “I made this for you.” He places the bracelet on your hand. “Try not to break it, okay?” He teases you, knowing how often you lose your jewelries or break them in frustration.

Before you could even form a reply, Alfred walks into the dining room with a two-tiered cake and this also almost made you cry once more. The cake was beautifully decorated, and you can see from how messy it was, your family definitely had a hand in decorating it too. When Alfred brought the cake closer to you, you almost choked on your breath because of the wordings on the cake.

With teary eyes, you turned to look at Roy only to find him holding up the ring that was missing from the velvet box perched on top of the cake. Roy looks at you. “Y/N, I’m really bad with words and I had a speech prepared and all, but I just can’t remember any of it right now so I’m just going to go at this.” He swallows nervously. “Will you marry me?”

Summary: You and Zed share a talk and a lesson

When you stepped into the millhouse, it was exactly the same as the last time you saw it, right down to that strange mirror over the fireplace. You knew John was out working on his latest gig, but you expected to run into at least someoneout and about in the place. Still, you weren’t upset at the chance to poke around.

It was a little concerning how many decanters were in the old liquor cabinet. The copious amounts of cigarette butts in the ashtray, however, weren’t too uncommon for the chain-smoking exorcist.

“Hello?” That was Chas’s voice coming from down the hall, growing closer as he threatened, “I know you’re here, so you’d best show yourself before I get nasty.

“I thought getting nasty was usually John’s gig,” you teased as he finally stepped into view.

Blankly, he stared at you for a moment before saying your name in an utterly confused tone.

“That’s still me, boyo,” you confirmed, allowing him to scoop you into a tight hug.

“What’re you doinghere?” he asked with a laugh while he stepped back from you. “You here for John?”

“In a manner of speaking,” you replied hesitantly, not wanting to get his hopes up about your sudden reappearance. “Signs keep pointing me back to you lot, so I figured I’d let you know I’m around since I doubt John’s mentioned it.”

“He’ll be happy you’re back,” he stated, practically confirming that John was being pretty tight-lipped about your involvement in this whole Rising Darkness affair.

“Chas …”

He muttered your name quietly before asking softly ,“Why did you leave him? One day, you two are crazy about each other, and the next you’re getting a divorce? I mean the guy clearly misses you. What could possibly–”

“You’re her,” a new voice interrupted him from the other side of the room. The new arrival, the seer Zed if you had to wager, scurried closer to get a better look at you. “You’re the woman I keep seeing.”

“So I’ve heard,” your voice was cold, a little unnecessarily so, but it was hard not to be frigid when you were actively glaring at Chas to keep the past to himself.

Zed’s eyes kept trailing up and down your body like she was looking for something specific. “Who the hell are you, anyway? Why do I keep seeing youof all people?”

You couldn’t help it, your icy façade broke apart as a laugh bubbled up from your chest at the bluntness of her questions.

“Ah, I was wondering where you’d gotten off to, luv,” John said, gesturing extravagantly as he breezed into the room. “Zed, I’d like you to meet my ex, the absolute nightmare that she is.” Even though his mouth and expression implied distaste for you, you could see the way his gaze lingered on the chain around your neck, on your lips for just a fraction of a second longer than was socially appropriate. “This cruel little lady is here to help you with your abilities, Zed.”

Looking at him, you raised an eyebrow as if to ask, “Oh am I?” but you didn’t argue.

Zed’s dark eyes lit up a little. “You’re like me?” she guessed.

“Not exactly.” When she deflated a little, you continued, “I’ve got a different set of skills, but I understand how yours works. I should be able to give you a few pointers.”

“Then we’ll leave you to it.” John’s hand came down hard on Chas’s shoulder. “Let’s go see about that taxi of yours, shall we?”

It was only the once they were gone that Zed stated, “I keep seeing you and John together in my visions.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“But I can never tell if it’s the past or the future.”

“Knowing the difference is a skill you’ll have to develop. Once you reallystart paying attention, you’ll find that they feel different; something about them just resonates on a different level. As for me and Constantine, what you’re seeing is in the past,” you lied, casually mixing truth with fiction. As far as Zed–and the rest of the planet, honestly–was concerned, there was nothing between you and your ex-husband anymore.

