#don’t say gay bill

LIVE

Stand up against “Don’t Say Gay” laws that several states within the USA are trying to push through- they’re insidious.

It’s way beyond LGBTQ erasure. It’s more than than isolating LGBTQ students, teachers, and other members of society and putting them at risk of discrimination, violence, suicide, and disenfranchisement to the fringes of society. “Don’t Say Gay” laws are designed not to protect children from “inappropriate material”, they’re actually a direct effort to prevent the educational process necessary to change society to end discrimination and violence, particularly Transgender discrimination. Only education at a young age can achieve this goal.

Something I said last year in a post about the racial hate that’s been flaring up here, discusses the process:

“Racism, just like homophobia, is going to take decades and decades to be reduced by education and creating new standards. We can’t flip a switch and make everyone’s deeply rooted beliefs change. It’s learned, passed down generation to the next, from family and community.(https://mysterioususerx.tumblr.com/post/646005364447428608/two-weeks-ago-i-answered-an-ask-about-why)

Eliminating LGBTQ history and other educational programs and content stops this process dead in its tracks at a key critical moment in our history. It’s an effort to stop Transgender rights from happening.

STAND UP AGAINST “DON’T SAY GAY”! Our future and survival are depending upon it! And this goes way beyond the United States: as one of the most influential countries on the planet, we’re setting global precident too.

Oh oh ohhh this is so not cool. I can’t believe they’re going there. A jaw droppingly LGBTQ hate and racist kind of not cool.

Florida governor DeSantis is directly targeting Disney World for being conspicuously LGBTQ equality supportive, and throwing the weight of his office to take them down for it… and more than that, if you read his written statement to his supporters, it’s racist too.

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN FLORIDA… read it here:

The “Don’t Say Gay” laws that DeSantis is fighting dirty for are laws aimed at making it illegal to even mention the existence of LGBTQ people in schools, including giving guidance, protection from bullying, and emotional support to LGBTQ children, and erasing all LGBTQ history from being taught or discussed in schools. Beyond safe sex and inclusiveness- Pride and Stonewall civil rights history? It would be illegal to discuss. The very local Pulse massacre? Illegal history too. “Help- I’m gay and my dad is beating me…” pleas from children to teachers or guidance counselors? Illegal too.

IT’S REPOST TIME, NETIZENS!

When it comes to schools teaching their children things they don’t like, Republicans go on about how the government should have no say in the way they raise their children.

When you’re a parent supporting your trans child, Republicans want the government to take your child off of you and charge you with child abuse

@malewifepants Honestly, if you think this is what my blog is about that says way more about you than it does me.

I’ve ran this blog for 5 years now, 2 of which my focus has been on The Owl House and my thought process has never once taken me to thinking about Luz and Amity having sex. You know why? Because as you have already stated yourself, they are minors and I am a fully grown adult. And I invite you to look through my blog, but you won’t find a single bit of incriminating content.

It is interesting how you came across my blog, I’m presuming last night and took what I’m assuming was a brief look through it and yet, your thought process took you to two minors having sex all on it’s own with no prompting from my blog whatsoever. Because as I said, my blog NEVER touches that subject nor does it EVER cross my mind.

So maybe the person who’s child(ren) should be taken away from them is the individual throwing stones from a glass house.

@malewifepants Well, now you have pulled the mask off a bit further I have now blocked you. But for the benefit of anyone else with your mindset who might come across here.

1. If you think teaching kids about sexual orientation and gender identity equates to the sexualisation of children I have nothing further to say to you.

I live in the UK and realised I was trans when I was 10. By that, I mean I knew I should be a girl. At the time I realised this, the UK had a similar law to the Don’t Say Gay Bill known as Section 28. When I tried to approach my teacher about how I was feeling she shut me down at every turn because legally she was not allowed to discuss it with me. It left me feeling like being trans was wrong and something I should be ashamed of. The law was repealed a year later but by that point the damage had already been done.

So you are damn right that I am against bills that reflect anything like what was in Section 28. Being LGBT does not equate to sex.

2. You know very little about my online presence but I do not dedicate my whole online presence to The Owl House. I’m @Jenny_Richman1 on Twitter and while yes my bio does mention my blog in passing, I rarely talk about The Owl House on there. And contrary to what you may believe, I spend most of my life off line and have varying interests.

3. Finally, I do have an interest in shows such as The Owl House, largely because they have representation in that I never got to see as a kid. And frankly, Disney is fairly rubbish on LGBT+ representation, The Owl House being an exception to that rule. But I am happy seeing that young LGBT+ people growing up now will get to see themselves represented in the media they consume. And frankly, I do take an interest in that representation being present as it is a positive step in the right direction.

None of the above equates the sexualisation of children though and if you think it does, once again that says more about you than it does about me. And I’m not going to take moral lectures from someone baselessly going around calling people “groomers”. It is a serious accusation to be making with frankly no basis to do so.

People in the U.S.A. constantly having to fight for the right to acknowledge diversity and bigotry in various settings, particularly school settings, is wild on many levels, and some of the arguments from conservatives are absolutely ridiculous.

I was just reminded of the fact that in Year 6, my class and I read a book about a refugee girl actively fleeing her home country with her family, hiding from people who could kill her, travelling by boat to Australia and being detained for months, hearing about other refugee’s suicides and contemplating how that felt from a kid’s perspective, and trying and waiting to be allowed to live freely. It’s a beautiful book. We, a group of roughly 11-12 year olds, were prescribed to read and discuss.

Granted, I am Australian, and that Primary School that I went to is in Sydney. I know that there have been attempts, sometimes successful, at censoring what kids are taught about here in Australia too, and many other places around the world besides the U.S.A. , for example this year (2022) there have already been multiple attempts by a single school in Queensland to force students, staff, and parents and guardians of students to sign a contract that says that that school can expel or fire anybody for displaying gender-nonconformity, “homosexual acts”, or for being transgender. By no means am I trying to imply that bigoted policies, legislature, or practices are only located in 1 place.

What I am saying, is that as somebody who was in a Primary School where we actively discussed topics that some people may shy away from discussing with young people, I can say that I genuinely think that reading that book and discussing it and the real-world things that real people have to live through, made for a much more empathetic, compassionate, emotionally-intelligent, and educated group of kids, who definitely would benefit from that experience.

Providing an educational, open-minded, and compassionate space for young people to explore new and potentially uncomfortable or controversial things is extremely important and beneficial. Part of school-based education is emotional, and teaching about compassion, empathy, and respect for yourself and other people, and other points of view and experiences, is a part of that.

I love this podcast in general, but this episode in particular was excellent. Acclaimed historians Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman bring the receipts on the truth about queer American history and spoiler - it’s very different from what the GOP likes to claim.