Her eyes narrowed a little. “I’m sorry, being around John has totally killed my manners. We still haven’t been introduced properly. I’m Zed,” she stated, offering you her hand to shake.

Instead of humoring her, you crossed your arms as you offered your own name. “And you seem like a smart enough woman to realize how incredibly rude it is to try and read someone without their permission.”

She shrugged, only deigning to look mildly apologetic. “Can’t blame a girl for trying. Everyone’s been suspiciously cagey with information about you.”

You stared at her for a moment, assessing the situation as a whole. There was every possibility your next move would backfire directly in your face, but the temptation was simply too much to resist. “Alright,” you announced, offering your hand.

Now it was Zed’s turn to look distrustful. “You justsaid–”

“And now I’m giving you permission,” you pointed out, “if you think you can handle it.”

She laughed. “Well, I’ve never been one to run away from a challenge,” was all she said before grasping your hand.

Immediately, she gasped at the onslaught of information, and thanks to your own gifts you could see exactly what was swarming her mind and even control it to a degree.

The most overwhelming thing in the vision was the impossibly hot, scarlet red fire that tore through her mind. Hellfire, the very thing that thrived in your veins at every moment, the thing it’d taken you years to learn how to control once you first awakened that power. It was only throughthat punishing fire that a few hazy memories leaked through your control for Zed to see.

The day John proposed, a few times you’d seen his old band perform, things like that. The instant that Zed was able to make out the bare, sweat-covered skin of John’s chest, she reflexively jerked away from you.

This time, you raised your eyebrows in challenge. “See what you wanted?”

“What was that?” she gasped as she fought her spasming lungs to gulp air down.

“I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume you’re not asking about the mechanics of sex. Let’s just say that’s the reason you don’t go through people’s heads if you don’t know anything about them. Consider that your first lesson. You never know if your target is someone like me that can control what you see. They can make you see nonsense, or they might be able to trick you into seeing something that never happened.”

“Thefire?”

You smirked. “Maybe someday you’ll figure it out. But you managed to squeeze out a few memories from me at least, which is more than I expected. John’s handiwork?”

Her face darkened in a blush, no doubt recalling the last memory she saw of what you thought might have been the last night you and John were together. “He’s been the one helping me until now.:”

“Not terrible for a beginner,” you admitted. “Go get some rest, Zed; you look exhausted.”

She nodded. “Good idea. You gonna be sticking around?”

“Depends on if John and I are going to kill each other or not,” you lied again while on the inside, you knew that the pair of you were unlikely to part again anytime soon. For better or worse, your fates were tied together once more; you could feel that much in your very soul.

And based on the way the millhouse rearranged itself so that the door that should have led to the old library actually opened up into John’s messy bedroom, it knew that as well as you did.

Summary: Some more mirror hinting, and John runs into his old flame

It was when Gaz and Zed were left alone that Zed saw the woman that’d been haunting her visions for the first time outsideof one of those visions. Both her and Gary were in bad shape from their bizarre, shared withdrawal symptoms, so Zed found herself lounging on the couch in front of the fireplace. John wasn’t around to explain this particular weirdness when she first noticed that the mirror was showing something that wasn’t the room it resided in. If anything, it looked like it was displaying images from some other point in time.

She watched the scene curiously, head tilted in mute confusion as she watched the pair interact like they were on a mute TV instead of a mirror.

They looked happy, John and however the woman was. They were smiling and dancing in a lazy circle while holding each other close. In the firelight, a pair of rings shined on the woman’s left ring finger, one silver and one copper. Zed’s eyebrows furrowed. On the next pass, she clocked a matching silver ring on John’s finger.

“What?” she found herself whispering to no one.

“Not sure what happened to her,” Gary’s voice pulled her attention from the mirror.

“You know who she is?”

“Yeah, she was Johnny’s girl. They were together for ages, but then she up and left him all of the sudden.”

“Can’t really blame her if he was always this much of a flake,” Zed muttered.

Gary chuckled at that. “You don’t understand. For years they were practically inseparable. Then something changed.”

“And you don’t know what happened?”

“John won’t talk about it,” the heroin addict explained. “Just showed up one day without her and all but ordered us not to ask about her. Then Newcastle happened, and well …” He trailed off for a moment. “Well, I don’t blame her for staying away after that mess.”

~

When John stepped out of the shaman’s shop, a familiar voice called his attention to the wall next to the door he just exited. “So I hear you need a fancy knife,” you taunted the second his eyes landed on you.

Gods, she’s as stunning as ever, John found himself thinking immediately. “And a human host to boot. You know, the usual level of nonsense with demons.”

“Well, I can help you with one–”

John was cutting you off by pressing his lips to yours before he really knew what he was doing because his feet carried him across the distance between you in two strides and his hands were already twining themselves in your hair to make the kiss harder, more passionate.

And you didn’t fight him in the slightest. No, you were just glad he made the first move, because you knew that if he hadn’t, your usually-iron will would have given out only moments later. Your fingers knotted their way into his blond hair to try to pull him impossibly closer until the need for air made the two of you part. Even then, you didn’t move far away. Instead, you rested your forehead rested against his as your free hand moved to touch your now-swolen lips.

“Shite, I shouldn’t have done that,” he muttered, though he made no move to step away.

“Can’t say I’m complaining,” was your response as you pet his hair fondly. “Not like anyone’s around to call us on it.”

“I think Zed already has,” was hisresponse as he looked at the chain that had started worming its way out of your shirt.

“She your seer friend?”

“Clairsentient, and ‘friend’ is an awfully strong word in this line of work, luv.”

“That’s a yes, then. What’s going on with this hunger demon, then? Aside from what you just found out. Why here, why now? This isn’t their usual stomping ground.”

He sighed, pressed a kiss to your forehead, and stepped back a single step. “Gaz.”

“Like … Gaz, Gaz?” You were surprised, for sure. Last you heard of Gary Lester, he’d been lost in a drug haze somewhere overseas.

“It’s a long story. Remind me to fill you in on the Rising Darkness later.”

He sounded as tired as he looked. John Constantine looking rumpled and exhausted wasn’t anything new; he had sleeping issues long before you met him all those years ago.  But this was something else. Something awfulhad happened after the split, and it left quite a mark on the man you loved. If you were the betting type, you’d wager it had to do with whatever happened up in Newcastle that had made the magical community aflutter a while back.

“Do you need help on this one?” you offered. Idly, your hand reached out to straighten his tie. It was a futile gesture, but it was an action that gave you somewhere to look that wasn’t his bloodshot, brown eyes.

“Point me towards that knife, and I can handle the rest.”

You didn’t like his tone. There was something about it that resonated as just this side of unhinged. “What are you going to do?”

John inhaled sharply, clearly having an internal debate over whether or not he should tell you. “If you have anything to say to Gaz, do it now. He’s at the millhouse, provided he hasn’t given Zed the slip yet.”

You eyes slid closed as you nodded along with the realization of what his plan was. “Is it the only way?”

Now, he shrugged. “He wants retribution, he causedthis outbreak, and I need a host–preferably a willing one–in order to trap this demon. Unless you’re wanting to do it yourself, this is really our only option.”

“I’m not exactly the most human of hosts, John.”

“Exactly. Seventy-five percent isn’t exactly good enough, as it were.”

You frowned, not liking the jab at your genetics, but still you found yourself nodding again because he wasn’t wrong. “The knife you need’s at the museum.” The deep breath you took was really the only thing keeping your nerves from being completely out of control. “When the time comes, tell him I say ‘goodbye,’” was all you requested.

“Alright,” he agreed calmly. “I’ll pass it along.”

“Right. Thanks.” You swallowed thickly. “You know you’ve got a celestial stalker, right?” Desperately, you hoped he wouldn’t comment on the way your voice broke while trying to change the subject.

He snorted, pulling out a cigarette. “Unfortunately, yes.”

“Then we better part ways; they get snippier than usual when I’m around in my experience.”

“Will you, uh, be staying close, then?”

“Close enough to be there if you absolutely need me, but, John, you know we can’t–”

“I know, but believe you me, one of these days I’m going to stop caring about the fact that we shouldn’t.”

The scary part was that you suspected that that day would come sooner rather than later, and you were already looking forward to it.

Summary: Meeting Zed dredges up even more memories

Of all the things John expected to see when he broke into that tricky little con artist’s apartment, the large, charcoal drawing of him and his ex-wife standing forehead to forehead certainly wasn’t one of them. Either this artist was one hellof a stalker that really wanted to scare him by drawing this, or she was the real deal–a seer of some flavor or another. And if she was a seer …

John squinted at the drawing. Falling out of her shirt in the image was a startlingly familiar pair of rings dangling from a delicate chain: a nice, plain wedding band, and the shitty copper engagement ring he’d won in a gacha vending machine about two minutes before proposing.

“… Bollocks,” he breathed. This drawing wasn’t something from the past like he’d been hoping. In their time together, she’d always worn that stupid thing (for a moment, John could perfectly picture the way her face had absolutely lit up when he’d gone to one knee with that ring still in the plastic orb it came in); there was no way the artist could have known to put it on a chain instead of on her finger if it was based on stalking.

Reluctantly, and with his eyes still tracing the planes of your face drawn in smudgy black, he pulled out his phone and dialed your number.

When you answered on the first ring with a questioning, “John?” he couldn’t help but chuckle, even if his heart was racing at the sound of your voice turning his name into something that seemed more precious than it had any right to be.

The repeated call of his name shook him out of his stupor. He coughed awkwardly to try and cover it up. “Yeah, luv, it’s me.”

“Are you alright?” Of course thatwas your first reaction to the fact that he was calling. It was sweet even if he chose not to question the reason for your concern. He didn’t need to think very hard to know that you either thought you were in danger that he needed help with or that he was calling you while hopelessly drunk. Again.

“‘M fine. I’ve stumbled across a seer.”

“John …”

“I know,” he waved off her concerned questioning. ”What I don’t know is how you’re involved.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

“Tell me, do you wear your rings on a chain around your neck?” Your silence told him plenty. It was hard to ignore the way his heart fluttered at the confirmation. “I miss you too, luv.”

“Don’t, John,” you snapped, voice colder than necessary as you, he assumed, also tried to ignore any lingering feelings that were being dredged up by this phone call.

“Right.” He cleared his throat. “I don’t know how you’re involved, but she’s drawn the two of us together.”

“Could be us in the past,” you suggested. “Maybe she sees memories of people she’s about to meet?”

“Not with that bit about your ring.” John’s fingers moved to pinch the bridge of his nose. “Listen, I’ll try not to bring you into whatever’s going on, but I wanted to give you a warning.”

He could hear you sigh before you spoke up, “Where are you hiding these days? I can make sure I’m nearby in case you need me.”

“That’s not–”

“It is necessary, and youknow it as well as I. Seers never mean anything good. If I start making my way there now, it’ll be less hassle later.”

You were right, especially since, “The mirror showed the two of us a few days ago.”

Silence fell for a moment. “So you’re at the millhouse. I’ll head that way, be in the area and all that.”

“… Thanks, luv.”

“Goodbye, John.”

By the time he pulled the phone away from his ear, John’s heart was racing. That reaction was the exact reason that he made a point to avoid any of your old haunts, because–divorce aside–you still had quite the effect on him.

“Back to work,” he found himself saying in an attempt to convince himself to do just that. So he nosed around Zed’s apartment, for real this time, trying to find any real information about who the woman was.

Before he knew it, he was arguing with Zed about how convenienther vague, no-roots-anywhere lifestyle was. Then he had to worry about scaring her off; he couldn’t take making another friend just to lose them again.

~

When he got back to the millhouse, John was about thirty percent convinced that he was going to see your car parked in the driveway, and the moment he saw that it was empty, a strange combination of relief and sadness washed over him. He wasn’t sure if he could handle being around you after everything in the mining town, but simultaneously his entire being ached for you.

Despite his better judgement, he settled on the couch across from the fireplace with a nice glass of whatever whiskey he found in the cabinet. Looking up at that damned mirror, he was greeted once again with the sight of you. In the reflection, you would have been sitting right next to where he was now. Sitting like this with the memory of you wasn’t an indulgence he’d ever allowed himself. Even at his worst, John hadn’t been dumb enough to think it wise to do such a thing given his proclivities for indulging in things that made him even more self-destructive than he usually was.

Still he found him doing exactly that.

In the mirror, you were looking directly at him like you knew he’d eventually be doing exactly this. Maybe you did; you’d always displayed a tendency to be eerily precognitive.
